Aw, come on, "making sth up" is basically the definition of improvising. It isn't implied in the word "improvise" that is must be good, and/or done with great theoretical knowledge. I think.
No, making stuff up is not the definition of improvising.
No, making stuff up is not the definition of improvising.
If that is not the definition, then what might it be?

Dictionary.com:

1. To invent, compose, or perform with little or no preparation.
2. To play or sing (music) extemporaneously, especially by inventing variations on a melody or creating new melodies in accordance with a set progression of chords.

Well?

You're seriously going to cite Dictionary.com on me?

The first definition is ridiculously off base.

The second one is somewhat closer, but still too simplistic.

If you ever happen to study jazz, you will find out that it is very difficult to actually define what improvisation is. Nearly every good book and educated person out there can tell you what improvisation isn't, but actually defining improvisation is a very difficult task.

This is a nice, concise definition of improvisation, I think:
The basis of traditional forms of improvisation is to create spontaneously and play melodies that are built on the basic chord progression of the song.
The easiest way to understand improvisation is to listen to jazz :D

Insomnidizzle 09-08-2005 05:00 PM

Maybe it's just ridiculously bad improvisation.

Amit 09-08-2005 05:02 PM
Maybe it's just ridiculously bad improvisation.
If it's that bad, then it's not improvisation anymore. It's just making stuff up like a fool.

We should call it unprovisation.

Paganinism sounds like a proper term.

What was I thinking? He disserves to have it named after him.

From this point forward all bad unthought out guitar playing will be known as Paganinism.

People will think you are referring to the composer, Nicolo Paganini.

You're perfectly right :) , I just thought that by the daily, "plebeian",* if you will, use of the word, it was at least somewhat justifiable to use it in the context that Mr. Paganini used it in.**

* Relatively vague reference to: http://www.musicianforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=365021&page=2&pp=25 post #45, quote by Kent Brockman.

** And yeah, I went through all that trouble just to point that out :upset:

It's true. And Chaindrive did coin "prank faganini". :D

I'm in favour of referring to anti improv as "Faganinism" :thumb:
