Sonata Arctica - My Selene
I have already heard a bunch of their songs, such as Full Moon, Wolf and Raven and Land of the Free, but I have somehow never been impressed by this band, and I'm a power metal fan. Their last album, Reckoning Night, received very good reviews and I wanted to check it out, so here are my thoughts about the 7th track of this album, the only one not written by the singer Tony Kakko. The song starts pretty quickly, well...not as much as Wolf and Raven does. Fast paced power metal drums with a somewhat slow keyboard melody, definetly a power metal sounding intro. After about 25 seconds comes in a short rythmic riff, nice and heavy. The first verse comes in and, as usual it seems, the entire vocal line is harmonized. I really like vocal harmonies, but I prefer when it is timed right rather than juste always present. Good melody, grows into some pre-chorus anouncing a faster riff to come, which is the chorus. The vocal harmony persists through the chorus as well. Nice melody again, power metalish to the bones, but I think that the vocals lack some energy. I prefer when power metal vocalists are pushing their voice with power and conviction (read Tobias Sammet or Daniel Heinman if you can't figure out what I mean). Another verse-chorus, pretty much the same, still good, not great. At the end of the second chorus there some kind of a bridge (not sure it is the right term), very interesting, best part so far. A guitar solo is up next. It sounds like the dude is going to throw some cheesy melody, but it quickly shifts down to a darker lead part, I like it. They then go back to the heavy palm muted riff they played at the begining and after the first chorus, this time along with the singer. No vocal harmony this time....oh wait...it's back again. Then comes the keyboard solo, very nice, shifting back to where the guitar solo started in terms of tonality, well done. The end of the solo is played by both the guitar and the keys, sounds good. They go back to the pre-chorus/chorus. They repeat the chorus one last time, one third higher, so the vocalist finaly pushes is voice a little, he sounds way better like this in my opinion. The harmonies are very rich in the last chorus, great work there. The last riff is very dark compared to the chorus, gives a nice change of feel in the end. I liked the song, some parts were very cool, promising for the rest of the album. I'll need to listen to at least one more song though to see if it is worth buying it. This is by no mean a power metal classic, not a great song I will listen to all day long, but it is worth staying in my random playlist. It is a lot more creative and original then the songs I had heard from them. The only thing that keeps me unattracted to this band is the singer. The perpetual vocal harmony gets a little boring and I think he lacks the balls power metal singer usually have. He's got a lot of potential and a very nice vocal tone. 7.5/10 This time I will suggest only two songs from a single band. It is an usigned band, friends of mine. They are currently recording their first pro quality demo. They play melodic rock, their most notable influences (maybe not on these particular songs) are Cold Play, Red Hot Chili Peppers and a bunch of Brit Pop bands. The first song was recorded live, but the sound quality is very good. From their official website (french website, english lyrics) : Blue Funk Disease - Le Poisson http://bluefunkdisease.com/demo/Poisson.mp3 The second one is a little heavier (not metal though) and emotive. Blue Funk Disease - Chorus http://s27.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=34NNWOOQI5PGD1MI7E4UUHH0AD Would be great if someone could review both ;) |

Blue Funk Disease - Chorus
I hand't really read you description of the band above. so I was excoecting some funk, of which I'm not too big a fan. but i got pleasantly surprised :) the song: starts of with some nice emotive guitaring. at 0:19 another guitar starts palying underneath. nice, this band is unsigned? weird, what I hear so far sound s really good. at 0:50 drums and vocals come in, do I hear any bass? I don't like the vocals, they remind me of /thinks meeh, can't remember, but they sound familair at 1:23 the instrumental part gets a bit more intersting. 1:55 this sounds great with the backing vocals. 2:25 a great interlude, wow, this is intense, reminds me of katatonia. 2:41 vocals back, it' sounds quite intense now, I really like it. this reminds me a bit of Creed and the Offspring. 3:12 another interlude, reminds me even more of katatonia and that effect is. a short vocal part, and once more I swear I'm listening to Katatonia. the vocals sound better than in the beginning, but are still a bit of a letdown for me. a little turning more towards screaming at the end. and the end :p wow. this sounded great except for the vocals, just not my thing. although there's nothing wrong technical-wise. but the rest soubds great, although I couldn't really recognize their influences as you stated. overal: 4/5 the vocals are the letdown, otherwise it would have scored higher. my picks: canvas Solaris - when solar winds collide (instrume(n)tal. no-man - together we're stranger (ambient soundscapes) pain of salvation - ending theme ( prog metal) enjoy |
If you can, try to upload the songs to http://www.yousendit.com so that they're easily avaliable to others.
the song: starts of with some nice emotive guitaring.
Actually, it's bass. That should answer to your "do I hear any bass" question. Thanks for the review, the guys will hear about it. Oh and, they have no idea who Katatonia is, but I agree it is similar in some points. |
ok, I'm doing this one
aw man, 11 mb... it'll take a while to get. still going to do it though, be patient |
I'm going to change my fl style. For too long I've done play by play reviews, without having as much focus on how I feel about the music. I will still keep both elements, but switch emphasis towards what I think of it, not what's actually happening.
Canvas Solaris is one band I've wanted to hear for a while now.. but I feel like softer music today No-Man - Together We're Stranger Ambient soundscapes sounds like something I might like, as long as it isn't too minimalist, random, or noise based. The 20 seconds of electronic buzz at the start made me wonder about the possibility of this being a noise based piece, but some very calm synth takes over by playing light melodies. Hammond organ sound takes over after a while playing some simple chords. It's very calm, and I really like it so far. It reminds me of the ambient parts in Anathema songs, in fact it could easily be them just stripped of the guitar, bass, drums and vocals. I got a surprise at 2:40, there actually are vocals in here, it's a guy singing sparsely, his voice sounds a bit breathy, with a little bit of a whine. 3:45 brings out some guitar too, softly strummed and sparse again. All is still so calm, and it sounds so much like the intro of Anathema - Emotional Winter. If you can imagine some really calm music to go with these photos, you've probably got something like this song. Vocals have long since stopped. Up until 7:20 there's some "lead" guitar - very, very nice, it fits the mood perfectly. The hammond organ chords sound more like high strings now. After that, it's a synth comedown, with some bubbly sounds, and a horn? Just before the track ends there's a power-up, I presume that goes into the next track. I know plenty of R+M people wouldn't like it because of the lack of activity... but I absolutely love it. It's so nice.. even if the vocals were a little bit whiny, and even if it sounded so much like Anathema, I'd still give it 11/10, or maybe even 11/9. __________________________ Anathema - Temporary Peace - soft ambient rock. music goes to about 5:40, waves to to 7:52, after that is bonus track territory Tension - Fantastic - nu metal/Mastodon-ish sound - http://www.tensionmusic.com/audio/fantastic.mp3 TISM (or maybe T.I.S.M.) - The Last Australian Guitar Hero - alt-pop-comedy, language warning Weddings Parties Anything - A Tale They Won't Believe - punkish sea-shanty about cannibalism. 7 mins Soundgarden - The Day I Tried To Live - slow hard rock with strange time sigs Down - Landing On The Mountains Of Meggido - haunting acoustic southern rock ATTN Bartender: (and anyone else interested) {Miocene} - The Fall - experimental electronic/technical heavy rock/_______ ____ http://www.xtaster.co.uk/mioscene.mp3 |

{Miocene} - The Fall
I have had the pleasure of hearing about half of Cellular Memory and crave more. Begins with what sounds like it could be a rap beat. Then the cool guitar comes in. Doesn't seem to be quite following the time signature. Sounds cool though. And a synth is swelling. Then vocals with a new, simpler but cool guitar part. Too much delay on the vocals for my taste. Then the song picks up but because of the mixing doesn't really. I know it's supposed to but it doesn't. Then a quiet bit with light drums and mostly vocals. I really like the vocals here. This song reminds me a bit of Gordian Knot... but with vocals. I'm liking the vocals more. A little overly distorted. There's a cool sort of guitar solo that is just two long held notes. Sounds good though. The vocal production pisses me off. A cooler guitar solo follows a Maynard-esque scream that's mixed too low. Then some cool drum work and some more very Tool sounding stuff. This is all very Tool like but more technical guitar work and too many vocal effects. I really like the dynamic changes. I have to go but In the end it leaves a much better impression. 8.5/10 Borknagar - The WInterway DEP - Sugar coated sour |

Borknagar - The Winterway 7:51 Intro, a fade in synth, or is it guitars tremelo picked? at 0:12, acoustic guitars come in with strumming, and most probrably a second guitar doing some scaling. The background "synths" continue. 0:42, strummings get louder, 0:44, tom rolls (drums come in). After that, the song picks up, with distortion, vocals, bass coming in at one time. A background lead can be heard. The clean vocals are quite nice, 1:08, he starts screeching. Much tremelo picking can be heard at the background, while the drums do some tom rolls, 1:33, you can hear the song building up, more bassy trem picking, some licks 1:51, apparently the song did not build up, but the intensity dropped a little to make way for melody. The synths, pianos and guitars really fit together well here, esp 2:12-2:27. The additional tom rolls make it more interesting. 2:27, the clean vocals are back again, and then it starts to screech again. 3:30, the song slows down.. 3:38, "rythmn guitar solo", nice riff, before building up to blastbeats and the modern black metal sound. 4:29, acoustic guitars return. 4:42, vocals do the "ooooahh" thing. heh. riffs and some musical part continues. 5:54, the song changes, and harmonized clean vocals enter. These are better than the previous mentioned. Then it screeches again. it builds up and at the end, there are various solos and lead parts by the piano/guitar. the song ends with a clean vocal singing "??? winterway....." and the distortion fading away, and you can hear a heavily chorused feedback. Don't talk about leads in this song ,they are all over the place, guitar leads, acoustic leads, synth leads, piano leads, random drum rolls. Only thing the build up can be more drastic and falling more drastic, but borknagar did a good job on this one. 7.5/10 Recommendations Eternal Tears Of Sorrow - Bride Of The Crimson Sea (symphonic black with elements of power, or you could say a way better CoF)strongly recommended Dark Lunacy - Fragile Carress (Symphonic Death Metal) Angel Dust - Bleed (Thrash/power) |

Eternal Tears Of Sorrow - Bride Of The Crimson Sea
Starts of with some amazing piano work. At 0:14 bass and a bit of guitar comes in. At 0:25 the sound becomes a bit more wild. But this sounds more like a rock song than as BM song. Till the vocals come in at 0:55. I like them, and a 1:20 clean vox ,nice!!! The piano is still playing underneath. The overaal sound of the song isn’t very BMlike, just very intense rock. I love how the guitar plays very emotive (solo-worthy parts) but still vocals on top of that. 2:43 a short interlude. Very emotive once more. 3:10, a solo, nice, very nice. 4:04 solo ends, and vocals come in, but this sounds very Rammstein like. 4:32 the more growling like vocals, this sounds better IMO. 4:56 keys come back in, and the sog slows down. At the end, there is some weird fast drumbeats, of which I think is a transition into the next song. Wow, this was great. Not the cliché wound I was excpecting, this was… just great 5/5 I see why you were especially recommending this one :) My picks: Canvas solaris – when solar winds collide (instrume(n)tal. I have this song in a yousendit file, somewhere on page 59 Sleepy time gorilla museum – sleep is wrong (avant garde black metal like) (don’t really know) I’ll upload this one up too if I remember enjoy EDIT: sleepy time gorilla museum: http://s31.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=2MI7H0H80Z1D00Y57MPNCHOSOT |
