minor threat- "salad days" is a great song.
|
Any Bones Brigade fans?
|
ME. I'm a huge fan. I saw them with a bunch of punk bands earlier in the summer. They are great live too.
|
7 Seconds and Kill Your Idols are coming out with new CDs this fall. You guys probably no that already though...
|
Bones Brigade are awesome. I love the sound they get from the bass.
|
 I just downloaded some Kids Like Us and they are fucking amazing.
|
tattoos of knuckles and knived but never swing a fist in a f'ucking fist fight
That is why they are amazing. |
Hey, I'm writing this genre misconception article for this e-zine. I'm going to delve into the hardcore sub-genres like tough guy, Boston, NYHC, Straight Edge, and Posi. If anyone wants to help me out with said genres - things you've noticed about that particular genre, bands, etc. - it would be greatly appreciated, I'll give credit. A few of you guys are way better at the straight-up stuff then I am. *looks in Shane, ALLP and Sys' directions. And I know there's a couple other guys*
I'm also talking about the misconceptions behind metalcore and screamo, but I got that pretty much covered unless any of you want to make sure I cover something specific. |
Straight edge bands tend to ether be tough guy/militant or a posi band.
Posi usually encompases edge. NYHC tends to have more punk in the music. |

I'm also talking about the misconceptions behind metalcore and screamo, but I got that pretty much covered unless any of you want to make sure I cover something specific.
Straight edge bands tend to be in your face (musically and lyrically). Bands like Embrace Today, Casey Jones, Stand And Fight, Until The End, and so on show this in their music. Pounding riffs and drums with generic yet moving lyrics that are form the heart (in my opinion, others may say different). But then there are posi bands who also spread the edge like Chain Of Strength, Stay Gold, Good Clean Fun, and Time Flies. Notice that these bands take more of an old school approach musically. Straight edge hardcore is pretty hard to define because of these differences. I dunno a lot about NYHC besides Judge, Madball, Most Precious Blood, and a few others I can't name off the top of my head. I think someone else whos more educated on it should explain it, I'm sure my explanation would be nothing but flaw. And as for Boston Hardcore, the sound takes more of an influence from the old school bands. Some Kind Of Hate, In My Eyes, Blood For Blood, Reach The Sky, and so on aren't blasting your ears full of open chords in drop D. It's hardcore in it's purest form. I think that's what the Boston scene is about for the most part. Hahaha, my futile attempt to analyze the subjects. |
please correct me if i'm wrong:
NYHC has more of a metallic sound... it's a bit slower and "tough-guy" influenced. it seems to not really incorporate "posi" lyrics and is more about ****ing people up-- madball, most precious blood, and even terror (though not from NYC) follow the NYHC style. Posi seems to have started in the late eighties and early nineties with bands like Youth of Today, Gorilla Biscuits, Uniform Choice, ten yard fight, floorpunch, etc... Mid-nineties-now, bands like Champion, Good Clean Fun, Comeback Kid, The Promise, Bane, Stand and Fight, Stretch Arm Strong, Diehard Youth, etc. i can't really differentiate between posi, youth crew, and straight edge... they all seem to be basically the same thing: fast, in your face, less breakdowns, finger pointing, pile ons, etc. Question/Topic of Discussion: Can a band be posi but not straight edge? |

Straight Edge bands have a lot of variety too, there's a lot of difference between Earth Crisis and something like In My Eyes. There's the toughguy militant straight edge stuff on one side, and the posi/youthcrew on the other, with some bands falling in the middle also. I'm not sure how to describe NYHC, but NYHC bands are definitely similar. What's the e-zine called? |

the militant stuff is definitely seen in bands like Earth Crisis and Throwdown (not from boston and not very good either). |
the militant stuff is definitely seen in bands like Earth Crisis and Throwdown (not from boston and not very good either).
Suprisingly enough, Throwdown are a posi band...more so in the Keith era.
Suprisingly enough, Throwdown are a posi band...more so in the Keith era.
They did a split with Good Clean Fun..I kid you not |
I know this, I have it. Their Jingle Bell Rock cover sucked balls. The other song was pretty good though.
|
Can someone define posi?
|
Can someone define posi?
Positive hardcore, started by bands like Gorilla Buiscits and 7 Seconds. Also known as youth crew.
|
Positive lyrics I'm assuming?
|
Postive thinking, kind of self explainitory.
|
Ok, thanks.
|
If every form of hardcore is welcome in this thread also New York Hardcore belongs in here.
Some NYHC bands: Madball, Sick of it All, Agnostic Front, ... Could anyone fill this list up?
i can add a band that no one has mentioned...SHUTDOWN |
widzjnent you forgot Cro-Mags..the most influential NYHC band ever.
|
what would Figure Four and First Blood be considered hardcore or metalcore?
I think Figure Four is hardcore and First Blood is in between |
Figure Four are borderline. First Blood just really heavy hardcore.
Thanks a lot guys! I'll give credit to whomever I use information from. I'm going to need everyone's names (You don't have to give last unless you want to) then. As for the e-zine: Haha, I actually forgot what it's called. It's this kid from New Zealand and he just started it up. He's mainly covering the softer stuff so he saw me on here and asked me if I wanted to cover the harder end of the spectrum. It's a pretty small operation but he said it's pulling in 1,000 hits a day. |
Cro-Mags are sick/
|
no one answered my question from before: can a band be posi but not straight edge??
Shane, did you mention GB and 7 Seconds? Those bands are great. I actually just read a GCF interview yesterday in which Issa says GB is their biggest influence... it's pretty easy to tell. |
Okay, I first heard Walls Of Jericho a year or two ago and disliked them. I listened to All Hail The Dead last night and I love it. Wow, I love it alot.
|
Walls Of Jericho are very good. The female singer gives quite an impressive scream. I like "There's No I In Fuck You" and "A Little Piece Of Me."

Isn't Walls Of Jericho a metal band? |
Isn't Walls Of Jericho a metal band?
Metalcore
She's hot, I want to do her.
The picture I saw she looked ugly. I'll try to find it. |
The picture I saw she looked ugly. I'll try to find it.
The old pictures of her are ugly, but the promo ones and the picture in the AHTD e-card were hot.

Oooo. I gotta see these. Here's the one I saw.
http://www.trustkill.com/bands/bios/wallsofjericho.php Also, I see Bleeding Through is on tour with Death By Stereo and that you can order the new It Dies Today and RosesAreRed together for $20. |
