IMO orchid has the best guitar out of all the Opeth albums

Grey Incision 01-13-2005 04:13 AM

hmm, i think still life is better (my favourite opeth observation)

opeth_oasis 01-13-2005 04:15 AM

lol i knew somebody would say that, yeah it is fantastic, moonlapse vertigo has insane guitar

Grey Incision 01-13-2005 04:16 AM

yep, Moonlapse is my favourite song, fun to play too

bahamut_0 01-13-2005 11:21 AM

Hmm, I don't think I could pick a favourite song off all the albums, I don't really know Still Life and Orchid well enough to pick one.
But as for the others:

Morningrise - The Night and the Silent Water (actually one of my favourite Opeth songs ever)
My Arms Your Hearse - Demon of the Fall (this one changes often enough)
Blackwater Park - The Funeral Portrait (again, one of my favourite ever Opeth songs)
Deliverance - By the Pain I See in Others (my favourite Opeth song atm, though it doesn't seem to be as popular amonst others)
****ation - Windowpane (possibly the best melodic song, ever)

Recently all I've been listening to is Morningrise, and it has quickly become my favourite album. The quality is not that bad at all, and I think the vocals have a lot of emotion in them. The guitar harmonies are amazing too, depite what Mikael said about them. Black Rose Immortal is an amazing song, I love it so much, but The Night and the Silent Water has to be my favourite song. Though not many others seem to like it as much.

Oddly enough, those are my two favorite albums by Opeth (Out of the 6 I have)

Grey Incision 01-13-2005 08:58 PM

Still Life is my favourite, it has, the moor, an opeth fan favourite. It has godhead's lament, an amazing song (listening to it now). Benighted and face of melinda, 2 beautifully mellow songs, probably 2 of Opeth's best on the softer side. Moonlapse vertigo. MY FAVOURITE OPETH SONG!!!:). Serenity painted death, second favourite, hehe. and White cluster, such an emotionally beautiful song once again.

Still Life definatly is my favourite, rock forthward opeth :) \m/

CaptainWaits 01-13-2005 09:11 PM

Picked up "Deliverance" today

Grey Incision 01-13-2005 09:19 PM

awesome

guys, i need help, i am converting someone into an opeth fan, they really like patterns in the ivy 2, hope leaves, and most of their softer stuff. but i need to introduce them to the heavier side, and i was thinking drapery falls maybe? i need a song that is a good introductory song for their heavy side

relliK 01-13-2005 09:22 PM

I havent heard Orchid and Morningrise yet.So....

My Arms, Your Hearse-When(my first Opeth song, I knew my life was going to change once I heard it)
Still Life-The Moor
Blackwater Park-The Leper Affinity(fav. Opeth track ever.Nothing puts me in a trance like this song.I admit I almost cried the first time I heard it when I was high.)
Deliverance-Deliverance
****ation-In My Time of Need

The Drapery Falls is only heavy for a couple minutes. Most of it is soft.I'd say The Leper Affinity, Deliverance, When, Demon of the Fall, April Ethereal. If I had to pick out of those, go with The Leper Affinity.

Face of Melinda? No growling in it though...

Possibly Dirge for November then.

I'd say Wreath, Deliverance, or By the Pain I See in Others. Deliverance(IMO) contained the heaviest stuff they've done.

Edit: I misread...you want an intro to the heaviness. I'd second The Drapery Falls and The Leper Affinity, and also add:

White Cluster
Karma
Demon of the Fall
Nectar
Godhead's Lament
Blackwater Park
Moonlapse Vertigo

Det_Nosnip 01-13-2005 10:09 PM

I'd say the Moor. It's nice and progressive, the intro is ridiculously cool, and it's balanced enough to not completely destroy the poor listener. I played that for someone who hadn't liked Opeth at first, and he liked it alot. Maybe Drapery Falls and then that?

bozotheguitarplayer 01-13-2005 10:25 PM

Bleak... :thumb:

The Moor... that's the first Opeth song I ever heard off the first album I ever heard. Needless to say I like it alot.

Grey Incision 01-14-2005 12:46 AM

yeah, might go the moor, if it's any help, the person normally listens to indie sort of stuff. and when i said i was introducing the person to Opeth's heavier side, i actually did mean introduce, i'm not going to make them listen to wreath or demon of the fall straight away, that would put them off instantly.........the moor seems a good choice

bball_1523 01-14-2005 02:01 AM

"when" got me into Opeth instantly.

opeth_oasis 01-14-2005 03:46 AM

The Moor for sure, it is the best for this person in so many ways

opeth_oasis 01-14-2005 04:13 AM

maybe masters apprentices?? I know its really heavy but its got a realy beautiful soft part in the middle.

Grey Incision 01-14-2005 05:17 AM

hmm, maybe, but i think i need a song that has the heavier part in the middle, and a softer/lighter start, that's why i thought of drapery falls, the moor is a good choice, so is dirge for november

opeth_oasis 01-14-2005 08:40 PM

first heavy opeth song i heard was deliverance

opeth_oasis 01-15-2005 02:22 AM

what would be your favourite Opeth instrumental? Mine would be Madrigal, its beautiful and fits straight into the next track on the album, April Ethereal

Det_Nosnip 01-15-2005 02:24 AM

Ending Credits is the first thing that springs to mind....I love that smooth guitar line.

Been rather quiete on the Opeth front lately....what ARE those guys up to? Supposed to be working on a new album and securing a new label, but it bothers me that we pretty much haven't heard a peep since Dimebag died (RIP).

opeth_oasis 01-15-2005 02:31 AM

maybe they are grieving....................

Grey Incision 01-15-2005 04:15 AM
what would be your favourite Opeth instrumental? Mine would be Madrigal, its beautiful and fits straight into the next track on the album, April Ethereal
actually, the amen corner is the next song on the album. april ethereal is after prologue.

my favourite instrumental(s) would have to be, epilogue and silhoutte

opeth_oasis 01-15-2005 04:24 AM

oh **** im wrong, thats what i meant, im way over my head. Epilogue is fantastic, great harmonies.

Grey Incision 01-15-2005 04:24 AM
oh **** im wrong, thats what i meant, im way over my head. Epilogue is fantastic, great harmonies.
yeah, it's also a really fun song to play:)

The Flabbit Rides High 01-15-2005 05:29 AM

I always thought For Absent Friends was their best acoustic instumental?

Do you guys think its under-rated? its simple yet (as Opeth does) conveys so much emotion. I guess it must have been the synth stuff they used on Deliverance.

opinions?

~Asphyxia~ 01-15-2005 06:53 AM

I like Credence. It almost sounds like a jam, but really well organised. Plus i can play it \m/ (its not hard xD). Its not really an instrumental, but meh.
