I have a question for you guys, should a band like Pink Floyd be considered bad because they have a huge following of fans?
Of course not, a large amount of following and supporting fans only proves they're a popular and widely liked band. |
What a moron, that thing should be priceless.
So I watched The Wall DVD again today and I noticed that I really love the animation for Goodbye Blue Sky. Roger Waters said the song was about the rememberance of childhood right before one sets of for the rest of his life, or the movie's case... Pink. This song gives me chills up and down my spine every listen, what is everybody elses favorite scene/part from The Wall?
The Trial, it has some freaky animation edit: has anyone listened to "Dark Side Of The Orchestra... Plays Pink Floyd"? I just downloaded their cover of Us & Them. Awesome stuff :thumb: I just wish they did Comfortably Numb :/ |

Not at all, but what makes you say that? |

Like them or not, they are a huge influence in rock. Creating the first concept album for example... |

Now that is some eerie animation right there... it is very creative, I'll give it that.. but otherwise, it can be scary. Kinda funny too with the giant legs/vagina. I haven't heard any Orchestra Pink Floyd covers, but now you have me curious, I'll definitely check into them. Have you heard the Comfortably Numb cover by Tool? I believe Dream Theater does a cover also... They're both the two best PF covers I've heard, and are actually the only two good covers I'va heard... |

Adam Jones has a much darker tone than Gilmour's, and I wonder how that would sound. |

Awesome "The Wall" Movie and Song analysis... I've been dwelling on The Wall for too long, maybe I should go back and listen to Meddle or something. :) |

I can never remember who did the insturmental parts, but I think it's really good. If you find it, let me knnow what you think of it. |

Creating the first concept album for example...
Yeah, that thread annoyed me, because multiple people had said that they didn't like Floyd because they were overrated. That's a terrible reason for not liking a band. "Yeah I've heard too much good stuff about that band, so I can't like them." |
I jost lost some respect for The Joz
Me too. I have the Dream Theater covers of Comfortably Numb and Hey You. They're the only songs by them I like. Let me know if you guys want them. |

Sounds cool, I'll check it out. :) Yeah, not accepting a band because of its popularity and "over-ratedness" is silly, most people on these boards seem to abuse the word "overrated" easily. Floyd are far from overrated, they inspired many bands, are unique in their own sound, and are unlike any other band out there. Also they created the first concept album, as Gilmour said earlier. If anything, Pink Floyd could be underrated... |
:amaze: I found a trance cover of Comfortably Numb
:amaze: I found a trance cover of Comfortably Numb
Haha, I wonder what the solos sound like :p ... and who in their right mind does a trance cover of a classic rock song.. but I'm sure thats nothing new these days.... |
I would dare say they are some what underrated, in the fact I had always heard they were good, but when I got into them they were way better then I had expected.
|
I can't stand it when people discover DSotM or The Wall but don't explore the rest of PF's catalogue, I had to force two of my friends to overlook Dark Side and TW to hear Animals, WYWH, and Meddle. I'm not saying Dark Side and TW aren't superb albums, because they absolutely are, but it's sad some people don't dig deeper and explore.

Ya, I absolulety love animals now.

Animals has Dogs, which is arguably my favorite PF song.. wait.. I just realized (again) it's too hard to decide on that... but Dogs is a very very great song, but not to neglect the rest of the album cause it's all great. I think it's interesting how there are theories that Roger Waters based the album around Capitalism with the three different levels: Pigs - high class, Dogs - middle class, Sheep - lower class.... very interesting stuff when you read the lyrics with that theory in mind. I'd say Animals is their most underrated album, followed by Meddle. |
I agree, Animals is the most underrated. I listedend to it today. Lyrically and instrumentally it is amazing, and probably better than their previous albums. At least Gilmour's guitar work is a little more fancy.

Actually Communism, and how the pigs controlled everything and decided how everything was to be divided. Pigs (three different ones) is my favorite. |
We should have an in depth chat about analyzing Animals, cause I've heard many things about it and what its about, but I wanna see if we can figure it out. I thought it was capitalism too.

The class factor makes you think it is capitalism, but the fact the pigs are in control (mush like communism today) adn decide who gets what is why it is about communism, plus it is based of Animal Farm, which is a book about communism. |
Yea I knew it was based off Animal Farm, but I've never read it. The lyrics I listen to the most are from Dogs. I've haven't paid much attention to Pigs yet, so I don't really know what's going on.
|
Oh it's based around communism, my bad. Yeah, the classes (Pigs - high class, Dogs - middle, Sheep - lower) made me think it was capitalism but communism could make sence too. It can get really confusing though....
|
Yes, but I thought it was about Communism gone wrong. That is, although it strives to be a classless society, the basic nature of humankind means that a class system still exists. Hence, although the society touts itself as Communist, it appears to be a Capitalist system.
|
I think it's about capitalism actually...if you listen to Dogs, it's very much song from the point of view of an older "dog" (middle class) teaching a younger dog about capitalist ways, and reflecting that maybe he's been taken in by the system as well, and that he doesn't have as much freedom and ability to live his life in a good way as he might want.
Yeah Dogs says it all. |

Wpuldn't that be reflect of communism. Capitalism is based on freedom to choose. |
If you read the lyrics on Sheep, it seems that the sheep are the mindless people who do what their told, and don't ask questions... in this case.. they do what the dogs tell them to do, but the dogs are commanded what to do themselves by the pigs... It's quite confusing in a way...
|
Very good analysis. That's how I interpretted the entire song, I just don't think I'd be able to put it into words like you did. Excellent :thumb:
|
That was pretty good. I don't know if I would of interepted exactly the same, but that was put nicely.
Both of Water's parents were Communists up untill the time Roger's father was sent to War, in case you didn't know. Roger said he grew up with similar beliefs. As he grew up he had more socialist beliefs. And as he got rich, it is obvious that his views changed again. |
