What don't you like about Orchid?
I love it, and now that I think about it, I would put it above GR.

It's really a great, great album, but I feel that the others are better.

Nostalgia 07-20-2006 09:36 PM

Oh, okay. My list would go something like this:

Orchid
Black Water Park
Damnation
Deliverance
Morningrise
Ghost Reveries
My Arms, Your Hearse (I just cracked this CD yesterday. :()

I've never heard Still Life though.

pate 07-20-2006 09:39 PM

Ooh, you need to.

I went through BWP and SL back-to-back earlier today...2+ hours of non-stop awesomeness.

Killtacular 07-20-2006 10:47 PM
Hm, let's see if I can make a list. It will be my first one ever here.

1. Orchid
2. Ghost Reveries
3. My Arms, Your Hearse
4. Morningrise
5. Damnation
6. Blackwater Park
7. Deliverance
8. Still Life

I think that will suffice. The first four are really hard for me to rank amongst each other. I'm sure my list will be different simply because I ranked GR so high and Still Life so low.
And you call yourself a fan....

Here's my awesometastic list:

1. Still Life
2. Deliverance
3. My Arms, Your Hearse
4. Damnation
5. Morningrise
6. Blackwater Park (tongue my butt)
7. Orchid
8. Ghost Reveries

pate 07-20-2006 10:49 PM

Pretty nice list. Swap Deliverence with BWP and you've just about got my list.

That's the worst list in the history of lists.

Shadius 07-21-2006 08:31 AM
I understand that a lot of Opeth fans don't care for Ghost Reveries, but ranking Orchid as their worst album ever is flat out unacceptable.
Why? The songwriting dosn't hold my interest as much as every other release.

Putting Deliverance in the top 3 is hilarious too. It just screams "We rushed this album and put parts together regardless of how much they might fit". The band even mostly agrees.

Strongest releases: Still Life, Ghost Reveries, My Arms Your Hearse and Damnation.

Inconsistant but still awesome release: Blackwater Park.

Lacking releases: Morningrise, Orchird, Deliverance.

Even the lacking releases have awesome songs, or parts of songs in them, bare in mind. And many, many metal bands would do well to release albums of even that quality.

Shattered_Future 07-21-2006 09:05 AM
I heard the Deliverance album was the heaviest. Would you suggest that over Blackwater Park?
I think there's less singing in that one, so if that's your thing, by all means get Deliverance. I personally don't think the songwriting is as good, and the growls are a lot better on BWP, but there's a few who will disagree with me.

Ben, you have no right to rank Still Life so low, you fool.

Kage 07-21-2006 09:38 AM

Well, I think that rating Still Life as their worst ever is unacceptable. I'm not an old-skool fan, though, so I'm obviously not as badazz.

Meh. Still Life remains my favourite too, I also think that it doesn't deserve to be at the bottom.

Otherside 07-21-2006 09:46 AM

1.Morningrise(THAT'S RIGHT DAMNIT )
2.BWP
3.Still Life
4.Deliverance
5.Damnation

Ghost Reveries would be at the bottom if I were to continue :x

Tyr 07-21-2006 09:59 AM

1. Still Life
2. MAYH
3. BWP
4. Damnation
5. Deliverance
6. GR
7. Morningrise
8. Orchid

Are Opeth any good live? I might have a chance to see them when they come over here.
Are Opeth any good live? I might have a chance to see them when they come over here.
They are KILLER live. One of the best experiences I've ever seen live. Everything sounds so much more awesome.

Otherside 07-21-2006 10:03 AM

Opeth live is pretty much and undescribable experience. Very crowd friendly, and just overall greatness.

I saw a live video of Death Whispered A Lullaby and the atmosphere looked great.

pate 07-21-2006 11:30 AM

Indeed. They are amazing live. Best live sound I've ever heard as well.

Thor 07-21-2006 02:37 PM

Which is perfectly demonstrated by their DVD. That atmosphere is ideal for me because I like concerts where people mosh, but I hate it when people go overboard like at Slayer concerts. It takes away from the musical aspect because you're just fighting to stay alive when you're watching bands like that. With Opeth that's not the case, but the moshing is still there.

Nostalgia 07-21-2006 02:38 PM

That's interesting. Does everyone just stop when they play acoustic songs?

What kind of mishing is it?

Thor 07-21-2006 02:44 PM
That's interesting. Does everyone just stop when they play acoustic songs?

From what I've seen it's just people throwing each other around, and nothing big ever happens. And they do stop during the acoustic songs because it just doesn't fit at all. I mean, could you imagine moshing to a song like "Windowpane"? I don't think so. :thumb:

Nostalgia 07-21-2006 02:46 PM

Haha, yeah, that'd be really strange. I wanna see Opeth so bad though. I'm guessing they'd put on a great show.

Tyr 07-21-2006 02:48 PM

Opeth live is nothing short of amazing.

Oh, they certainly do. :thumb:

Anyone here a fan of the song Nectar? I really got into that track today. The bass work on there is superb.

Tyr 07-21-2006 02:52 PM

Sure, it's good, but I'm not really a fan of Morningrise as a whole.

Shadows 07-21-2006 02:53 PM

I love Morningrise in general.

On a serious note, people who don't worship Opeth's first albums are fools. That is all.

Tyr 07-21-2006 02:54 PM

I just can't stand the lousy production.

Thor 07-21-2006 02:54 PM
I love Morningrise in general.

I don't like Orchid as much as I probably should, but I'm a huge fan of Morningrise. That album is no doubt one of the most amazing albums in the progressive metal genre. To Bid You Farewell also remains to be the most beautiful songs I've ever heard.

Well, it's dinner time for Thor. I'll be back later.

Shadows 07-21-2006 02:55 PM

To Bid You Farewell is a masterpiece, but I prefer Orchid as a whole to Morningrise.
I just can't stand the lousy production.
That definitely holds Orchid and Morningrise back, but the music is still top-notch.

Nostalgia 07-21-2006 02:56 PM

The great thing about Orchid is it has like a lot of really, really great tracks on it. The Twilight Is My Robe is amazing.

On Ghost Reveries I like more of their acoustic stuff, like Isolation Years, or Hours Of Wealth.

I must agree with this, my favorite off Morningrise.

Tyr 07-21-2006 02:58 PM

True, if I could somehow manage to not be disturbed by the production, I would listen to Orchid and Morningrise a lot more than I do now.

EDIT: To ShadowsFallen

Daven 07-21-2006 03:00 PM

The production is not the best, but you can get used to it.

Tyr 07-21-2006 03:01 PM

Probably, I just have to listen time and again 'til I get used to it, I guess.

Nostalgia 07-21-2006 03:02 PM

After hearing that albums so much, I don't even notice the production anymore.

Shadows 07-21-2006 03:02 PM

I've always thought it would be a dream come true if Opeth did to Orchid and Morningrise what Dimmu Borgir did to Stormblast. Go back into the studio and re-record the entire album(s) as if they were making a whole new album. I would only hope they didn't alter any of the music like Dimmu did.

Glad to see you're posting a lot more now.

Tyr 07-21-2006 03:03 PM

I think I'm going to listen to Morningrise tomorrow and see if I can change my mind about the production.

Thor 07-21-2006 03:24 PM

I like the old production in a way because it really adds to the whole atmosphere that those albums needed. Their newer material would sound pretty bad with that production style, but it certainly worked for their earlier songs.

Insipid2000 07-21-2006 03:29 PM

Really, I like the newer production better because its probably easier to listen to I really like the production on Ghost of Pertition.

Thor 07-21-2006 03:35 PM
Really, I like the newer production better because its probably easier to listen to I really like the production on Ghost of Pertition.
Yeah, the new production is close to perfect but I still like the old one because the bass guitar was very distinct and easy to hear. Nowadays Mendez's bass lines are often overshadowed by everything else and that's always been a pet peave of mine.
