Meatshield 02-18-2006 04:57 PM

maybe, yeah.

Kaiwaz 02-18-2006 04:57 PM
I have a question - does Mikael use a mouthharp in windowpane, or is that some other instrument?
No. You were probably hearing something else while he had his pick in his mouth.

Seed Awakening 02-18-2006 06:51 PM

Doubt it. Nothing like that listened in the credits for Damnation, could be wrong though.

Kaiwaz 02-18-2006 06:57 PM

If he did, it'd be pretty noticeable. Welcome to the forums! :)
They're not really a Christian band...the songs After Forever and Lord of This World and Into the Void have a pretty Christian slant to them but most other Sabbath references to religion are along the lines of "Don't need it/want it, etc."

Perhaps they briefly converted while making the Master of Reality album?
I don't think so, I mean they're pretty Christian throughout their career. Their title song, for example, may portray a dark, scary figure, but Ozzy is saying he's scared of it, in fact, and is basically asking God to help him "OOOH NOO LORD PLEASE HELP ME". Still, it is a pretty damn dark song. I could see hardcore Christians thinking it was some sort of Satanist thing. Plus, The Wizard could not be about some Tolkien character but it sounds like some sort of Jesus figure, perhaps? He seems to be magical, walking around healing and making people happy, the song says.

Seed Awakening 02-18-2006 07:05 PM

My buddy once told me that Sabbath wrote some christian lyrics, specifically on the Master of Reality album, under the influence of their manager because he wanted the group to downplay their satanic image, I don't think this is true but who knows.

Woah, if they did it just because their manager said so that would be lame.

Seed Awakening 02-18-2006 07:12 PM

Agreed. But I wouldn't take it seriously, my buddies a bit of a moron

Seed Awakening 02-18-2006 07:23 PM

We should get back to something Opeth related. Has anybody heard any news about the Akerfeldt/Wilson project?

Darkness 02-18-2006 07:26 PM

^Wasn't Portnoy going to be involved in that? I know that kinda seems unlikly, but Mikeal does thank him the GR booklet.

Seed Awakening 02-18-2006 07:31 PM

I think so, but I don't think there's been anything official released.

Shattered_Future 02-18-2006 09:28 PM

Man, Opeth keeps changing their setlist now? I heard they took out Demon Of The Fall now.

MidnightRider 02-18-2006 09:29 PM

Damn, an Akerfeldt/Wilson/Portnoy project would be insane. I doubt it will ever happen.

Kaiwaz 02-18-2006 09:35 PM

Yeah, that'd be cool. I'd rather see Akerfeldt do another Bloodbath album though. His voice is so perfect with them.

Stormrider 02-19-2006 08:07 AM

NP Blackwater Park

Finally I'm listeing to it. I had only heard a few parts of the song but never the whole thing.

Kaiwaz 02-19-2006 11:50 AM

^^ well, what did you think?

Shattered_Future 02-19-2006 11:51 AM

Blackwater Park isn't all it's cracked up to be, I think. It drags on HORRIBLY in places.

However, the growled parts are the best on the album, which brings the song up to average.

MidnightRider 02-19-2006 11:55 AM

It took BWP a long time to grow on me, but I love it now. I don't think it drags on that bad, I never get bored with it. The growls are amazing.

Treebeard 02-19-2006 12:02 PM

Does anyone know any of the set lists that have been played so far?

Kaiwaz 02-19-2006 12:04 PM

I love how it fades off into that really slow riff for a while, it builds up to the climax so perfectly. :)

Seed Awakening 02-19-2006 12:10 PM
Does anyone know any of the set lists that have been played so far?
When I saw them with Nevermore in Toronto they played something like:

Baying of the Hounds
When
Deliverance
In My Time of Need
Bleak
Grand Conjuration
Face of Melinda
Blackwater Park
Demon of the Fall

They usually play Demon of the Fall as an encore, unless the crowd sucks I guess.

Stormrider 02-19-2006 12:11 PM
^^ well, what did you think?
It was good. I'll have to listen to it again though...after one listen to an Opeth song, not everything goes in :)

Kaiwaz 02-19-2006 12:20 PM

yeah, give it a few listens...it's grow on you like vines. \m/ -_- \m/

Stormrider 02-19-2006 12:24 PM

Yeah I will.

I also listened to Forest of October for the first time. Once again, I'll have to listen to it again :p I liked it though.

Seed Awakening 02-19-2006 12:24 PM

Blackwater Park is a sick song, my second favorite from that album other then Bleak. I found it was better live, Mikael sounds way more evil.

TojesDolan 02-19-2006 12:24 PM

The biggest drag-on in Blackwater Park is the acoustic part after the first stanza. If it was put a little bit... probably some good minutes after that, I suppose it could've been better. But no. It's too boring considering the... mood of the song up to that point.

On a related note, let's also discuss... our favorite line songs in Opeth songs. I start.

Deliverance, somewhere after the growled section finishes:

the piercing sounds you make
soaring higher, higher now
and once left in my wake
your memory is nothing but the scars on me

And, Hope leaves, the chorus thingy:

There is a wound that's always bleeding
There is a road I'm always walking
And I know you'll never return to this place

Yeah, out of that part, those are the ones I have very stuck in my head at the moment.

Seed Awakening 02-19-2006 12:26 PM

I like the last verse of Windowpane:

Haunting loneliness in the eye
Skin covering a secret scar
His hand is waving a goodbye
There's no response or action returned

There is deep prejudice in me
Outshines all reason inside
Given dreams all ridden with pain
And projected unto the last

Shattered_Future 02-19-2006 12:34 PM

The second verse of Bleak:

Moving/I am moving closer to your side
Luring/You are luring me into the night
Crying/Who is crying for you here?
Dying/I am dying fast inside your tears

Everytime he growls that line, it gives me goosebumps...

Kaiwaz 02-19-2006 12:43 PM
Yeah I will.
