and I just rewired my pedalboard for it's final (I think... for now) version.
Productive me. |
What makes you think the 15/6 wouldn't be enough?
I like having speakers at ear level. Also, two 15's would increase amp volume and reproduce low notes more efficiently with equivalent amp power. Mostly, I like the idea of a big rig behind me. |

Productive me.
Congrats, dudesy. Pics? I'm still trying to figure out how to add a mic-stand holder onto my pedal board for either mic usage or for a stand for my theremin. I'll probably end up modifying the pedalboard design and re-building it once I solve the stand issue and get a decent wireless setup. |
Pretty poor phone photo, but it's this.

How do you like the George L's?
|
Just fine.
I couldn't physically have that much stuff on a Pedaltrain 2 if I used soldered plugs. |
our label's made our album sound like shit, frankly.

That blowz, dude. |
also just bought an SM57. i would really love to be able to do some recordings with my amp now, i just don't have a suitable place to do it.
You may be unhappy with a 57 on bass, specially if you're downtuning. But it might work. Just experiment and try use a good pre amp. RE: you other post... How is it sounding? Are you authorized to send me/anyone the mixes? |
57s are good mics to have around for most purposes tbh. Proper workhorse, so I'm sure I'll find a use for it. I don't downtune, but I'd plan to mix it with a DI signal anyway. S'all good.
And it just sounds flat, and the guy who recorded it has edited it all to pull it right into the tempo track, and it just sounds mechanical and horrid. We're not that kind of band. It's not something we can fix by just mixing it better. doush[uioahra iugh[ai bdf['b fv |
That sucks fatbandit :[
Next time, take the money for studio recording, buy isolation foam, some good monitors, and some good recording software and get the tone your looking for. |
We asked if we could record elsewhere and have total control over it, but part of the contract with the label is that we recorded with them, so they can guarantee the er... quality. We had no problem with it in theory, as it is a good studio. But the guy only seems to normally record metal bands. And we don't sound good produced like a metal band.

Gig on Friday night went well. Our set got cut short by 20 minutes by the other 2 bands running over their allotted time, which was lame, but we still played 40 minutes, and made some new fans, I think. The venue booking agent liked us a lot and said we're definitely going to be back for more gigs later. A bit of a low turn out, but that's mostly because of the fact that it's a university city and a long weekend, so no one was around. And we got paid, so that's pretty clutch.
Pretty poor phone photo, but it's this.
This picture makes me want just the M9, it looks so sexy. About the recording: OH god. I've heard of mix engineers beat detective-ing things that don't need it. Tell him to reduce the strength on the region conform options in Beat Detective. It basically means it snaps the region only to like say 50% closer to the grid opposed to completely to the grid. Or ya know...don't beat detective it. Upload samples when and if you can. I bought a new amp the other day on a whim. My one isn't cutting it at practice so it's time to upgrade. It was on trademe (ebay-esque site) and it was at 300 with no bids and 1 hour or so to go. It's a Marshall b150. I got it for 310, someone tried to snipe me lol. They don't sell them anymore, but they got very positive reviews and the features are immense. No tubes but if you look them up they have a tube-ish drive gain on it, time will tell if it sounds pants or not. Anyone played this amp? |
The closest I've heard to transistors sounding like valve drive is surprisingly the Crate Power Block, also discontinued. Missed them when they were being sold off for £50, but I'd still like to pick one up. www.myspace.com/littlemissmachete - the track I Can't Wake Up is a Power Block direct to a desk with a Precision. The other tracks are a Marshall VBA400 with a 4x12. Many valves. Not my band, but worth a listen :) But no, not tried that particular amp... Might want to look at a pedal like the Catalinbread SFT if you want to make it sound valvier?
I think the Beat Detective-ing is already a done deed. He did it when we weren't there, so it was a bit of a wtf moment when I heard it. Knew he'd be doing it to a certain extent, but he's taken the piss with general editing as well, not just beatmatching. The guy mixing it can't fix everything, as sympathetic as he is to our plight :/ We'll see how it turns out though. The M9 is pretty groovy. It's like a super super DL4, with loads more effects in. I prefer singles like on my massive old board I think, but this is just so much more flexible and convenient for the sake of suffering audio that the layman won't notice. Well worth it :) |
I have a Crate Power Block. :) Picked it up at Guitar Center used for $99 one day, but then I had a coupon and got it for $75 + tax. Great little amp. I really like using it for guitar and the bass is actually decent through it.
I also have a Crate C10 (discontinued 10W guitar practice amp), but the thing sounds absolutely delicious and I'm really curious to see how it sounds tracking with a bass. |
It's been so long since I had instant coffee I'd almost forgotten how **** it is... Almost.

Well worth it :)
I already have a Marshall Jackhammer OD/Distortion Pedal which actually sounds pretty good. It's just tainted by the fact I have to use max gain an volume on my amp to be even remotely heard at practice. So I'm getting a **** load of solid state distortion in the mix. Sounds way better at lower volumes though. But if the overdrive on the Marshall is better I'll sell the Jackhammer. The bass tone in that song actually sounds really good lol. Way to go Crate. Actually looking at getting the Korg AX3000B soon. It's basically Korg's answer to the M9 or Bass PodXT live for about 300 less. Going to test it out next weekend. If it's good I'll probably be set for a few years in terms of a rig. And as you said, almost no one can tell the difference between a good, bankable multi fx pedal and individuals in a live setting. Plus it's way more cost efficient. Anyone tried it for the sake of having yet more arbitrary internet opinions to influence by spending habits? :chug: As for the recordings: If he still has the original sessions he should be able to just import the unedited tracks into the mixed session to compare. God I hate labels though, they're so difficult. |
How pathetic is it that I'm wanting to replace some of my furniture in my bedroom to make room for my amp?
I'm hoping to start building a nice 10-space rack case this week too. |
How pathetic is beat detective?

I still have my Roland DB500 which is a similarly powered combo. For what it's worth, it sounded ace, but if I really pushed it at a gig, it would need a few days recovery before it sounded right again o_O Try it and see though - it might surprise you :) A lot depends on your band, and the size/shape of the room you practice in. But I bet you know that ;p
Actually looking at getting the Korg AX3000B soon. It's basically Korg's answer to the M9 or Bass PodXT live for about 300 less. Going to test it out next weekend. There are still things that it doesn't do so well, and I find that pretty similar across most Multi FX, and that's why I still have some separates. Don't ditch your distortions ;)
As for the recordings: If he still has the original sessions he should be able to just import the unedited tracks into the mixed session to compare. My basses still aren't out of the shop yet. Gah
|
I should've gone to the Jello Biafra concert last night.
The band is no DK, but it still would've been fun. |

I'll just mention that this is on my 60 watt Hiwatt combo. Haven't got the Marshall yet, if you didn't realise. I don't think the Marshall will have any problems at practice. Hopefully.. Joel, I miss you. We have almost the same name IRL.

See how you go! :) Should keep up though, and if it doesn't, just sell it on :p

Loads of things will sound good, but it's the most intuitive interface for a multi I've ever come across. Saying that, I have little experience with the Korg, and I do like a LOT of Korg stuff, so go nuts ^_^
Lol what a nublet.
Agreed. |
I tried practicing with my theremin last night. Then I realized that I didn't have a clue what I was supposed to try to practice.
I'm thinking I need to plug it into my chromatic tuner and sit there and note match to get the arm technique down. |

Lol. Easier said than done. I tried doing that for about 20 minutes last night and had maybe 30 seconds worth of in-key melodies, which were really just one or two notes held out with a vibrato. |

I'm sure it's not easy to begin with, but no instrument is. It seems you've got the right idea, though. |
