Bob Dylan - Oxford Town 1:47
Begins with an acoustic guitar part. Pretty folksy. I've never been a fan of Dylan but I also haven't heard many songs. The guitar part makes me think of the soundtrack to a boxcar trainride. The vocals aren't as bad as I thou- oh yes they are. He started off being comprehensible and unannoying but then he started sounding stupid like he has a thick tongue. I like the lyrics...sort of. Very simple but nice and they carry some meaning. I also like the volume swell in guitar when the vocals go out. I really do hate this voice. I think I hear a second instrument in there. A mandolin maybe? pretty cool. It's a good thing this song is so short because it is really repetitive. I liked the song better than other Dylan but I'm not swayed to download any more. 6/10 Abigor - I Face The Eternal Winter Agalloch - ...And The Great Cold Death Of The Earth Alchemist - Chinese Whispers Rain Paint - Freeze Day All available through soulseek - Fast Fingers, or AIM - Viking Vs Pirate |

Canvas Solaris - When Solar Winds Collide
this is what a google turned up on them: CANVAS SOLARIS could be classified as “thinking man’'s metal.” Their debut, Spatial/Design, is perplexing technical metal bursting with way too many musical acrobatics to even bother with vocals. The four spacey and ultra complex tracks have a running time of over 25 minutes and cover the gamut of metal'’s many facets. This young trio have learned their lessons well. Their masters are Spiral Architect, Watchtower, Cynic and King Crimson. Their peers are few. Canvas Solaris stands alone. The song starts off with Clean guitar w/ dealy playing 'epic' chords I guess. This is faintly accompanied by a synth to give a very moving intro. This continues untill about 30 secs when the whole band kicks in and the clean guitar switches to distortion. At this point in time think along the lines of sprial architecht riffage, very technical but with the bass providing much more of a steady groove. Actually this riff has elements of Power metal \m/ to it. This section has a kind of disjointed drum part untill about 50 secs where it settles down for a bit give the song a bit of drive before the disjointed rhythm kicks in again. 1:05 and enter a solo descending chord progression before the rest of the band kick back in for a frenzied harmony section with extremly good playing all round. Defintely showcasing instrumental prog at it's finest. The drumming here is slightly Portnoy-esque as it barely sticks to a regular beat. at 2 mins we have an arpegiated riff which appears to be a chours so to speak as we visit by means of more riffing before entering another clean section. This has the feel of a breakdwon section to it with the Tom Rhythm from the drums, it also sounds familiar(Satiani I think) in places. This Clean section then develops into a very emotional all, which at times actually brings to mind some Uematsu work. We then switch back into distortion and re-visit riffage similar to that of the start of the song but this time with a phenomenal guitar solo over the top. This playing is flawless and certainly brings to mind Petrucci in places but in a more easy going way I feel. This solo brings us to the close of the song. I'd say 9/10 this piece was great. My only real vice is with the tones of the guitarist but I can put up with that. This song brings to mind DT but ina less iffy and more easy going way. Definatly great I would reccomend it to any fan of Instrumental Prog. Second review w/ reccomendations coming in a min. |
Alchemist - Chinese Whispers
Here's what a google search turned up on them: Alchemist - Official site. Australian psychedelic metal band. I think I'm going to like this band :) Intro starts off with clean Bass, followed by high hat and with a slight slide w/ dealy we muscle our way into the main idea of the song. And it's heavy. Full band with distortion and good storng vocals. A relaxed tempo with double bass drum provides pace and rhythme for this song, whilst the guitar, though their sounds are muddy, have a kinda middle eastern feel to them. This section of the song continues untill 1:30 when in breaks a supremely heavy riff topped by screamy vocals. We then switch back to the original calmer section with the middle eastern feel, this feel is complemented by little overdubs. We then switch back to extremely heavy section again before this is joined by a little lead guitar fill. At about 3:00 mins ,in keeping with the middle eastern feel, both guitars play seperate melodies, one on clean and one on distortion bothe coming in from seperate channels. After this we progress to a new section and the gutars stay with seperate sounds on different channels and the riffage is supremely good, and the song really gains pace here. The vocals bring to mind Phil Anselmo. After this we change to another section which is a breakdown section and sticks with the middle eastern feel before being joined by fast double kick. The song then changes to bot the guitars on clean playing in a strange harmony with the whole middle eastern feel continuing. The strange harmony disperses and we're left with a relaxing melody. This is accompanied by overdubs from some a synth. At 7:30 a riff of truely epic proprtions and the synth contiues with the over dubs and then prgoresses into a solo whilst the rhythm changes to fit it in a Dream Theater styel before changing back to the epic riff again. Again we have another change with a change in the feel of the song as we descend back intot the heavy riffage again and the vocals re-enter. We switch back to the extremely havey riff w/ the screamed vocals to finish. About a 7/10 I would say. This song had some really great sections, the production was a bit annoying but certianly bearable. Dream Evil - Children of the Night 0:00 Starts off with typical power metal riffing and solo. 0:30 ARG! I can not stand these clean vocals! Something about them just pisses me off beyond all reason. Background riffing is typical power/classic metal. 1:11 Catchy chorus, and vocals go into falsetto, which I don't mind (Dragonforce got me used to falsetto vox) 1:24 More clean vocals. arg. And that pre-chorus section. 2:05 Chorus! CHILDREN OF THE NIGHT, SEARCHING FOR THE LIGHT, FAR AWAY! 2:20 Then it's a different section with more falsetto 2:30 Decent melodic power metal solo. 3:00 Chorus again 3:15 another different section with more falsetto. Then another solo. 4:00 It all builds up to a cool vocal/lead guitar section. Typical power metal really, just fun to listen too. It fades out too fast though! More of this, less of the crap clean vocals! overall 6/10 My suggestions: Vital Remains - Savior to None (Failure for All) Krisiun - March of the Black Hordes epic brutal death metal on both accounts. |
Edit: Undibs, can't get that Krisiun song.

Krisiun - March of the Black Hordes
I'm a fan of Krisiun but haven't heard this particular song so I decided to give it a go. It starts off with a calm intro, the sound of the wind blowing for a little over a minute. Then the music comes in, with some heavy tremolo picking and lots of double bass. This continues on for close to two minutes, with the riffs changing from low to high and back again, but keeping the same pattern. Next part the drums get somewhat more intense and the guitar work picks up a little bit. After maybe 30 seconds or so of this, it goes back to the main riff and double-bass drums until it fades out in the end. 6/10 The fact that it was instrumental caught me off guard, but didn't really diminish that much for me. My main complaint is that there were only two or three main riffs used the entire song, and it got repetitive quickly. Also the lack of a solo, when I know for a fact these guys can shred. Nonetheless, I know for a fact that these guys can do better(and have in the past), so I would definitely listen to more Krisiun. Mutiilation - Bitterness Bloodred(Raw black metal) Deeds of Flesh - Indigienous to the Appalling(Brutal technical death metal) Impaled Nazarene - Hate(black metal) Leviathan - Sardoniscorn(raw black metal) Limbonic Art - Through the Gleams of Death(symphonic black metal) |
Dibs on the Limbonic Art; sounds cool.

Impaled Nazarene - Hate(black metal)
This song begins with an onslaught that is less than melodic. At about 0:20, and organ comes in for a second and the overall sound improves. But soon the vocals replace them. They are the harsh type often associated with death metal. The band has not changed it's tune, it is still smashing about the same 3 chords.
A brief interlude then occurs, where the band changes to a different style for a short time, but soon, we return to the onslaught. At 2:20ish, the song finally changes significantly. At 2:45, we have some Dimmu Borgir style voice over from old movies, reminds me of Puritania (awesome song). The Organ returns once in a while, as do the vocals, but the song is basically unchanging. By now the lack of variety is beginning to get on my nerves, but I am impressed that the drummer has kept up that Kick-Snare-Kick-Snare cliche for 5 minutes at a blistering tempo. Still, this is not offsetting the tedium of this very action. The song's pattern is ABBBABCBBABBC, as far as I can see. So it's far from a turnary piece, and it's also as I said very repetitive. This is not a bad piece, it's just not my sort of thing. I'm more into melodic death myself. Overall: 2/5 My recommendations: Carcass - Keep on rotting in the free world (melodic thrash/death) Kyuss - Demon Cleaner (Pure bred rock, with something extra) Kreator - Coma of Souls (Thrash Metal with melodic influences) Kyuss - Whitewater (Metal, but difficult to classify) |
Kreator - Coma of Souls (Death Metal with melodic influences)
That's some real good melodic death right there  |
