Eliminator 02-25-2008 03:14 PM

i would play drums more, but my set is a piece of ****

my band wants me to start playing drums now because our guy quit

Bukowski 02-25-2008 03:16 PM

my set is a piece of **** as well, especially since it's lay wasting in my garage for a year. I need to save up for a new one, but I have no job so nothing to save.

Eliminator 02-25-2008 03:19 PM

yeah my set would be okay if i were in some noisy rawk band

but metal and horrible sounding drums dont really go together

Bukowski 02-25-2008 03:27 PM

so what do you currently play in this metal band, Eliminator, if not drums?

Eliminator 02-25-2008 03:28 PM

guitar

YDload 02-25-2008 03:31 PM

hey guys i play my musical instrument regularly and here are some simple songs i have figured out:

samariah 02-25-2008 03:34 PM

i just started learning to play drums. i wish i could practice more but as of now i can only do so at a friends house whose parents also live there. so i have to be there while his parents aren't home otherwise its too loud for them.

Anxious 02-25-2008 03:41 PM

I want to buy a cheap drum set from Target and learn, before I spend my hard earned money on real ones.

Eliminator 02-25-2008 03:42 PM

i got mine from some hick that lived in the middle of nowhere

probably not the best person to buy an instrument from

Anxious 02-25-2008 03:45 PM

I have 3 basses, one of which is a converted fretless.

I used to be really serious about it until the summer. I hated the rut my style was getting into and haven't really touched them since. I pick it up every once in a while to realize I'm still out of ideas.

Eliminator 02-25-2008 03:46 PM

usually when im in a rut i just learn songs by other bands
and it helps me

or i just take a break
or change tuning

playing by yourself sucks though. i dont see how some people can stay holed up in their room all day practicing

Bukowski 02-25-2008 03:49 PM

yeah that was a problem for me back in my old house as well.

If you're really dedicated to becoming good, then you should buy one or two cheap drum pads, and get the book "Stick Control for the Snare Drummer" which is a book filled with various rhythms and rudimental patterns that'll improve your hand coordination and obviously, stick control. If you work on that for a period every day, you'll notice big improvements. It's boring as hell to do, but I just put on some music and play along with that.

If you're just playing for the hell of it, then disregard.

sweboy 02-25-2008 03:50 PM

I haven't really improved my rawk and rawl guitar skills in like 3 years because I'm lazy. I've recently learnt acoustic finger-picking though.

Eliminator 02-25-2008 03:51 PM

yeah ive gotten better at fingerpicking over the last year. i spend like an hour or two every night laying around and playing acoustic until i get tired

(*The Noonward Race*) 02-25-2008 03:52 PM

i play guitar lots im a good musician for a guitar player i can go weedly weedly too tho if i try

my fav thing is slowing down jazz solos cause they have weird fingering theyre fun to figure out

No I would like to become good so I'll have to look into that.

cool, so when i become an underground rock star you can join me on my us tours

Bukowski 02-25-2008 03:56 PM

I broke half my guitar strings while rocking out too hard. I need to get some new ones, and also need to learn how to actually play guitar.

Anxious 02-25-2008 03:56 PM

Yeah, I think playing alone has a lot to do with it.

Bukowski 02-25-2008 04:00 PM

I'm only willing to practise alone now that I actually have the prospect of being in a couple of bands. It's all motivational I guess.

It sucks that I can't find drum tabs on here anymore. Or anywhere.

samariah 02-25-2008 04:01 PM

Do college campuses have sets you can practice on in the music building or something or am i just dreaming.

I probably wouldn't be half as good as I am without Stick Control. The exercises you can do with that book are endless.
I probably wouldn't be half as good as I am without Stick Control. The exercises you can do with that book are endless.
Definitely.

I bought lots of books for drums when I first started playing, and that has been by FAR the most important. It really is literally endless in its depth, and it's the one essential book for drummers imo.

samariah, my college has music facilities that I use often, but that's mainly because I'm doing a music course which allows us access whenever. I think other people from other courses come and go sometimes, though.

Eliminator 02-25-2008 04:09 PM
cool, so when i become an underground rock star you can join me on my us tours
i'll sit in the background strumming an acoustic with the spotlight on you lamenting the crowd with your beautiful underground rock

i sort of want to play drums in my school's jazz band. i play guitar but honestly the drummers we have are pretty weak

samariah 02-25-2008 04:09 PM

Yeah, Im going to look into it and I just read a few reviews quick on that book and it seems pretty valuable so I think I will get it.

Word. I try to spend at least 30 minutes a day just going through some of the pages. I still use a couple of other books though: Art of Bop Drumming, Syncopation, Advanced Funk Studies.

samariah 02-25-2008 04:24 PM

quick subject change for a second

I'm getting frustrated with my roommate. At the beginning of the semester (we are both transfers) we got along really well but over the course of the last like two weeks she's been basically brushing me off whenever I try to talk to her. It's odd because I can't really think of anything I might have done to upset her. And a few days ago she asked me to go to dinner with her tonight because she said she "needed to talk" to me. Then tonight I asked her about dinner and she basically blew it off.
