Agreed. It's strange the amount of importance placed on second albums right now. The Strokes, The Vines, Interpol, even Coldplay - they seem to be living and dying by their second albums.
According to one of my "rock & roll elitest" friends, Coldplay's third album is going to be "the biggest thing since The Beatles".

Jimmy_The_Exploder 09-30-2004 01:19 PM

Yeh i agree - second album's seem to be the big decider these days. I reckon its because there were so many solid debuts appearing around 2000 to 2002. They all seemed so full of energy and youth (ie, the vines, interpol, kings of leon, the libertines, the strokes, etc) and I think people are expecting them to keep on creating 'virulent' music (when the bands are wanting to progress to a more mature sound).

But the new interpol album is fantatsic, they have really progressed (they sound more like an early cure or U2 now instead of joy division) and they've made a lot more use of their intruments this time (lots of weird feedback effects and such). I just wish it would have happened with the vines, because their second album was a major disappointment :upset:

Tangy zizzle 09-30-2004 03:25 PM

People (not just here, but critics and commentators) seem to be lumping Interpol in with all these other bands like the Strokes, The Hives, Coldplay etc... I don't like it personally. I mean, Interpol are a phenomenal band but I don't see the reason to lump them with these others.

Cry cry cry.

Tomahawk 09-30-2004 10:07 PM

Well... none of them are very original.

But other than that, they don't sound alike, no.

Little Man being Erased 09-30-2004 11:50 PM

I also, have been diggin' Interpol's new record Antics. I have been looking forward to it for so long and it hasn't disappointed. I've listened to it a fair bit already and I think its getting better with each listen. Now I just can't wait until they come back to Australia for a tour.

br3ad_man 10-01-2004 12:52 AM

Theyre a big rumour for Big Day Out. Lets hope they do it.

Happymeal 10-01-2004 04:38 AM

Can someone introduce me to Tomahawk and Fantomas? I'm still a stranger to Patton, really.

I'm waiting for the Team Sleep album to come out:p

sugar kane 10-01-2004 04:40 AM

CommieCanada 10-01-2004 06:47 AM
Theyre a big rumour for Big Day Out. Lets hope they do it.
And if so, let's hope they play a sideshow in Brissy.

I've been heavily digging The Cure and Modest Mouse.

Happymeal 10-01-2004 07:38 PM

I'm rediscovering Frou Frou and Turin Brakes.

Little Man being Erased 10-01-2004 11:01 PM
Theyre a big rumour for Big Day Out. Lets hope they do it.
Yes, that would be pleasant. And as Tapeworm said, a sideshow would be even better.

If you're just getting into Patton related stuff, then Faith No More and Mr Bungle are much better than Tomahawk and Fantomas. But...

Tomahawk songs:
Rape This Day
Laredo
Mayday
Birdsong
When the Stars Begin to Fall
God Hates a Coward

Fantomas songs:
Page 19
Page 9
Experiment in Terror
Charade
Rosemary's Baby

Happymeal 10-02-2004 05:23 AM

Thanks man. I think I've heard Faith No More when I was still 10, but I never really paid much attention to them. I'll check the other two out too.

br3ad_man 10-02-2004 06:01 AM

My favourite Patton project is Fantomas. Get the ones Tomahawk said plus "The Godfather" and "Page 29". I have 3 FNM albums I think they are waaayyy overrated, I don't see whats so amazing about them.

Dark Hero 10-02-2004 10:57 AM

A band called Cherry Poppin' Daddies.

pixiesfanyo 10-02-2004 12:12 PM

Circle Takes the Square.

Which ones? Album of The Year and King For A Day are pretty over-rated by the Pattonheads.

Iai 10-02-2004 12:40 PM

And by the way, I've been digging Asian Dub Foundation lately. Wayyyy overlooked band.

Happymeal 10-02-2004 03:51 PM

^I liked them a while back. They're trippy fast and cool. I rarely listen to them nowadays though..

I finally bought Loveless by the way. Awesome.

CommieCanada 10-02-2004 04:02 PM

i have been listening to nothing but Elliott Smith

Tangy zizzle 10-02-2004 05:48 PM

The Arcade Fire have impressed me a lot. A damm fine band if ya' ask me.

I've got Angel Dust, King For A Day and Live At Brixton.

ADF are awesome, one of Ed 'Obrien's favourite bands. He thinks that their guitarist is the best guitarist in England. Like you said, way overlooked.

i agree. my brother saw them in Canada, and talked to them. And it was great cause they wished me happy birthday. they are awesome.

Tangy zizzle 10-03-2004 04:06 AM

Nothing new has been pleasuring me lately.

I've been listenin to a lot of mclusky, The Scientist, AFI and Consonant.

OrbDragon 10-03-2004 04:17 AM

I've been enjoying The Cramps, Beck, Soft Machine and Hot Snakes (who I just got into) out...I'm into outrageous music.

Right now I'm listening to Ani DiFranco...can't get enough of her. I heard she and Damien Rice went to Thailand and Burma to work with activists. I sure hope they will collab in the near future.

br3ad_man 10-03-2004 04:40 AM

Hot Snakes rule. That would be awesome to have a collab. between Damien and Ani. I'm going to Thailand in November, they'd better be there when I get there :p

I saw them supporting Radiohead. :)

br3ad_man 10-03-2004 10:08 PM

Nice! I wish Radiohead would come back to Australia, and play a show near where I live...:(

Tomahawk 10-03-2004 10:47 PM

They were here just a few months ago dude.
