You could always try Woods of Ypres, but they don't have growls. Instead they have harsh, black metal-ish vocals. That's the only similar band that I can think of at the moment.

Clunge 07-19-2006 02:40 PM

Righto, I'm on the case .

Shattered_Future 07-19-2006 02:56 PM

NOVEMBERS DOOM!

Why do people not like them that much? I think they're really good.

The Funeral Portrait I could care less about, but Dirge For November has some really awesome parts in it.

Darkness 07-19-2006 02:56 PM

Novembers Dooms a decent band. Just not on the level of Opeth. Dark Feilds for Brilliance is a really sweet song though.

I'm well aware they're not as good as Opeth, but people give them a lot of **** for no good reason. I think they're one of the best American bands around today.

Darkness 07-19-2006 04:34 PM

People give them ****? I didn't know that. I didn't think they got enough attention to get ****.

Det_Nosnip 07-19-2006 04:56 PM

There's always Orphaned Land. They're kinda like a Middle-Eastern Opeth. :D

Txus 07-19-2006 05:00 PM

To the guy asking for recommendations, try these bands:
Novembre
Soundsleep
Sculptured
Drudkh (They have nothing to do with Opeth but they're really similar to Agalloch)
Empyrium

Whale and Wasp 07-19-2006 05:26 PM
Poke.

Righto, I'm really really really into Opeth and Agalloch at the mo and I want to dig up as many bands that are doing similar stuff to these two. Any bands that match these kinda criteria:

- Mixture of clean/growled vocals
- Proggy bits
- Acoustic sections
- Riffage

Anything going is good :).
not metal, but you may be interested in checking out Camel; theyre a prog band from the 70s that mikael cites as one of his big influences

Camel \m/

They may just be the most metal non-metal band.

BurningSky 07-19-2006 07:48 PM

Check out Pelican. They are filed under post-rock, but they switch between really doomy chugging riff and some sweet dissonant acoustic parts. They are all instrumental, though. Still, really great band for anybody with a decent attention span...

The Fire In Our Throats Will Beckon the Thaw is a brilliant piece of music...
People give them ****? I didn't know that. I didn't think they got enough attention to get ****.
Nah, I've seen some people around give them **** before. I don't even remember how I found out about them...think it was on a search for female fronted bands. :p

Shadows 07-19-2006 08:53 PM

I saw the Novembres Doom video for Pale Haunt Departure and I thought it was horrible. Not even close to Opeth's level.

That kinda went the other way then.
I saw the Novembres Doom video for Pale Haunt Departure and I thought it was horrible. Not even close to Opeth's level.
The Pale Haunt is a decent song, but thats not the song I'd use to say the band has some similarities to Opeth. In that song theres no clean sections with there acoustic guitars (kinda like Opeth) and there clean vocals (not as good as Opeth, but still decent).

Killtacular 07-19-2006 09:26 PM
Still Life bores the crap out of me.
Pffffffffffft.

Go listen to your Ghost Reveries, nubcake.

On a side note, My Arms, Your Hearse finally clicked with me. It's in my top 3 now.

Det_Nosnip 07-19-2006 09:45 PM

Yeah, it does that.

Nostalgia 07-19-2006 09:47 PM

My Arms, Your Hearse was just okay for me. Nothing special, really. Orchid and Deliverance still remain my favorite albums.

Killtacular 07-19-2006 09:59 PM

That's how it was for me for about a year, now. After a while I finally 'got it.'

It's a fantastic album.

Stormrider 07-19-2006 10:42 PM

MAYH and Orchid are the Opeth albums I want the most right now :-/

Panvium 07-19-2006 10:43 PM

My Arms, Your Hearse is definitaly my favorite, with Blackwater Park coming in second.

Yeah, it did that with me too. I used to consider MR a lot higher and MAYH was much lower down. They sort of swapped positions over time.

SL>GR>MAYH>D2>BP>D2>MR>O

Shadows 07-20-2006 07:35 AM

MAYH was the first Opeth album that clicked with me.

AA-12 07-20-2006 07:38 AM

That album clicked with me, and clicked hard.

Whale and Wasp 07-20-2006 09:50 AM

the first one that clicked with me was deliverance, then still life \m/ awesome albums

Blackest_Eyes 07-20-2006 11:42 AM

My dad introduced me to Opeth. The first album that I heard was Damnation. I fell in love with that cd. Then my dad showed me Deliverance, and I couldn't even believe it was the same band, but nonetheless, I was blown away. I currently own all 8 albums and I think they're all classics, but I would have to say Blackwater Park and Morningrise are my favorites.

pate 07-20-2006 11:59 AM

1. BWP
2. SL
3. Damnation
4. MAYH
----------------- big dropoff
5. MR
6. Deliverence
-------------------- bigger dropoff
7. Ghost Reveries
8. Orchid

I still love Orchid though, I just love the others more.

That is one awesome dad. My dad listens to really old country... :upset:

bluewizard 07-20-2006 02:58 PM

I bought the Ghost Reveries CD last week and was constantly playing Ghost of Perdition, The Grand Conjuration, and The Baying of The Hounds. The singing is decent but I don't think I'll ever be buying the Damnation CD because I like Opeth the best when the singer growls. Are there any Opeth albums where all the singer does is growl because if so I'd like to get that CD.

Shattered_Future 07-20-2006 03:17 PM

No, most of their songs contain growling and sung passages. Pick up Blackwater Park though...the growls he does on that album are absolutely freaking scary.

bluewizard 07-20-2006 06:13 PM
No, most of their songs contain growling and sung passages. Pick up Blackwater Park though...the growls he does on that album are absolutely freaking scary.
I heard the Deliverance album was the heaviest. Would you suggest that over Blackwater Park?

Darkness 07-20-2006 06:18 PM

If you want the heaviness of it, yeah. Get My Arms, Your Hearse too. Tied with Deliverance for heaviness and amount of growls.

Det_Nosnip 07-20-2006 08:25 PM

Deliverance is a bit more straight-forward heavy and brutal. MAYH is more of an artistic, emotional heaviness.

Darkness 07-20-2006 08:49 PM

Yeah, that's very true.

You're feakin' crazy.

pate 07-20-2006 09:18 PM

How so?

Shadows 07-20-2006 09:22 PM

I understand that a lot of Opeth fans don't care for Ghost Reveries, but ranking Orchid as their worst album ever is flat out unacceptable.

Nostalgia 07-20-2006 09:28 PM

Orchid's their best IMO. I don't dislike Ghost Reveries, but It's not on my top list. BWP is probably my second.

pate 07-20-2006 09:29 PM

Worst is a relative term. I said I still love it, but I love the others more.

Being the worst Opeth album is like being the worst $2000 PRS guitar: it's still pretty ****ing awesome.

Nostalgia 07-20-2006 09:30 PM

What don't you like about Orchid?

Shadows 07-20-2006 09:31 PM

Hm, let's see if I can make a list. It will be my first one ever here.

1. Orchid
2. Ghost Reveries
3. My Arms, Your Hearse
4. Morningrise
5. Damnation
6. Blackwater Park
7. Deliverance
8. Still Life

I think that will suffice. The first four are really hard for me to rank amongst each other. I'm sure my list will be different simply because I ranked GR so high and Still Life so low.
