What program are you using to record?.. And what mic are you using?

clearvision 07-05-2005 07:04 AM

I have a Panasound HS - 855 mic and I'm using Cool edit pro 2.0

I think the problem is I don't really know how to compress my sound...and my method of amplifying the mic is not good (guitar amp)...

denboy 07-05-2005 07:27 AM

Try not amplifying the mic, and just go direct in (if you can).. And then use cool edit pro to amplify it (using the dynamic processing effect, and choose "vocal compression").. This way it won't clip

Merkaba 07-05-2005 07:27 AM
Merkaba- You have what I meant, so no worries. :D How are things coming?
Ok...
things are...well....not coming. I havent really done anything lately. I'm going through a shift change at work...so now I work third shift and I'm not used to it and I'm having to readjust everything, sleep being one of them. All of this crap just makes me want to work harder to get a band going so i can end the nine to five, or in my case...6pm to 6am....dammit round here, in the country woods...its hard to find people though. I'll try to get some stuff done by the end of wednesday since I have that day off...the thing is I work tuesday so I'll get home at like 630 wednesday morning and probably sleep alot of the day. So maybe thursday. I'm so OCD ish when it comes to recording. When I start Its really hard for me to say "ok thats a good take". At least in my bedroom. I feel a bit better because I put my Mic in the walk-in closet so It helps my mental block that i get from the idea of being noisey. We'll see how it goes. I'm gonna try to record all of whats on Matter's site. I should be able to get the patient done first. If I can just relax in here I could get it all done. We'll see.
Hmm a double post : \

Anyways i had a free hosue today, I'm really struggling to get any type of reasonable vocal sound. This is the best i got, though the chorus just seems really distant. I really suck at this, If i could send someone the raw track and they could compress it and stop it clipping like a b!tch i would be eternally greatful...

here is is...

You have decent sound and the clipping could be fixed by not directly singing iinto the mic. Hold it about seven or eight inches from your cheek and it won't be able to catch the plosives. Trust me I probably have a crappier mic than you. Otherwise I think the only thing I didn't like was when you held the notes too long, pitchwise it was good and it had a Maynard quality to it.

Dr. Jake Destructo 07-05-2005 09:13 AM

Rounder- That breakdown/solo you guys did during Stinkfist was ace, man. I loved it. Do you think you could tab it out for me or something? It sounded perfect with the song.

Rob- !!!! Did you convert it all by your own self? If so, thank you oodles.

/hires expensive hooker for Rob

clearvision 07-05-2005 10:17 AM

I didn't tab it out if thats what you mean, it took 5mins to convert...

Anyways I had a breakthrough, I discovered that I can semi record with my mic, straight into my comp...however it only records though the right channel  So I'm like OK, i test the stuff, and it turns out it's the 1/4 --->phono adapter...so hen i go into town i purchase myself a new one, but the same thing happens when i listen to music through it, unless i fiddle with it. However when ir ecord i can't get it to come out of both channels...

Can it really be another fualt adapter? Or am i doing something wrong? help!?!

denboy 07-05-2005 10:21 AM

those 1/4 --> phono adaptors are always a bitch I've found.. The first couple I got did the same thing.. But the one I've gotten now have been working for the past 7 months without any problems (and it's the exact same one I bought every time).. But hey.. they only cost like 5 bucks or something, so I don't really care

clearvision 07-05-2005 10:24 AM

:( They suck...I buy a new one and it doesn't work...any idea how i would make it work???

denboy 07-05-2005 10:26 AM

Just jiggle it around untill it works? hehehe

clearvision 07-05-2005 10:33 AM

I could just record with my computer mic....this is majorly sucky :(

Part two of the OK concert, which is Lateralus, and D/R/T.

This is in DAT format too, so use Windows Media Player to play it.

Thank you thank you thank you.. Again.. hehe

And clearvision, even though it only records to the right speaker, you can just copy that to the left speaker too.... Your mic probably isn't a stereo mic anyway, so it'll sound the same

Doesn't work for me :'(

EDIT
Nevermind :D

Dr. Jake Destructo 07-05-2005 11:23 AM

Troll- Has your friend given you the bass yet!?!

Rob- I didn't think you did tab the entire thing... That would've taken ages. Either way, thank you much.

Adam Jones is GOD 07-05-2005 11:29 AM

He he, i've been told I get 2 weeks being home alone in August. Possiblities:

1) My sister has a bass (which she never plays), and a good friend has a bass amp he never uses. So I can teach myself bass in those weeks.

2) We have neighbours who play loud music one side, and a boyracer the other side who shows off his 'banging' system every other night. needless to say, i can make as much (guitar created noise) as I want.

3) With 2 weeks, I wont be going out a lot, and can avoid paying rent for 2 weeks, which means I can (finally) buy a soundcard, and get some sort of recording down. I've just upgraded every other aspect of my rig, so that has to be the next option.

4) Im sure you can think of other benefits of having a house to yourself.

So I might finally get some Tool recorded

Friik 07-05-2005 11:30 AM

i just heard your cover of 46 & 2 and there are a few thing you might want to change (wel, in my opinion):

a) the bass is a little to thin, you might want to add a little more bass to it, it sounds more like paul d'amour

b) i just didn't like the vocals in general, there a littke to high pitched and it seems like this guy is choking on the notes sometimes.

Well that's about it, besides that the drumming and guitar work is pretty good.

edit: oh and i'm a bassist, i could do some songs for you :D my brother has a wahmmy and delay so i could do songs from lateralus too.

That's not how it works.
You're allowed to come with critisism, even though you can't do it better.

Nope, he needs to hurry though, hes making me look bad on here.
Sorry.

clearvision 07-05-2005 11:49 AM

Other people crit my vocals plzkthx...atm all i have is moses not liking the way i hold the notes...

denboy 07-05-2005 11:54 AM
Other people crit my vocals plzkthx...atm all i have is moses not liking the way i hold the notes...
The reason I'm trying to help you get a descent recording of them is because I enjoyed them quite a bit ;).. You sing a different melody line than maynard, but that doesn't really matter much since it sounds good
I'm going to have to agree with this. The vocals were a great effort that I'm sure took some work, but they didn't really work for the song IMO.

On another note though, that might be the closest we will come to finding anyone who can do vocals even remotely like Maynard.

Edit: Well, forgetting the fact that I haven't heard clearvision's vocals until I get home.
What vocals have you heard?.. We've had atleast 4 people do vocal recordings..... .

clearvision 07-05-2005 11:57 AM

Ahh nice

I try to vary it a little bit, #1 because maynard sings some really hard to hit lines, and #2 straight covers are boring...if people have listened to the song loads and they hear it done a little differently, it should be a pleasant suprise...just need to sort this mother fugging adapter out.

Magicaltroll 07-05-2005 11:58 AM

Can you give me a link, I missed it I guess.

denboy 07-05-2005 11:58 AM

I agree.
Just don't hold that last note as long, it doesn't sound as good as it would without

http://s51.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=03W7VJ2XYADPF2S4DHG8TAPIQG

Yeah, some of the notes may be held on too long...
What vocals have you heard?.. We've had atleast 4 people do vocal recordings..... .
The 46&2 cover, which if I'm not mistaken was Moses.

Magicaltroll 07-05-2005 12:06 PM

The notes are held too long. But for the most part, you sound ALOT like maynard. And then some notes are really out of tune. Like badly. Maybe record another take of it.

Just being honest :)
