I saw on a documentary that Townsend was worried that Hendrix would upstage them at the festival, so when he approached Hendrix about the issue, he took it the wrong way. Hendrix thought that The Who wanted to get to the guitar-smashing first in order to claim it as their own. He got so angry that he got up on a chair, and played at Townsend, as if he were challenging him. Then he cooled off and they flipped a coin.
I'm not sure how true that is, but it's a cool story. |

So my moronic friend tried doubting Entwistle's greatness. I showed him Entwistle's little 5:15 solo and he was blown away. I love defending The Who because it's impossible to lose.
I didn't know Entwistle had a solo.. what's it called? |
You never heard My Generation? :| Firs tbass solo ever :|
omg <_< |
Those are really more like fills. Tusk, check out the live versions on 5:15 from any of the recent tours (Royal Albert Hall in 2000, for example). Entwistle has a pretty long solo in the middle that just blows me away.

Hey guys. I'm listening to TKAA and I hacked my cell phone just so I could put in Who wallpaper and a Baba 'O Riley ringtone. Life is good.

Townshend simply saw an opportunity to confront Jimi about what he felt was stealing his guitar smashing bit. Which would seem childish now, but at the time when the Who were an original it makes sense that it would have to happen. At least once. Pete was polite about it, and Jimi told him where to get off. Really just had a few rude words for him and ignored him. Pissed Pete off, but hurt his feelings a bit, too. |
I'm listening to Face Dances now. I must say I like this album quite a lot. And the bonus cuts are great. How did they keep "It's In You" and "I Like Nightmares" off of Face Dances, WTF? Especially It's In You. That's a great song. And "Somebody Saved Me" is very good, eventually landing on a Pete solo album with a somewhat different arrangement. This is good stuff.
Time to reconsider Face Dances, guys. It's held up well. And certainly it's is better then Who Are You and It's Hard, IMO. Oh, and the live bonus cuts are great. A whole different version of "How Can You Do It Alone". It's really only the same song in name. And a great rendition of John's "The Quiet One" |

No. More like a magic bus, perhaps? Or a "mobile" home, maybe... |
I can dig the Magic Bus. I'll sell it to you for 100 English pounds. I won't take under.
I keep listening to the Young Vic show. Maybe because it's the only Who I have on my laptop, or maybe because it's so good. |

I listened to the entire deluxe set today. I think I'll be picking up the Tommy/Quad DVD this week. Lunch, you know The Who don't really have a proper band profile at sputnik. They deserve one. I thought you could edit your FA a bit and add it, doing away with the other. You can edit it for the latest info, or if not, I'll do it once posted. What do you think? A few more albums need review, too. Including the RAH show. I'll be getting around to a couple. The RAH record pretty soon. Although I wish you would do it, as you might be kinder on the "special" guests.... But yeah, the profile. What do you say? |
Yea, sounds good to me. I have a better version of the Who FA on my other computer thast I edited a bit once I learned more about the group after I posted the original FA. Is it legit for me to just go on Sputnik and change a band's bio, or do I have to talk to someone about it first?
Edit: I see now that I am able to change it, so I'll put the FA in there and maybe edit it a few more times. Edit 2: I submitted it so now we're waiting for Mod approval. |

No way I'd be kinder on the special guests. I don't think they destroy the performance or anything but I never saw the point in having them and to me I know the Who could carry on an outstanding concert without all the extra festival crap anyway. |
Great bio you put up, Lunch. That's more like it. It's most likely the best one on sputnik. And it's three or four times bigger then the Beatles, Stones, or Zeppelin bio's. Combined. We rock.
I found this pic while searching for one to replace the sputnik bio pic. It would of been perfect if not for one thing. You may already of seen this or have it in your big Who picture book. But maybe not. It's just so much is made out of an incident involving a couple of the principles in this pic, and I thought this was more like it. Real great picture. I saw The Kids Are Allright this weekend. It was so good I couldn't belive it. I really think that besides perhaps the Woodstock DVD this is the best music dvd of all time. The part at the end of Won't Get Fooled Again when the lights come on at the "YEAHHHHH is one of the best moments in rock.
|
^That is a great moment. It's funny because if you listen to the Young Vic performance when they were first working out the song at the synth break Moon and Townshend are tinkering around during it, as if they weren't really sure if just quieting down was ok. And in the end it's that quiet that eventually came to the song in concert that builds the suspense and really winds up the explosion that begins with Moons drums kicking in and that famous Daltrey scream. It is amazing.

It is. I always say that that one moment, that scream with that slow motion slide by Pete, is perhaps the single greatest moment of Rock History. |

Yeah if I had only ten minutes to show somebody who had never heard a rock song before what it was all about, I would play Won't Get Fooled Again from the Kids Are All Right. It was honestly the most visually stunning performance I've seen for except perhaps Jimi Hendrix's Wild Thing at the Montery Pop Festivle. In fact I like that part so much I was thinking of printing this http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/images/EamonnMcCusker/WhoMovie05.jpg out and making one of those homemade iron on tee shrits. |
Such a great sight. Somewhere in my house, I have a tape of The Kids Are Alright, and recently having seen it for the first time in years, was awestruck. Won't Get Fooled Again live, the most definitive moment in rock and roll history?
I think so. |

A local band did the same thing, albeit on a less impressive scale, a few years back. Got a bloody great cheer from the crowd.

I was looking for that yesterday to make my profile pic. Couldn't find it in a google search. Thanks, it gets the job done. I'm gonna rotate this and one of Pete windmilling. :) Quick question for anyone Who knows or who has the Tommy/Quad DVD. On the Quad tour of '96 am I right in thinking Townshend played only acoustic guitar for those shows with the exception of a few songs and perhaps the encore? I'm pretty sure that is the case but I need to be certain. Any ASAP answers are greatly appreciated. |
The encore is mostly accoustic to even Won't Get FooledAgain :)

Give them some time, they aren't getting out of Europe yet.
|
Hey guys. I've just submitted a review for Live At RAH and someone has already down rated it. :(
Go to sputnik and throw some support behind this one. The Who deserve it. I don't care if you even read the review, go give this under appreciated Who album it's due. The Who will own sputnik yet! :smash: EDIT: And no one answered my question above, WTF? |
That was a really great review John.
Edit: Over the last couple weeks I've noticed that this thread is really the part of R&M I'm into the most. I haven't been posting as much in the good ol' CR thread as I used to and this is the one I go to check first. For that reason I'd just like to tell all the regs here, for those of you who don't know, that my name is Mike. Some other users around the site that are familiar with me know that already, but if you don't there you go. |
/Goes to CD reviews to support one of the greatest bands ever.
Geez, those rockin geezers need to get out of Europe and get over here. They especaily need to come to Detroit! |
Thanks Lunch.
And yeah zabbit, they move slowly these days. I suppose the times of tearing through two sets a night are well past them now. By the time they make it to the states we'll be lucky if they can still stand, much less pull off a performance. I fear Pete might be half blind as well as half deaf, fall off the edge of the stage while leaping, and break a hip. :( |

The best part about living where I do is that if anyone does a US tour, they always come to New York. Getting tickets is another story, but when (not if) The Who come over here, I will be going.

NY ftw. The problem with that is that tickets are always more expensive here (sometimes by a lot) and they sell out much quicker. But I'm not complaining. |
