i have an pretty international name... Martin..(like Martin birch .p whooooo... My First name is involved with Maiden :p) Heaven Can Wait is awsome...
Guys... i have an problem i bought Iron Maiden - Live at donnington and Rush - Different Stages today... and.. wich should i listen to?! |
honestly, Rush's Different Stages live album is alot better than Live At Donnington...the tone on the Donnington album isn't the greatest but its still a great setlist!!! i prefer the dvd, and Steve's bass is CRANKED up...Janick is turned down preety low and dosent do justice to H's leads haha.
im glad you got so into Rush!!!! Did you see my post on the Rush thread you made? |
*goes looking for my Rush thread...*
i bought the "Iron Maiden: The legacy of the beast" and "Rush: Rush in Rio" DVDs to.. :D havent seen them yet, im gonna take an all day tomorrow :p |

Wait, so Rush and Iron Maiden both performed concerts in Rio and made live albums out of them? That's insane; apparently those Brazilians like their bass legends.
|
what better place to film a live show than in front of 250,000 screaming Brazilians!! beats the hell out of Canada haha.
|

no i dont have MSN but i have AOL IM if you have that :thumb:
i noticed when i heard on Rush - diffrenet stages yesterday... when i listen to Maiden im usually :D:D:D listened to Geddy's basstreacks i become like :D:D:D x 10 |
If you're new to Maiden, I'd say get one of the compilation CDs, like Edward the Great or Best of the Beast. You'll hear all the songs that made Maiden big, rather than saying their best songs, since like Frailand said you'll find a certain sound that Maiden does better than others and have your own personal favourites. Well, thats what I think instead of buying an original album right away.

^^^
i started out with "best of the beast" as my first actual album and loved it, than i went to studio albums from there (my first being "no prayer for the dying" which i still adore to this day!!). |

Yes, the sound quality of a Rush live show is unmatched lol. did you find your old thread about it? i posted my lenghty list of Rush tracks ( i have it saved on my comp so i dont have to do that everytime Rush is broguht up!!) and Different Stages is my favourite of their 5 live albums by a lanslide. The Donnington setlist is killer!!! just the overall tone isnt the greatest, that whole tour sounded weak live IMO, like i said i prefer the DVD to the CD but some nights when im working ill bring the live Donnington cd and have a little concert in the car hehe. PS: Iron Maiden are rumored to be inducted into the Rock n' Roll hall of fame next year....and to think i went last x-mas :( hehe |
^ That would be ****ing awesome. Them and Priest really deserve to be in it, no doubt.

Here's how I rate my Maiden studio albums from favorite to least favorite:
Seveneth Son of a Seventh Son Somwehere in Time Powerslave Piece of Mind Brave New World Iron Maiden The X Factor Killers The Number of the Beast Dance of Death Fear of the Dark Virtual XI No Prayer for the Dying |
Tell me what you think about this theory of Maiden songs. I think that all Maiden songs are either a narrative of some sort, or a rallying cry against some sort of injustice. Of course, the best ones are a combination of both types, but in general you can boil down any of their songs into those two categories.
My favorite narratives: The Number of the Beast Rime of the Ancient Mariner Flight of Icarus My favorite rallying cries: Die With Your Boots On 2 Minutes to Midnight Powerslave (sort of) But the best ones are the combinations of the two. Like "The Trooper" or "Hallowed Be Thy Name." There's a definite story going on, but it also makes a point. That poor guy getting killed by the Russians is a comment on the futility of war, and the death row prisoner comments on the thoughts of a man facing death. I guess in a way most of their songs fit this category, but I thought it would be easier to split them up a bit. What do you think about this? |
powerslave is a narative, it tells the story of a dying pharoh
|
Brave New World and Dance of Death are my absolute favorites....although all of their albums were amazing....except for virtual xi and that other one that they did with that one guy who sucked a bunch...
|
powerslave is a narative, it tells the story of a dying pharoh
But it also teaches a lesson against people who act like they're immortal, only to wind up dead like everyone else. I guess it's a bit of both, but I couldn't think of a third example. Is "Holy Smoke" better for that category? |
My favorite narratives:
The Number of the Beast- Still to this day one of my favorite Maiden tracks. An instant classic that has the signature stlye of Steve and Adrian/Davey's leads...this signifies the bands sound. Rime of the Ancient Mariner- wonderful epic song with well researched lyrics. I think this had to have been one of the most difficult songs (along with Alexander the Great) to compose the way Steve did...some of their most catchy riffs and a woderful vocal job by Bruce. Flight of Icarus- Shows off how well Bruce and Adrian can write together, they always come up with wonderful songs as a team and this one is their earliest...the music is more simplistic letting Bruce's vocals take the lead in the song and i think thats what makes it so powerful. My favorite rallying cries: Die With Your Boots On- one of my top 5 favourite songs the band ever wrote, every bit and piece of it gets you pumped up and into the song. The prechorus is fantastic and has some awquard chords they use when playing it that make it intresting, Steve's usage of "transition" notes in the verse is wonderful and adds alot of flavor to the riff. when i saw this one live last summer i about died! 2 Minutes to Midnight- a real fan favourite, but never one of my favourites. kind of to "rock n roll-ish" during the intro and verse but the chorus and leads make up for it. a better live song that studio track IMO. Powerslave (sort of)- Bruce took this one on himself and what i dig so much about it is the lyrics. Egyptian mythology being something i am into this is a real trip to listen to under the phryigian scales used by the band, and in typical Maiden fashion the chorus is to die for!! great drumming by Nicko as well! |

i like running free with bruce live better... that song is more like an bruce song... |
i like the songs off the 1st album rather than the live versions like iron maiden, sanctuary, running free. have u ever heard charlotte the harlot live?
|
i like running free with bruce live better... that song is more like an bruce song...
Rubbish! It's a song about a drunken tearaway - not really appropriate for clean living Brucie! Plus Di'anno had a much rawer voice |
i think the beginning of the album version sounds like that song off the full monty
|

vocalvise, the sound of that song with bruce dickinson sounds better IMO |
Paul's voice is moer agressive and raw, but the sound of Iron Maiden is to polished for it IMO and the band wouldnt have reached where they did today with out Bruce. Bruce's sense of songwriting as well brought the band to a new level where Paul was more just a frontman, I enjoy some of the Paul era material with Bruce more but some songs just arnt for him to sing like "Drifter".

yeah, drifter i will agree dont fit for bruce, but if running free hadnt fitted his voice, iron maiden wouldnt played it on about every tour... and, GET BACK THE TWINS! i start to miss em... |
very true, i like Running Free better with Bruce as well as Sanctuary. But Drifter and Another Life (anything that is more "punkish" at times) goes better with Paul, but i like how Bruce handles old classics like Wrathchild and Iron Maiden live as well.
PS: ill bring'um back in due time :) |
hey, i just got an OLD Adrian Smith instructional video off of Kazaa :) really cool!!!
|
