Just got my Focusrite interface. Quite like how no-nonsense it is, and it was a dream to get working too. So far, so good. Need to get down to some serious sessions in Reaper to see if the drivers and preamps are truly any good though.

Came with some Focusrite VSTs as well, which is a bonus. Hopefully they're decent quality!

Nice avatar.

I'm gonna play snooty engineer and say 'Define decent?"

fatbandit 06-01-2011 06:23 PM

To me as a mere amateur, they're decent if they work equally as well as - or better than - the ones I already have :p Which is mostly what Reaper came with, and a few Stilwell comps etc. I don't really have set criteria though - if I turn something on and it pleases my ears, then I keep it. No biggy if I don't get on with them though, they were free :)

gaslight 06-01-2011 08:01 PM

Fucken snooty engineers :p.

FunkMetalBass 06-01-2011 09:25 PM

Hell yeah, I drafted up plans for some custom saddles for my 8-string bass and the guy over at Zoov Guitars is going to machine them for me. Now I can finally fix the issue of string spacing! I hope his prices are reasonable.

Man I'm so hopped up on caffeine at the moment I can't read/post right.

I read the first half, then was thinking about preamps, then read "hopefully they're decent" and put 2 and 2 together and got 3. Is it the Forte suite or something that it came with?

But yeah don't expect the preamps to blow you away. While focusrite make some good stuff in the higher end, they use their reputation to push the their chinese made stuff.

gaslight 06-01-2011 10:15 PM

Fucking Chinese man.

WW3 will involve them and they won't be on our side. China is a bad country.

On a brighter note I've finally got my home office (read: desk) set up and it's a nifty music station. I've got a bass amp on the floor and a guitar amp on the shelf.

Sufficiently pimp for my needs. All I need to get now is a printer and a chair.

And another bass cabinet and some pedals.

And some guitar pedals.

And a mini keyboard.

And other toys.

Ah, fuck it :upset:. It's never over.

Convectuoso 06-01-2011 11:00 PM

Hahaha I feel you.

Post pics!

fatbandit 06-02-2011 01:44 AM

Yeah man, it's only a home demo thing mostly, so I'm not worried that it isn't going to sound like a Neve or anything! :) Not sure what the suite is it came with tbh. It's a Gate, EQ, Compressor and a Reverb. I'll try them out later. Might get some side chain action going on and try ducking the bass with the kick drum on a couple of mixes. Never done that before, even though I'm always getting told it works.

gaslight 06-02-2011 04:24 AM

Not worth pics man, it's just a desk with a guitar amp on a shelf and some pens and a coaster.

FunkMetalBass 06-03-2011 12:12 PM

I kind of want to build myself a pair of these:

gaslight 06-03-2011 11:23 PM

Within one week of those being commercially available every single Asian will have a pair.

Lol. And within a month, two symphonies will be composed entirely of midi BeatSneaks.

gaslight 06-04-2011 01:08 AM

The horror.

FunkMetalBass 06-04-2011 01:23 AM

Lol. tr00f.

What's been up, gassy? Aside from a sweet new home recording setup, that is.

gaslight 06-04-2011 06:11 AM

I wouldn't say it's sweet, or a recording set-up yet :p. It's doing great for my laptop and cups of tea though.

Nah it should be good for recording, comfortable at least. Not sure how good it feels as a practise space but for learning songs it was alright.

Current news is that I just got inFamous for free off the PSN Welcome Back package and I'm having potato chips and chocolate for dinner tonight, unless I go out and buy some more food.

gaslight 06-05-2011 02:34 AM

Bloody hell, I think setting up a compressor takes more practise than playing bass does.

This is tr00f.

Spaceman Spiff 06-05-2011 11:50 AM

I just got the best distortion pedal the other day. TC Electronic Nova Drive. It's just amazing.

gaslight 06-05-2011 10:13 PM

I like their tuners, haven't gotten to try any of their effects though.

After many hours of tweaking I'm making peace with the fact that there's no "magic bullet" setting for a compressor that will enhance the sound of the bass across all different techniques and shit.

gaslight 06-06-2011 08:45 AM

Trying to decide between getting an Electro Harmonix reverb pedal or the Blackstar HT Reverb, leaning towards the Blackstar.

fatbandit 06-06-2011 09:34 AM

I'd look at the Line 6 or Digitech stuff for reverb pedals maybe? They're like a bazillion times more versatile.

gaslight 06-06-2011 09:58 AM

What would you say makes those more versatile?

BenJammin 06-06-2011 11:11 AM

I have an Electro Harmonix Cathedral reverb pedal. That thing is teh bomb.

fatbandit 06-06-2011 11:13 AM

Smaller and more sounds. Nothing at all wrong with the ones you mentioned btw! But keep options open. With stuff like reverb, it's unlikely one sound will work all the time, so something with a lot of tweaking is best ^_^

FunkMetalBass 06-06-2011 02:26 PM

I can never get into reverb. The only time I could ever see myself using it is in the studio, and I'd rather just use a plugin for that.

BenJammin 06-06-2011 03:00 PM

Love it. One of my favorite effects.

Simpleton 06-06-2011 03:09 PM

reverb for bass in a band setting is fairly useless, its just going to create mud unless you can set the early reflection level really late and create a kind of "arena" effect. for bass i feel delay is a much more useful effect.

but but buddy had the cathedral electro harmonix and it sounds super good on guitar.

gaslight 06-06-2011 09:15 PM

Oh, I wouldn't use it for bass, I'd be using it for guitar.

The Line 6 looks kind of interesting. I already have the Digitech Digiverb, it's a good stompbox but Blackstar, EHX and Line 6 would all be steps up from it.

The Blackstar I'm leaning to because I know they have excellent build quality and a tube for some warmth, EHX have some really fancy options but I think they probably go beyond what I'd actually use.

Convectuoso 06-07-2011 12:17 AM

A tube in a reverb pedal, really? Wow.

Yeah i'm with Doug. Reverb on bass is dumb.

On guitar, plate and spring reverbs are the crux of awesome guitar tones.

gaslight 06-07-2011 02:23 AM

Blackstar throw a tube in all in their pedals, just part of their approach.

I'm not huge into any effects on bass generally speaking. Fun to play around with but I don't want to cart them around or have them on the floor all the time.

On guitar though, reverb is essential to have around.

It's like how singers refuse to do anything without omg sum revurb except slightly less annoying.

Actually probably won't buy a new reverb pedal as soon as I want after all :(. I've got the Filter Twin coming in and have to buy a few more mundane items like a new printer and shit so, guitar toys on the back burner.

FunkMetalBass 06-07-2011 09:15 AM

Singers utilize reverb and, more often (from what I've seen) stereo delay. It really helps to fill out the sound of the vocalwhile preserving the natural qualities.

Perfect example of how to f**k all that up, Particle Man's attempted mix of my band.

fatbandit 06-07-2011 09:54 AM

Reverb's easily my most used effect after drive.

gaslight 06-07-2011 10:46 AM

Sad about my pedal acquisition displays but I'm embarrassingly excited about my new printer coming in. It's going to be shit hot, wireless and all that. Plus I'll bag some stationery.

Will pick up a Polytune most likely too but that store is in the opposite direction.

fatbandit 06-07-2011 06:41 PM

Have to let me know how the polytune is. I'll probably be buried with my turbo tuner, but always nice to see what else is out there :)

gaslight 06-07-2011 09:36 PM

Which Turbo tuner do you have?

I haven't seem them available here. The strobe and enhanced accuracy are pretty tempting prospects, especially considering I don't have that much interest in the flagship feature of the Polytune which is the whole, all strings at once thing.

Damn, now I'm back to the choice board.

FunkMetalBass 06-08-2011 01:01 AM

Hey, remember when I went by Sablate McNuff because it was phoenically "FunkMetalBass" backwards? Haha. Yeah, that was some good sh*t.

**back to writing essay**

fatbandit 06-08-2011 01:17 AM

I've got the pedal Turbo Tuner. Didn't think the accuracy and tracking of my old Korg DT-10 was that bad, but it's frustrating going back to it now. It's smaller than the Boss or the Petersson, and the display is dead easy to read on stage. The only contender for me is the Turbo Tuner or the Polytune.

They're not really cheap though - I had to order mine from America too.

gaslight 06-08-2011 08:18 AM

I had no idea Sablate McNuff had any reasoning behind it.

I think I'll get a Polytune because it's easy, then next acquisition round I'll look into getting that baby.
