Yes it can hurt if you dont do it correctly. Even if you do it correctly, consistently doing it will cause some wear and tear. Not really permanent damage but maybe a loss of range is certain areas such as your break or falsetto range, because the cords will always be somewhat swollen and irritated from screaming.
Thank you, good sir. That's what I suspected. I was reading of a few famous people who developed vocal nodules, and some of them didnt even "scream" perse. Such as Freddie Mercury.

Ok, Tobius would like some help if it's not too much trouble. Also this is highly embarrasing so please go easy on me.

I recently recorded myself singing and would like to know if i have a good singing voice.

Any constructive criticism is greatly appreciated.

Ok I've been working on a few things, heres a clip of me attempting to scream correctly the song Kelsey by Still Remains. Theres a pause at the beginning where you cant hear anything so dont turn it up way high or you'll blast yourself out of your seat haha :p

http://media.putfile.com/Kelsey

Tobius, I would say that you need more air support, and I believe thats what merkaba or any of the other buffs would say, because it kinda just sounds like you're talking. More air, more support. You'll get it eventually, and I sure hope I know what I'm talking about :)

Periodic Downfall 08-20-2007 10:27 PM

Okay...no one answered my question....but thats fine, I have growls down now.

Still waiting for tips on how to scream as high as Dani Filth....I can get pretty close, but it still isn't that high

Ksama, you sound very breathy. I'm not sure what to prescribe you falsetto screams, but Still Remains is using 'Vocal Fry' for their vocals in that song (As do many metalcore bands).
Vocal Fry is somewhat explained here.
http://www.musesmuse.com/art-vocalrelease1.html

Vocal Fry only works well if mixed with good head resonance (explained below). Pitch is governed by the position of your voice box and the shape of your mouth. (Zen of Screaming 2 has good instruction on vocal fry)

One thing you should try Tobius that will make a large difference is resonance. You'll notice resonance when you feel a buzz in the area above your mouth. I find the best way for me to capture it is to first:

Hum on a comfortable note, and then elongate your mouth cavity and make some more room.
Play around with the sound until you feel a buzzing/vibration around your nasal area.
Once you've obtained that feeling break the hum into a nicely form 'eee' vowel.
Combine the resonance with the breath support will make a big difference. For breath
Breath from your stomach more, and to get the push from the diaphragm practice on 'ssss' and going louder with the 'ssss' and you will feel the push from the correct spot.

demo for you guys:

Call Me Jack 08-25-2007 01:10 PM

So yeah, i've been learning to scream lately with a considerable amount of success. any way, i noticed when i try and scream my lowwest notes they really aren't all that low. I'm a tenor, i'm pretty sure, so i don't expect to be able to go super low, but i still feel really high.

I think this is because my mouth is naturally kinda small. could that be a good reason for why i can't get very low; i can't as big of a combo of lowering the vocal chords and increasing my mouth volume, as every one else?

part of being a tenor is a smaller larynx....usually

Oh God tell me about it.

Just drinking a lot of warm water is normally soothing enough to continue though, a lot of the time the major issue with a lot of screaming is phlegm, so much comes up and it just clogs up, that makes highs harder than any swelling.

TheAttempt 09-10-2007 02:56 PM

I'd like multiple opinions; what is the lowdown on inhale screaming? Is it bad for you? I've heard many mixed reviews on it and am looking for a solid answer.

i am the robots 09-11-2007 09:05 PM

I used to do a lot of inhale screaming, but I moved back to exhales and I kinda screwed up my throat, so I think I'm gonna go beck to inhales.

It really has to do with which way it's easier to keep your throat from being butchered for the individual.

Thanks, but what do you mean by that? If you could give me detailed examples that would be great. Because I've heard all these things about how it damages you much worse than any other styles. I can go pretty loud without any strain on my throat if I do say so myself, it feels more or less at the back roof of my mouth.

Also, why is there so much hate against inhale?

i am the robots 09-12-2007 10:29 PM

As long as you're not creating rasp from scraping your vocal cords together, you're good. A lot of people do inhales by closing their throats and sucking in as hard as they can, which basically shreds everything against everything else.

TheAttempt 09-13-2007 01:15 PM

If I could find a way to record clips and put them on here, would that be able to tell you anything?

i am the robots 09-13-2007 01:19 PM

In a lot of cases, yeah.

Eliminator 09-13-2007 02:17 PM

i am the robots 09-13-2007 06:19 PM

It's all about inhales. bree bree

Ksama 09-16-2007 09:33 PM

anyone know what bands use inhales? I find them very easy, yet exhaling screams are a complete mystery to me :|

i am the robots 09-17-2007 02:29 PM

see you next tuesday
daughters
kissy face fashion faux~pas

i am the robots 09-17-2007 07:15 PM

step four: profit!

Eliminator 09-17-2007 07:38 PM

That was sarcastic..right?

i am the robots 09-18-2007 08:50 AM

Yeah, no worries.

But seriously Elim, it's all in the thread just dig back into the August or July posts, Screamin Demon Aus summed it up the best I've seen.
You gotta learn proper support/breathing, and placement.

To sum it up for breathing...
breathe in so that your stomach and lower ribs expand, but your shoulders don't come up.

To sum it up for support...
push down like you are going to the bathroom when screaming to keep the strain out of the throat.

To sum it up for placement...
send the tone up to the soft pallate (the soft part of the roof of your mouth). to practice getting this placement right, practice scales while first gargling water, and then try to imitate a pigeon; it sounds retarded but it shows you where the sound needs to be sent.

step one: close your throat tightly

no... no no no no no NO NO! If you want to take his advice, go ahead, but all you're gonna do is **** up your throat. NEVER use your vocal chords or your throat to produce harsh vocals. Always make sure the sound is coming from your diaphragm (located in your stomache).

HELP! Ok, After about 6 months of flawless harsh vocals including death growls, I stopped practicing for about a month. Now all of a sudden when I go to growl or scream, my throat tightens up on reflex and I end up producing the growl with my vocal chords, which needless to say hurts like hell. I can't figure out how to get it to stop either. I just can't seem to remember how to activate my diaphragm anymore. Anybody have a clue how to help me out here?

i am the robots 09-20-2007 04:21 PM

 I was kidding, settle down.

punknmetal4lyf 09-20-2007 11:04 PM

Update: I just realized later tonight that I'm really tired and my vocal muscles are really fatigued. It's possible that that might have something to do with it. I've been practicing my clean singing pretty heavy duty for the past couple of weeks and I guess it's starting to show itself. Anyway, I'd still like advice please, because I may be wrong. But I'm gonna give my vocal muscles a bit of a breather for a week or so and then try again.

Reigns 10-02-2007 08:02 PM

hey hey, i gots a question.

I mostly sing acoustic songs. But lately people have been wanting me to come by and sing with their bands..mostly different types of rock.

I can sing well however i have trouble at choruses. When i listen to the song to get pitch right, i mean when the original singer sings the chorus, they get into it, almost like mad yelling, yet they are still able to maintain low notes. How do i do this? Someone told me it's an illusion because of the backup vocals, which is probabally the dumbest thing i've ever heard. I don't want to have to force any sound because you know..that would be bad..

Ceresz 10-07-2007 02:43 AM

What voice type would I PROBABLY be if I can go from about E2-C4, and sometimes C2/D2-E4?

Also I am having trouble with my head voice, I'm not sure if I'm using it or not since the notes C5-E5 are really weak, there's no power whatsoever so I would guess I'm using falsetto. Even a note like G6 sounds louder, or just as loud, by doing a sort of inhale. Kinda hard to explain but I hope you understand.

Thanks!
