I like it alright. I'm in San Francisco with my friends and the weather here is almost always crappy so I was a little disappointed by that. I actually am taking time off from school to pursue the startup thing.
Unless you are planning on starting a medical marijuana dispensary california is just about the worst place to start/own a business.

I assume it's something technology or software related, as you are in the bay area. Or maybe a food truck that sells vegan gyros.

California's economy is in the shitter right now. I completely agree with this post. It's so bad, that food commercials left and right are promoting the hell out of avocados because a huge percentage of the avocados in the country come from California, and that's apparently the only way they can get any sort of financial relief.

ffffffffffffffuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu

another sting from just walking down the road minding my own business. found the stinger left in so it was a bee this time. third time in like 2 weeks. my arm's swollen to like twice the thickness of my other one. well, close to that haha. right fucked off :(

Yeah, we're here for the tech scene. It's pretty nuts. I'm in an incubator (not YCombinator), and it's been an absolute blast, though we work all day everyday and I'm burnt out as fuck.

I have to admit I haven't really been following the economy of California as I'm not sure I'll bere here permanently yes.

funkyhoney 08-28-2011 03:29 AM

So, how bout that new RHCP album?

BenJammin 08-28-2011 06:50 AM

I quite like it. A much better album than Stadium, no filler, and Josh adds some interesting texture to the band, when he's not being a Frusciante-clone.

This is a rare occasion I read what the band says about an album and agree. Which was basically "Yes, we're still RHCP, but this is very different."

I like the keys, too. They do it well. They have done a lot of changing of style song-to-song too. Best since Californication.

fatbandit 08-28-2011 08:55 AM

For reals? I heard the single and decided not to give the album a go. The single was terrible IMO, and most of my friends said the album was only as good as the single. I quite liked By The Way though, and I don't think too many people agree with me on that one being good? If it is a good album though, I'll give it a chance.

FunkMetalBass 08-28-2011 12:23 PM

I didn't even know RHCP put out a new album. Guess I'll have to go check it out.

The single is definitely not a highlight off the album. Not for me anyway. By The Way was good, just different, this is pretty good too. I think with a band like that you can't really compare it to their other works as they're all pretty different.

I think I'm just paranoid about things like that now because my room mate has shit canned both Wasting Light and this album because "there's no songs as good as Monky Wrench or Under The Bridge".

fatbandit 08-29-2011 07:04 AM

Yeah, I heard great things about Wasting Light, and I don't really like it. Maybe 2 songs I dig, and the rest is just inoffensive rock filler, which is what the Foos seem to have become really good at :/ The lead single they do on any album is always killer, they just need to do an album's worth of them :p

Welcome to the pitfalls of labels and contractual agreements to put out an album in a short amount of time. Forced creativity rarely works out for the best.

fatbandit 08-29-2011 09:10 AM

I'd agree sometimes, but probably not in the case of Foo Fighters. I think they're probably one of the few bands who can pretty much do stuff on their own terms, to a degree.

FunkMetalBass 08-29-2011 10:36 AM

Sam Ash had a used Conklin GT-7 for $699 on Saturday. The salesman told me that if I bought it that night (he had another guy that agreed to buy it that night if it it didn't sell by 8pm), he'd let me walk out the door with it for $650 flat (no tax) and a gigbag. I forgot how nicely those basses played. Also a good thing that I was headed to the gym next door and left my wallet at home.

So, now I'm kind of GASsing for a 7-string again.

BenJammin 08-29-2011 03:35 PM

7 strings are neat. I kind of want to go in the other way and get a bangin' 4 string.

FunkMetalBass 08-29-2011 03:56 PM
7 strings are neat. I kind of want to go in the other way and get a bangin' 4 string.
I've had some 4-string fever lately as well. As I work on my P-bass project, I get more and more excited to have one that isn't fretless.

You considering another Stammie in a 4-string?

BenJammin 08-29-2011 04:20 PM

Lmao, no. I don't have the money for anything that nice. If I hadn't bought my Stambaugh when I did, I'd never have been able to get a bass that nice.

In any case, I'm moving across the country in about 7 weeks, so all my funds are tied up in moving expenses.

If I did get another 4, though, I'd probably get a Dingwall Super PJ.

Sounds like you're hooked on the fanned frets. :) I still haven't made the switch.

BenJammin 08-29-2011 05:00 PM

I am very fond of the fanned frets, definitely. My Stambaugh is the most comfortable bass I've ever played. I don't like playing anything else. Of course, I've barely even picked up my bass in the last while, lol, so who knows.

fatbandit 08-30-2011 01:57 AM

Can't quite work out if that rider is super awesome or super jerky!
Can't quite work out if that rider is super awesome or super jerky!
Both. I mean, obviously it has to be stern so that you don't end up with garbage in your salads, but it's humorous enough to let the roadies and venue know that you like to have fun and aren't a total douche.

FunkMetalBass 08-30-2011 11:25 PM

Accidentally came across this video. I thought it was a pretty decent cover.

fatbandit 09-01-2011 10:56 AM

My band split up again haha.

Convectuoso 09-01-2011 03:28 PM

Lol just go it alone man, bands are too stressful to deal with.

FunkMetalBass 09-02-2011 02:42 PM

I was less than 20 feet away from Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater) and Russell Allen (Symphony X) last night. Their new project, Adrenaline Mob, is sounds pretty good and extremely tight. Here is the grainy/blurry cell phone picture for proof:

Funny story of the night: A local band Frequis opened the show and their drummer's toms were virtually inaudible. I asked him after the set if they mic'd his toms at all. He replied, "No, there were only 3 open drum mic channels for my kit; Mike Portnoy took up the rest."

Jaded 09-04-2011 07:19 PM

lazy soundguys...

FunkMetalBass 09-04-2011 08:09 PM
lazy soundguys...
That's what I thought too. It wouldn't be hard to just unplug a few mics (keeping them set up for Portnoy's kit) and plugging them into a few new mics for the opening bands. Everything would still be just fine from the soundcheck.

fatbandit 09-05-2011 09:37 AM

Or tell Portnoy to fuck off and use less mics/drums. Just because he was in Dream Theater doesn't mean he should have the authority to ruin the sound for the other bands. I thought he was supposed to be a nice guy!

FunkMetalBass 09-05-2011 03:46 PM

I'm quite surprised he didn't bring his own sound guy.

BenJammin 09-05-2011 03:58 PM

Somehow, I doubt Mike had anything to do with the way the sound guy did the setup. If he had known, maybe he would have given up some extra mics. Idk. Idc either.

Jaded 09-05-2011 04:29 PM

He got big leagued! You big leaguing me bro?!?!

For so long I was thinking, surely this must be one of those dubs. But noooooooo.

FunkMetalBass 09-07-2011 09:12 AM

Damn I wish I could view it. Youtube is never guaranteed to display video properly in linux.

funkyhoney 09-08-2011 02:54 AM

Hahahahahahha!!!

I was watching and like "Huh? This isn't THAT bad."

Then... Ohhhhh... Shit... I love how they're trying to groove with him still.

fatbandit 09-08-2011 11:05 AM

That was painful. The guy obviously knows some technique I guess, but everything he did sounded bloody terrible.

In other news, I just found a picture of me at work on Google Maps, haha.

 Pics?

Also, gaslight, I have a question for you. What is theory behind playing seventh chords? Do I choose a 7th chord based off the appropriate mode? For example, if I'm playing in the key of C, do I choose:

C maj7
D min7
E min7
F maj7
G 7
A min7
B (half-diminished)7

?
