Yeah, I really like everything Tool has recorded, but I cannot compare them to anything Opeth has done or vice versa. Both great bands, two different worlds.

True that. But someone said something about GR and Tool being similar, I don't see it, if there was Tool influence there, the album would probably have been better IMO. Tool also don't use keyboards a whole lot, unlike Opeth on GR. But maybe some of the guitar rhythm stuff... like that one riff in Ghost of Perdition being similar to The Grudge.

Kaiwaz 02-28-2006 10:02 PM

Yes, I agree completely. I used to think that album was out of touch, but I kinda like Ghost Reveries now. The crazy thing about me and music is, it reminds me of certan places, visions I've seen while listening to a certain song. I rarely get into a song and have total emotions for it on the first few listens, it takes a long time and a lot of breaks to listen to a song and think of memories I've had while listening to it before, sometimes years ago. Ghost Reveries reminds me of last year before I started working at Certified, all good memories.

Shadows 02-28-2006 10:06 PM

I know what you mean. The music that really stays with me is never the stuff I get into as soon as I hear it - it's the stuff that I don't like at first but gradually get into over time. That goes for all of my favorite bands. Usually, stuff I like immediately sounds good for a while but fades out.

Me is thirsty for a new Fragments of Unbecoming album. :( I can't believe we're this close to the release and nothing has been posted or leaked.

Darkness 02-28-2006 10:08 PM

Yeah, usually thats the same with me. Theres few albums/songs/bands that I've liked on first listens, including Opeth. I think the only record that ever appealed to me on first listen was Lateralus by Tool, and Dreaming Neon Black by Nevermore. :D

Crysiss 02-28-2006 10:41 PM

I know what you mean man. First time i heard Harvest i was like "man, this stuff sounds so folky"
You should see my 7 year old sister. She loves harvest for some reason.

Darkness 02-28-2006 11:08 PM

Harvest never really stuck with me... I prefer the acoustic stuff with the sweet finger picking lines.

Crysiss 02-28-2006 11:10 PM

I understand.

Harvest is a pretty good song for sing-alongs come to think of it. so maybe thats why she likes the song. its just funny hearing my little sister sing opeth.

That's what I love about little kids. They don't care what's the hot thing out right now, they choose for themselves if they like it or not.

So true. Kids rock!
My 4 year old nephew is digging The Bends by Radiohead, and my 6 year old niece loves Sleep Now In The Fire by RATM, and Tommy The Cat by Primus.

Great to seem them dance around to the music too, heh.

This one part of Karma I hear "at night i burn flowers" and it cracks me the hell up. I know he's saying something else but its just so funny. Some evil voice talking about burning flowers at night, its just hilarious. Listen to it and you'll hear it.

Mother 03-01-2006 08:58 AM

I just got 'the ghost reveries' .. not bad at all . people I know made it look like its total BS ..

Anyways I have a question.

How Do you pronounce Mikael's last name?

Stormrider 03-01-2006 09:00 AM

So anybody else who loves the part at about 4 :20 into Adevnt ?

Its realy fun to play along too.

I love that part so much it jsut sounds so cool. I've wanted to make a post about that part but i didn't think anyone would know what i was talking about. I didn't think of putting the time where the part was. The part where the bass is bending or sliding is really cool too.

Stormrider 03-01-2006 09:07 AM

I nerver thought it would be such a fun song to play along to.

The funnest (is that a word?) one of their songs i like to play along with is Black Rose Immortal. The only part i dont really know is the second solo.

Stormrider 03-01-2006 10:57 AM

Hah, Im' actualy learning that solo right now. I need to bring it up to speed. Going well so far though. That and the outro are the only thing I need and that song is done.

I did not learn both guitar parts though.

pasulpepe 03-01-2006 11:52 AM

I have listened to orchid and i do think it is one of the best albums i have ever heard

Cardboard Headgear 03-01-2006 12:21 PM

I only learned both parts for a couple of the riffs, no point unless i can play them both at the sime time (which is impossible). One of my favs is this:

- - - - - - - - 5- -3 - - 3- - - - - - - -
- 2-22 - - 2- - - - - 5- - -54 - - - - - - - -

Ah-ker-feld?
I hope that makes sense :/

And Ghost Reveries is good indeed, definitely up to par with the rest of their releases IMO :p

I've heard Oak-er-feld or Awk-er-feld. Either way it doesn't really matter as this discussion happens far too often.

And yes GR is great. Ghost of Perdition is amazing.

Toaster 03-01-2006 02:18 PM

Saw Opeth last night, such a great concert.. \m/

They even covered Deep Purple's (I think?) Soldier Of Fortune.

Stormrider 03-01-2006 04:04 PM

Guess what...me got Still Life :)

First time I see it in a store, at a very good price too 19.99$. Considering everyhting else is 24.99$.

Darkness 03-01-2006 04:29 PM

I wish I had a bought copy of Still Life... :upset:

Do they normally sell their CDs at the gigs? I'd like to pick up Morningrise and Still Life... tired of burnt copies. :(

TojesDolan 03-01-2006 04:34 PM

I don't think they are allowed to with all the record label changing and stuff... but many bands have along the shirts, the pins and the stickers some albums.

On a related note, "Remember Tomorrow" cover is interesting... but the vocals are a bit... I don't know. They aren't really amazing.

MidnightRider 03-01-2006 04:54 PM

As far as Remember Tommorow goes, Opeth > Maiden. I think Mikael's vocals are amazing on it.

Yeah, they didn't have any cd's at the show I went to. They did have a cool Still Life T and several others though.

Why do you see the need to compare the two?
