Shure SM-57s are nice for guitar amps and I like to use one for mic-ing my 4x10 while I DI my 1x18 (anything below 140hz)

The 58-Betas and the Sennheiser 832e (I think that's the model #) are the best mics I ever found for my vocals.

I need to sell my mics and get some.

Spaceman Spiff 05-07-2010 10:14 AM

There's another mic that he uses for the bass amp, but I can't recall what it is.

Convectuoso 05-07-2010 03:02 PM

What do you use for drums then?

I'm cheap and use a 5-piece Nady mic set that I bought years ago on clearance for $149. It works, although covering all the toms is not easy at all and I generally have to snag another vocal mic to get the floor tom.

I'd love to get one of those bullet mics that harmonica players use. They have such a sweet sound for vocals that reminds me of Portishead.

OMGasm. Good reviews & decently priced. I wonder how well it mounts onto a mic stand...

Convectuoso 05-07-2010 03:27 PM

Nady make some good mics but usually I'd use way more than 5.

On a session I did on Tuesday I had planned 18 mics, then cut it back to 15 after realizing we only had 16 preamps lol.

I used three in the kick drum, one out side the kick, 57 on snare top and bottom with a shot gun mic on the shell. An AKG C414 front of kit. Sennheiser MD421's on the toms and floor tom (top&bottom). Earthworks QTC50's as overheads. Those puppies are completely flat from 3hz to 50khz. It's ridiculous. Then I used a room mic placed in the top corner of the room facing a wall. I think that's 15 lol.

I was doing some lazy man mixing whilst tracking and smashed the **** of the front of kit, brought in one of the inside kicks and the overheads and it was like instant Steve Albini drums.

Ahhh I love having free access to thousands of dollars worth of gear XD

Yeah, it's pretty sweet. I'll be in an actual recording studio over this weekend, and I'll let you know how the setup goes. I'm thinking about doing this with my rig:

Preamp Dirty - HPF (140hz) - Compressor Channel 1 - Cab - Mic
Preamp Clean - LPF (140hz) - Compressor Channel 2 - DI.

How do you usually record basses?

Convectuoso 05-07-2010 04:21 PM

I'd give him a clean DI signal with no compression as well. Just use a DI box that has an XLR out and a link feature.

Honestly, I usually just go straight into the desk/preamp/whatever. But that depends on the bass and the amp that is available.

For example I'm borrowing one of my tutors USA Fender Jazz's and that thing sounds ****ing awesome just straight in and nothing done to it. Same with the dude I'm recording this year, he brings in a Warwick Dolphin and that thing punches through straight away.

If I was doing like posthardcore/metal/etc which needs a dirty tone I'd try get my hands on a tube amp of some kind.

FunkMetalBass 05-07-2010 04:29 PM

I'm currently recording for a 3-piece blues/rock type of thing.
http://www.myspace.com/vincentalexanderchavez (these are only acoustic demos)

The guy will be playing a Fender Strat through a Marshall combo, overdriven (reminds me of Pearl Jam). I think beefing up the bass with a hair of overdrive will really help fill in the gap from lack of a second guitarist.

I might just send the guy a wet and dry signal and let him do what he feels is best. I don't want to over-complicate, but I want to be ready so that I'm not wasting his time. I'd hate to come in as a hired gun and spend an hour getting the right tone. I'm already worried enough that I'll be doing quite a few takes.

It's true.

Epidemechanical 05-07-2010 11:12 PM

youtube comments are so much fun

i just commented how BAD trent reznors new project with his "wife" is and dude people poured out their SOUL about it

lmao

"YOU SHOULD BE HAPPY TRENT HAS HEALED AS A PERSON"

hahahahahahahahahahahahahaa

Convectuoso 05-08-2010 01:36 AM

Lol I have seen some of the most disgusting uses of the English language on youtube, highly entertaining.

Convectuoso 05-08-2010 01:38 AM

Does any other country get the soft drink brand Frank? I think it's Australian.

But they do this "Sparkly Zesty Lemonade" and it is the best thing since Mountain Dew. You have to taste it to believe it.

Convectuoso 05-08-2010 01:40 AM

Lmao are you Epidemechanical (http://www.youtube.com/user/Epidemechanical)?

Spaceman Spiff 05-08-2010 09:56 AM

I just ordered my Primus ticket. :D

July 27th can't come soon enough.

yes

Epidemechanical 05-08-2010 10:46 AM

the song is really bad though like

its already bad enough that reznor makes HORRIBLE music nowadays (with teeth, year zero, the slip, all GARBAGE)

but now he's married (lol wtf?) and his wife's vocals are horrible

Spaceman Spiff 05-08-2010 10:54 AM

I haven't heard this new song yet, but I do agree that all those NIN albums were garbage.

Epidemechanical 05-08-2010 10:58 AM

when you insult trent reznor its like making fun of people when they say "my dad has cancer..."

HOW DARE YOU

Spaceman Spiff 05-08-2010 11:06 AM

I've been listening to NIN since I was 11 years old, so don't tell me that I'm fat!

I'm excited for July 27th ... different reason though.

SCII baby.

Spaceman Spiff 05-08-2010 11:17 AM

Starcraft?

I never got into it. I played it a few times, but it's not my kind of game.

:amaze: 05-08-2010 11:22 AM

yeah i'm not really a gamer (i rule at tetris and guitar hero, but i'm terrible at pretty much any other games), but i used to play starcraft back in middle/high school. First time i've ever pre-ordered a videogame. Probably will be the last, too.

:amaze: 05-08-2010 11:24 AM

also just got my graduation present from myself in the mail yesterday. Got myself an electric guitar, woo.

Plays and sounds surprisingly good for a guitar I got shipped new for 200 with a case.

Spaceman Spiff 05-08-2010 11:29 AM

Cool. Looks nice, too.

I've got to say though, I hate Guitar Hero. I've played it and it just seemed so lame. And not for my usual reason of "Why don't you just play a real guitar?" When it came down to actually playing it, I just didn't find it fun at all.

:amaze: 05-08-2010 11:34 AM

haha, fair enough. i've only got a couple musician friends that can get into it. I've been playing since GH2, and i've got one buddy (non-musician) who is just as good as me, so it makes it more fun when it's competitive.

Spaceman Spiff 05-08-2010 11:41 AM

For video games, I like shooters, fighting games, and those action/adventure style games, like Uncharted or Prince Of Persia (although the last one on PS3 was kind of whack). Some sports games, too.

Platformers are also dope. I love old side-scrollers. I'm a big Little Big Planet fan, too.

:amaze: 05-08-2010 11:54 AM

yeah i like arcade style fighting games. the only sports games i like are hockey, and then ridiculous ones (like nfl blitz and ****)

Spaceman Spiff 05-08-2010 12:04 PM
yeah i like arcade style fighting games. the only sports games i like are hockey, and then ridiculous ones (like nfl blitz and ****)
Yeah, for sure. I'm so pumped for the release of Marvel Vs. Capcom 3.

Sports games, as long as they're good, I can get into them. Baseball, hockey, basketball... not really football. I just hate that sport. NFL Blitz was a lot of fun, though.

I really don't like hockey either, but the video games are fun.
