I was told that the dude on the far right was Martin Mendez.
So i just listened to The Night And The Silent Water for the first time in a couple weeks and man, what an amazing song. I especially like the acoustic parts in that song. The buildup towards the end is really great too.
I love the outro.

Likewise.

False.

Det_Nosnip 06-20-2006 12:18 PM

Research isn't a forte with you guys, is it?
Requiem Aeternam began its activities in September of 1995 in Montevideo (Uruguay) featuring their first demo in a local compilation. At that time the line-up consisted of Martín López (Amon Amarth; Opeth) on drums, Martín Méndez (Opeth) on bass, Pablo Magallanes on guitar and José Romero (Inner Sanctum) handling guitar and vocal duties.
Both Martins left the band (presumably to go join Opeth...it said lineup change was around 1997), but that picture is presumably an early photo while they were still in the group.

, that dude has black hair, Mendez has brown.

Orchid - The Twilight is My Robe, probably
Morningrise - Black Rose Immortal
My Arms, Your Hearse - April Ethereal
Still Life - Face of Melinda or The Moor, it's a tossup
Blackwater Park - The Leper Affinity
Deliverance - Deliverance or BTPISIO, another tossup
Damnation - Closure
Ghost Reveries - Ghost of Perdition

TojesDolan 06-20-2006 11:09 PM

Black metal is a great way to start your carreer.

If you don't think so, Ask Kiss.

Det_Nosnip 06-20-2006 11:10 PM

Huh? Other than the facepaint, Kiss are as far from black metal as they come...

TojesDolan 06-20-2006 11:15 PM

Yeah they started the aesthetics for Black Metal.

>_>
<_<

Anyway and in a completely unrelated note, I'm asking a friend to bring me either Still Life or My arms, Your hearse. Or Porcupine Tree's Deadwing. Man I'm really digging "Blackfield" and "Lazarus" at the moment...

Nostalgia 06-20-2006 11:19 PM

I don't even really like My Arms, Your Hearse. I don't even know why, but the albums itself doesn't really stand out to me.

Det_Nosnip 06-20-2006 11:20 PM

Oh, speaking of PT...my private lesson with Gavin Harrison is next week! *gloats*

TojesDolan 06-20-2006 11:34 PM

How did you get that? I've only heard of Cain meeting with famous people... John Petrucci that was. Seemed like and interesting meet-up. But have fun nonetheless. :)
I don't even really like My Arms, Your Hearse. I don't even know why, but the albums itself doesn't really stand out to me.
Forgot to ask, did you get all the files of Morningrise? I left the computer alone and when I returned they had closed AIM, and I didn't notice if it got finished or otherwise.

And about MAYH, I wasn't really the biggest supporter of the album, but the files I have of the album are corrupted so I want to rip it correctly.

Yeh only liked a few songs off that CD

JamJar 06-21-2006 01:17 AM

MAYH is terrific imo. The album builds such an amosphere and then builds up the emotion and tension as the album progresses to eventually come to a halt with the beauty that is Epilogue. When is also one of my favourite Opeth songs ever.

Crysiss 06-21-2006 01:31 AM

Im sure everyone will now:eek:

And I noticed no one was speaking of it:p

Det_Nosnip 06-21-2006 05:20 PM

He's coming to the area for a drum clinic (his first one in the US). In addition, he'll also stick around for a few days afterwords in order to give private lessons. I signed up as soon as I found out about it. :)

Captain Quentin 06-22-2006 09:28 PM

good news everyone i have finally gotten into still life, its awesome :thumb:
can anyone recommend what to try next?

Stormrider 06-22-2006 09:38 PM

Havn't you asked that already in here ? :p

Captain Quentin 06-22-2006 09:51 PM

lol, nah i originally asked what to listen to after blackwater park, and they said still life so im asking what would be a good option next :p

Stormrider 06-22-2006 09:55 PM

Oh, my bad. heh

Darkness 06-22-2006 09:56 PM

Go with My Arms, Your Hearse or Deliverance. Or if you want something soft, go Damnation. Then worry about the other three.

Do you prefer Still Life or Blackwater Park?

AA-12 06-22-2006 10:37 PM

Get MA,YH. It's their best album anyway, IMO.

Det_Nosnip 06-22-2006 10:54 PM

Yeah. It'll also prepare you for Morningrise+Orchid, which would be rather shocking if you went straight to them after BWP or Still Life.

Captain Quentin 06-22-2006 11:43 PM
Yeah. It'll also prepare you for Morningrise+Orchid, which would be rather shocking if you went straight to them after BWP or Still Life.
ok. ive heard that the older albums are heavier and heading in the melodic death direction, is this true?
Do you prefer Still Life or Blackwater Park?
i still prefer blackwater park

penelope weird hands 06-23-2006 12:14 AM
ok. ive heard that the older albums are heavier and heading in the melodic death direction, is this true?
Orchid and Morningrise are not heavier than My Arms, Your Hearse or Deliverance, however, they are very melodic with plenty of dual guitar harmonies and blissful acoustic parts.

If I were you, I'd go and grab MA,YH.
I think it, along with and next to Still Life and Blackwater Park, is the core of Opeth's sound.
Although, you may be pleasantly surprised if you go with Damnation next.

Nostalgia 06-23-2006 12:22 AM

My Arms, Your Hearse has a lot of good tracks, but I don't really like it that much. To Bid You Farwell is such a great song though.

TojesDolan 06-23-2006 01:05 AM

The style of Orchid and Morningrise is very different from what Opeth has become lately, so they are good choices only if you dig the sort of Metal of say, Gothenburg Death.

Captain Quentin 06-23-2006 01:52 AM

well i do love my in flames and arch enemy......... :D

Isn't that on Morningrise tho
i still prefer blackwater park
Deliverance?

TojesDolan 06-23-2006 03:07 AM

Yes it is.

Yeah, Deliverance seems like a good way to go. I dislike the vocals a lot, though. Very forced.

jpshortstuff 06-23-2006 05:59 AM

definatly if you prefer BWP go with Deliverence. i got BWP then Deliverence and they're my 2 fav. albums.

Stoo 06-23-2006 07:20 AM

The Deliverance vocals are excellent. Not forced at all... just alot eviler...

And to be honest... just buy all the albums! There will be something you like about each.

I spent ages on here figuring out which ones to buy, trying to see generally what the best albums are. But I ended up buying them all in no real order after the first 3. If they were in the shops I'd buy them. got Morningrise and My Arms, You're Hearse together for a very good price.

NP - When...mmm When.

Alex 06-23-2006 07:43 AM

in my opinion, the very best Opeth album is Blackwater Park. Although the others are all fan-****in-tastic

Toaster 06-23-2006 08:28 AM
Yes it is.

I think it's just the way they were recorded ie. very cheaply. But they're a lot more raspy, and they sound very different from the growling on the other albums. That's the main reason I like them.

Det_Nosnip 06-23-2006 09:08 AM

Plus Lopez tore it up on that record.

:(

I agree, BWP is their best

Captain Quentin 06-23-2006 08:37 PM
