what is their prime 88-93ish???[/QUOTE] ya i don't know how true this is but i heard they've only ever played it live like 5 times which, if true, makes it pretty special to me. I'd say their prime was earlier but Dyers Eve never came out till 88. |

It's a way to voice your agreement with something someone says. People do it because you need to type a minimum of 3 characters before you can make a post. |

Being honest, what metallica songs can you guys play (james/kirks/lars/bass), versus how long you've been playing guitar? I've listed mine quite a few times now, but I want to know about other people just to relatively see what my skill level would be.

I think I just found out why I, along with countless other people, like Metallica so much. Please forgive my essay style writing, my thoughts turned out to be longer than I thought.
When I was 14, I had the general stereotype that metal was satanic or morally wrong at least. All these stereotypes came about from the sense that most drug dealers/criminals listen to heavy metal. After 14 years of hating Metallica, it surprised even me how much I got into them after the first time I heard MOP. I’d never gotten into any bands so fast, and as I soon found out, I wasn’t the only one. What was it that Metallica had that no other metal band had?? IMO, I think the reason is that Metallica’s songs were missing one key element that all other metal bands (in the 80’s anyway) shared, and that was (a) lyrics about Satan/sex, and (b)their own powerful lyrics. When you think about it, none of their songs deal with such things or praise them. Metallica’s songs were mainly written about government conspiracies/war/fantastical nightmares. Each song would deliver some powerful message dealing with ethics and emotion. These weren’t just any messages though. They were based on centuries of human understanding and thinking. Lots of Metallica songs use reference to some thought or idea dug deep out of the history of mankind (Blackened, Lepper Messiah, Sanitarium, For Whom the Bell Tolls). Not many people know it, but each song, along with some f*in good music, was very smart for a bunch of drunken idiots. This quality (of excluding Satan/sex from their lyrics) made them stand out. Of course later on they would switch to a more Tolkien-oriented-fantasy-adventure (Enter Sandman) with very little meaning. Even songs with no lyrics were based on something (Call of Ktulu, To Live is To Die). Some of the songs would not only depict a certain intellectual opinion WITH reasoning behind it (I find this rare, because most bands would just say what's on their mind very blatantly (like some posters in this forum) even if it doesn’t make sense). With a bit of exaggeration on my part, some songs would seem almost revolutionary (Disposable Soldiers, MOP). That is why Metallica gained so much popularity in the 80’s, because of the lyrics. The musicianship would be an added bonus along with awesome performance, but lyrics on songs from albums Kill ‘Em All-AJFA are just amazing for a drunken kid who was deemed as a ‘bad guy’ from society. The lyrics to songs like MOP and Fade to Black aren’t gonna come every other year. James, despite his bad-*** style cover, is a very intelligent man and knows his stuff. People don’t appreciate him for his lyrics enough, and this post is just 1% of my gratitude towards him for his awesome musical career, hopefully more to come. People have lost their respect so fast for Metallica with small issues like solos or downloading, and I think that’s a shame because there is so much more to judging Metallica than what they put on the outside. But what are your guy’s thoughts on this? I just thought of this in half an hour, this could actually turn into something worth knowing. *bibliography style* props to wikepedia for giving me some good information. **sorry for triple edits! |
