I saw this didn't have a review yet, and so I took it upon myself.

Anyone amped for the new Immortal Technique? The new Outkast was better than I expected, too.

Little Man being Erased 08-24-2006 08:02 PM

So yeah, Illmatic and Paid in Full are two of the best hip-hop albums I've ever heard. The former in particular.

"It Ain't Hard to Tell" has to be close to the best hip-hop song of all time.

Endless Obsession 08-25-2006 12:01 PM

Who else is pissed that Nas changed the name of his new CD from "Nigga" to "Hip-Hop is Dead"? It would have been HIlarious had he named it simply nigga.

Glitterati 08-27-2006 03:20 PM

Speaking of Nas, I downloaded Illmatic like fifteen minutes ago and I'm pretty much picking up my jaw off the ground.

antiant 08-27-2006 03:21 PM

the whole "hip hop is dead" attitude is so lame, overused, unoriginal and too cliche now a days, sounds pretty whack to me

Leprechauns1021 08-27-2006 03:25 PM

Z-ro's "Every Day Same Thing" is becoming my favorite song.

Pretty much. But I'll still check it out when I can.

JonM 08-27-2006 03:52 PM

I would like to promote People Under The Stairs as an excellent example of West Coast MCmanship.

ATM 08-27-2006 08:34 PM

:-D

I love PUTS.

2muchket! 09-02-2006 03:28 PM

People rave about Illmatic but I haven't had a chance to hear it, is the hype justified ??

Oh and is there any fans of Grime on Mx ?

Kyle 09-02-2006 05:13 PM

I like some Grime. What artists in particular are we talkin'?

JonM 09-02-2006 05:24 PM

The Mitchell Brothers.

Not to change the subject from Grime, but The Roots are back on top with this new record, man. I waited to listen to it for so long because I had low expectations, but those were just shattered.

Flagjacket 09-02-2006 05:30 PM

I heard a song off Game Theory and it sounded like a bad PE rip off band.

Kyle 09-02-2006 05:34 PM

I was assuming the new Roots would be horrible, i'll check it out I guess.

Grime belongs to Dizzee Rascal.

BlackDeathMetalJazz or really ANYTHING else please- 09-02-2006 06:03 PM
People rave about Illmatic but I haven't had a chance to hear it, is the hype justified ??
In a matter of a few days of first listening to it, I've discovered that it's one of my favorite albums of all times. Definitely justified.

Rams 09-02-2006 06:30 PM

Black Thought is terrible on the new Roots album (worse than usual) but the band is on point. I wish they'd just drop the weak link.
Black Thought is terrible on the new Roots album (worse than usual) but the band is on point. I wish they'd just drop the weak link.
I'm with you, I don't like Blackthought at all. The only album of theird that I have is Things Fall Apart, and the parts I like best are when Mos Def and Common are guest starring.

Kyle 09-03-2006 12:55 PM

I love watching stuff from them performing live, but other than The Seed, (which is like the best song ever) they've never blown me away on record.

antiant 09-03-2006 01:56 PM

true @ the roots...there's no message imo, lyrics suck (if you even call them that), and the band doesn't really expand their horizons much, they stay within the same frame work...i mean this is a LIVE band, can't we get creative? instead of producing the same predictable stuff? and as kyle stated, they don't really blow me away either...and blackthought's mumbles aren't really inviting, i mean can't we expand our vocal chords too and do smoething a bit different? they're just mediocre to me

JonM 09-03-2006 06:55 PM

Wow, I really disagree. I mean, I felt like that about The Roots for the last three records, but I was very pleasantly surprised by this one. I think it's WAY out there compared to what they've been doing recently. I think the posthumous influence of J Dilla is what did it.

They have so much potential, i've just been begging for them to change my mind.
If you're serious about this forum thing you should prove it to Jermany Ferwerda by making the hip hop listening party a huge success and making him put it on the front page of the site!

http://www.sputnikmusic.com/HipHop
I didn't know there was a Hip Hop listening party, but yeah, lets do that.

Edit: I just found out that People Under The Stairs are playing near me in October, anyone know anything about their live act?

Dilla only did the beat on one of the tracks, the tribute to him. I don't see the vocals fitting the production at all; even on the excellent single I couldn't care less if Black Thought was singing or not. It sounds like Guru got hit in the head, started slurring his words, and was thrown in with the Wu-Tang Clan. He just sounds awkward throughout the whole CD. I like the beats, but they really need to get rid of the third wheel.

Does Black Moon have any other CD's as good as Enta Da Stage? That one is truly excellent.

antiant 09-04-2006 01:40 PM
They have so much potential, i've just been begging for them to change my mind.
keyword: potential...doesn't mean anything if it isn't actual, all talk no action...people waste their time on "potential" hoping for what could be when it never will be, so to speak...but yeah i think i'm going to upload that new album for you, so you can hear it and report back, i'm curious what you think...btw don't you hate those types, they have so much potential, but they just won't get rid of their "friends" "producers" or whatever is making them sound bad in your mind...and even though you know they could be greater, they just sit there and it doesn't blow you away or WOW you, it's like meh whatever, they're just "ok"

Kyle 09-04-2006 01:46 PM

Heh, thanks for offer dude, but i'm actually already downloading it. I'll let you know what I think though.

I don't really hate bands with potential, I just find them utterly frustrating.

i meant hate = dislike...same thing...and yes it is frustrating...i think i'll still offer it now, another person wanted it anyways, plus i already started ;)
I like some Grime. What artists in particular are we talkin'?
Mitchell Brothers, Sway, Plan B that sorta stuff.

I just find it amazing that the British public doesn't really care about UK artists much. Especially as the grime scene is thriving.

Kyle 09-04-2006 02:42 PM
Mitchell Brothers, Sway, Plan B that sorta stuff.
Yeah, well as I said earlier Dizzee Rascal is my favorite grime artist. He just seems to be a step ahead of most grime artists out there, with that said I like all 3 that you mentioned.

I've heard Sway is a really good live act and does a lot of improvisation, i'd like to see him one day.

I like everything i've heard from Plan B, and downloaded his album earlier, so i'll check it out in a bit. Whilst he's pretty good, i'm doubtful that he can maintain my interest for a whole album, just way to angry.

Badmoon 09-04-2006 09:59 PM

Bone Thugs & Harmony
Lil Wyte
Master P - Ghetto D -- surprisingly pretty good. Completey ripped off though; I'm surprised that P gets away with it.

Eliminator 09-04-2006 10:35 PM

I thought it was Bone Thugz n' Harmony?

So I've been thinking lately, and I don't really understand why some people seem to hold Sean Combs in high esteem. At least, it seems to be like that on television.

Most rap fans like the Notorious B.I.G. Puff Daddy helped make Biggie what he was. Then he did the formulaic approach to rap success (top of the line producers and hooks).
