Do you feel that the internet has been responsible for disunity in the diminishing "scene" because any old person can order from the internet and get it and never be part of any "scene"?
Well it depends what you mean by 'scene'. The real glory years of the metal scene (mid 80s for thrash, early 90s for death) had gone by the time I was going to gigs properly. To be honest I don't think it's changed that much. People are still people - weak-minded and prone to being swayed by others opinions. Just look at how people dropped Death metal and bought corpsepaint and spikes. Back in 95 I'd get black metal tapes off people with letters and flyers banging on about "No Mosh" or "No sportswear death metal". I'm sure they're probably listening to Nile or that Cowboy band now. I guess the only real difference is that people are lazy now. No one has to make an effort to get music or to find out about it. It's all there on the net for your lazy perusal.
I think it's too easy to wish great knowlege of metal before time - so people get a good knowlege of hundreds of bands without really listening to the music.
Yes. It also places unfair emphasis on production. If you're only going to give a song one spin before deciding whether you like it then you ain't going to take the trouble to decipher badly recorded music - no matter how good it is.
Tell me please Jondur, as one who was around 15 years ago in the scene and not in nappies, (or who knows?) what "rate" of buying new material you did?
Well for starters - I'm not as old as some people seem to think I am! I'm 28 - I was 13 then and had just got my first two death metal CDs (Covenant and The End Complete). And I bought records and tapes as much as I could. I spent all my pocket money and later paper round money. so I guess it would be a new record every week. And in the height of my tape trading I'd get about 5 tapes a week. I guess the difference was I'd sit down and actively listen to the music. I wouldn't be playing computer games - I'd be listening. And smoking. And probably drinking. |
The internet has definantly changed how people appreciate music. I can still remember the lyrics to just about all the CD's I had growing up, and now that I have so much music I'm unfamiliar with a lot of it.
True. I could probably still tell you the lyrics to so many RATM songs off the top of my head :D These days I always make a big effort listen to the stuff I download and not judge it until I've listened to it in it's entirety. I went through my list of rated albums on sputnik recently and deleted half my ratings because I hadn't listen to the stuff properly. |

I'm so cool, I listen to Orchid, their production is kvlt.

The problem with just giving stuff 1 spin is not just about production. I find that the more I know music, the more I enjoy it. There have been many instances where I've disliked music on the first spin, but it has grown on my like a tumor. THis is true for example with Absurd. First listen to Facta Loqu... and I thought it was ****. But a few more listens and it grew on me and now I love it, even after just 3-4 listens. Appreciating Deicide's Legion is not possible when it's too technical to know what's going on. When you listen to it again and again and learn the album you can know what's happening and you can enjoy it a lot more.
Editz: Upon reflection, the effects of repeated listens are polarising. The more I listen to good stuff the more I enjoy it. The more I listen to bad stuff the more I realise it's ****, or I just find it annoying, or whatever....Repeated listens are important, Dargon! |
So, Lord Worm says he got his nickname from a friend. This friend was a magician and they spent their time together smoking snake ribs.
Apart from the utter strangeness of this, has anyone heard of smoking snake ribs before?
I wondered that too... |
I have to admit, I am guilty of often downloading too much **** like a hyper kid. but I try to listen to it all at least once, unless it's total poopcore or something. When something is sitting right there and you can download it in like 2 minutes, it's hard to resist even when you know you won't have time to listen to it.
I haven't listened to that in literally years, gonna do so today.
i suffer from the same disease |

Can you imagine how long it would take to listen to them all repeatedly? man. Of course if something catches my attention on the first listen, it will get more listens, but if I listen to it once and it's generic and forgettable, then I usually don't listen to it again.
I wondered that too...
Lord Worm eats buckets of worms on stage, but I don't know if the nickname came from the habit, or the habit from the name. |
Habit from the name I believe. I'm just interested in the smoking snake ribs part, haha.

on Met Arch it said that lord worm feeds / fed live worms to the audience....
count me out |
on Met Arch it said that lord worm feeds / fed live worms to the audience....
count me out
I've never heard of him doing that. How reliable it MA? |
It's true and pretty well known that he does that.
|
Oh. Shows how much I know then.
|
It's true and pretty well known that he does that.
Yep. |
maybe 5 beers and cryptopsy would influence me in the consumption of worms....
speaking of live concerts I'm seeing Metallica live at Wembley stadium on sunday. It's gunna suck unless I stick 10 beers down my throat and start headbanging. The support acts are awful, and will fill the place with emo and mallcore kiddies: HIM Machinehead Mastadon Mastadon's OK, saw them open for Slayer....but HIM? WTF!?! Machinehead replaced Bullet for my valentine who dropped out, which is a bit better.... |
maybe 5 beers and cryptopsy would influence me in the consumption of worms....
.
5 Beers? How much do you weigh? |
5 Beers? How much do you weigh?
200lbs approx remember in the UK 5 beers is about 8 in the US |
You must not drink very often then, yea?
I wiegh 150 and it takes me damn near a twelve pack to be influenced by anything... Then again, Me= alcoholic  |
Yeah but you have a drinking problem.
Like 6 beers gets me a buzz, but I weigh less than BRA and don't drink American beer. |
its on the increase....
I'm on my thrid beer of the night and this is the best that I can type without rcorrecting mistakes. |
I can get buzzed off of like 5 shitty beers and i'm HUGE. Then again I don't drink a ton just smoke :o
|
when we talk of beers what are we talking of?
I'm talking this size can http://hress.org/images/bm/fosters.jpg whilst you could be talking stella artois on the back cover of slayer's reign in blood sized can. |
Bottles.
|
Yeah but you have a drinking problem.
Like 6 beers gets me a buzz, but I weigh less than BRA and don't drink American beer.
Yea, I kinda do. what does American beer have to do with it? Meh, doesn't matter I suppose. I drink beer of all sorts, but MGD FTW ultimately. @ beer discussion in the DM thread. Discussion delivers. @ Stevie: Bottles. It takes slightly less for me at the bar though, because tap glasses are larger. Don't tell me that's what you drink. 4.5% alcohol v/w? Pussy. |
i am currently drinking the can i displayed, yes.
bottles are the same quantity as slayer on the back of reign in blood size. so my cans are about double the amount of beer.... and usually are about the same price.... hence **** bottles. |
Bottles/Glass taste so much better though.
|
Bottles/Glass taste so much better though.
I work in a sort of high classed offlicense....they sell fine wines and ales.... I could easily go in there and with a discount get some bottles of beer, but instead I go to an offlicense and buy cans. I used to like ales, but I just enjoy the light beers now....bottles I've always found dissatisfying...and the taste overrated. |
The taste of bottles can't be overrated, because it's that much better.
I even prefer bottle over tap. But I'll take tap over can any day. |
I can't stand to drink any thing out of cans and any thing lighter then hefeweizen. Dark stout beers and nice amber ales is where its at imo.
