NCIS gets everything right, always. Relevant: http://www.cracked.com/article_19160_8-scenes-that-prove-hollywood-doesnt-get-technology.html |
Gotta love Cracked. May not always be the best quality and they tend to steal a fair bit of material but who cares, something new to be amused at almost every day, and it doesn't cost one red cent.

Or a copper cent, if you live in America. I like their numbered articles. They always have great commentary and damn-accurate, factual information. I read it every day and always find myself learning something new. |
Yeah, one of my favourite things is that vibe it has of the truth behind X thing, it's a great formula they've got.

Btw we had a tornado in our city last week, thanks for fuckin' asking guys.
But srsly, it was no where near where I live, but only like a 20 minutes drive with no traffic. And it killed one dude. Came out of nowhere and fucked shit up. |

I think more than one dude has to die for the US to care, or something. Did you see it? Were you scared shitless? |
Dilemma. Going to be getting the Pod HD500, and pairing it with a power amp. But do I run it with a Mesa Strategy, or a Powersoft power amp? Both came up recently in the same kind of price range second hand, and I can only afford one. The Mesa is heavier and bulkier, I won't use half the valves in it (it's stereo, and I'll be running a single channel), but it is valvey. But the Powersoft is reeeeally light cuz its class D, 1u high and still 1000w per side at 4 ohms. Could also add any 1u preamp I wanted into a 2u rack, permanently plugged into channel 2 as a backup pre if I needed it, without any real extra bulk or weight. But it won't be adding valve warmth and stuff to the Pod.
I've heard a lot of people say modelling preamps needs a valve power amp to warm it up and make it respond naturally, but I don't know really :/ They're both pretty much top of the heap for valve and SS power amps. |
idk what most of that means
|
Basically:
Lightweight, convenient, relatively compact. or.... Valves. |
I wouldn't trust a Line 6 head.
|
It would only be a Line 6 preamp and effects. Considering I use Line 6 effects already, it doesn't seem a massive leap to me.

In my opinion, if you're going to split them up, go for a nice preamp (possibly one with a tube gain stage), and a clean, quiet, powerful power amp. Also, IT'S 1000W PER CHANNEL AT 1U! There's a guy on Talkbass who has been building a sexy 1U tube pre that I'm really interested in. He's located in the states, and I don't know what his cost is, but it sounds amazing. Here's the thread link: http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f15/jgrs-custom-built-rock-bass-tube-preamp-done-709019/ |
I've wanted the Powersoft amp for years - they're like £1700 retail though for that model D: But they kind of seemed redundant when I went down the valve route. I'm just worried about it sounding artificial through a SS power amp mainly. It's what I'm leaning towards though.
|
SS power amps are okay, solid state power amp in my AG500 and that baby is molten.
|
I think I'll go for it. Pretty excited actually. That's sad haha.

I don't think it'll sound "artificial" at all. Granted, it wont have the warm tube sound that you're used to with your MatAmp, but you might even appreciate the clear signal when using your Line 6 - you'll hear exactly what you EQ. And seriously, that much power + portability and at only 2U? Golden. |
Sorry to state the obvious, why don't you just test them next to other.
If it was up to me, tubes all the way. I'm sorry but tubes rule. |
Tubes are great but tube equipment is heavier and more expensive than solid state equipment and takes up more room too.
If you're setting up a studio, tubes all the way, but if you've got to haul your rig around all the time, fuck that shit. |

Well, it's not the tubes themselves that weigh more, just they are typically housed in bulky, heavy housings.
Example, Aguilar DB751 = 19kg 3U, Aguilar AG500 = 8kg 2U. |
Joel, I can't test them both side by side unfortunately. They're both up for sale second hand, and they're both like 100 miles away haha.
Valves do rule though, you're right. I don't mind heavy equipment that much, you only carry it for like 30 seconds at a time anyway. But I've still got my Matamp if I want some valve sounds I guess? Idk. |
30 seconds? I wish :p.
I've done one hour walks with my bass and amp head before. |
Hah, if I used a microhead, that would be easy! Stick it in gig bag, sling on back and walk! I regularly walk a long way with my bass, but never a head too.
|
My head is pretty light, not quite 10kg, but still, wasn't a fun walk.
I'm pretty tickled by the Tone Hammer 500 head, but I just don't need it as much as I need the 30 or so other things I want to buy before that. |

By construction, they are typically made with a lot of iron, which is where the majority of tube head weight comes from. |
I need to get some girls to move into my house to lessen my share of the rent, also I'm sick of cleaning.

Really dude? Are you that dense to think that ALL women do is clean? Jesus, the attitude of you Aussies... ...they cook too. |
Of course not fair 'Merican, I know heaps of girls who can't cook or clean.
I'm just saying, I specifically want to share my house with girls who have said skills. Why would I want to share my living space with useless people :p. |
I'm pretty tickled by the Tone Hammer 500 head
Thought you might be. |
It'd fit right in my gig bag which is pretty awesome.
I'd have to get to play through it first though, and even then I won't buy it because I've got no money for such things. But you know, if I can get some girls to move into my spare rooms I'll have to pay about $250 less rent a week and that'd certainly make it easier to acquire extra happiness. I mean, possessions. |
Well I used to own the Tonehammer, and it sounded sweet as a preamp to my ears. To be honest, it seems like apples and pears if you've already got the AG500. Size seems to be the only REAL difference, even if the circuits are a bit different.
|
Yeah, it's true.
The thing about the Tone Hammer 500 is, while it would fit in my gig bag's pouch, it's not like I could fit anything else in there afterwards which is kind of shitty. |
8 more articles read and 10 more paragraphs to write, and then I can go to bed so that I can wake up in 6 hours and submit everything. I'm so glad my semester ends tomorrow/today.
|
I soldered all of the resistors and most of the jumpers onto my proto board last night. w00t! I'm now just that much closer to finishing that tube OD pedal.
|
Choice bro.
I'm likely to order a new bass tomorrow, gotta get it priced, but our dollar is strong like bear at the moment so it seems like a good time. |
What bass?

Ibanez SR4505E

Natural or Espresso?
I really like dark bodies and maple fretboards. |
Sexy blonde for me, already have my SR500 which is a brunette and my SR706 which is a coloured girl.
