hello......i'm kinda new here and saw this. Thought I would put my 2 cents in.

I got into classic rock when my marching band did a Styx show with the works. Mr. Roboto, Come Sail Away, Too much time on my hands, and rockin' the paridise. I have been hooked ever since. something about it just brought the real me out and i have tried to find cds and tabs like for that stuff ever since. I like ac/dc 2. can't play it yet but i'm getting there.... someday.

lol........if anybody from Lawrence County High School is reading this you know me as "the trumpet chic" or "Mindy"

Eh stix, I really cannot say I like them.

And i really don't see how you (rock not roll) find king crimson cheesy, it's never something i thought i'd hear someone say about them.

(i'm not trying to argue with you guys, I'm just throwing in my opinion)

Badmoon 06-19-2004 11:31 AM

^IT's understandable though. They are progressive, and in that role, there is going to be some boring moments.

I understand that it's not some people's cup of tea, but i definitely would not call it cheesy, boring and cheesy are two differemt things.

metalmania13 06-19-2004 03:04 PM

how can anyone hate Queen?

BludgeonySteve 06-19-2004 03:04 PM

I'm just more of a hard rock and blues person than a progressive person.

metalmania13 06-19-2004 03:05 PM

mexicanfloydian 06-19-2004 03:36 PM

Queen is one of the best bands ever. It is a shame mercury died.
I wish i was born earlier enough to get to see them live.

s0ldsoul4roknrol 06-19-2004 09:34 PM

These are some bands that I listen to:
AC/DC
Led Zeppelin
Van Halen
Alice Cooper
The Who
The Beatles
Metallica
Ozzy
Black Sabbath

Kingadamx 06-19-2004 09:43 PM
And of course there are more hugely popular Classic Rock bands that should be known forever. Like, The Who (My favorite). They make music like no other. Each member was fabulous, all craftman. Or The Grateful Dead, who defined a generation, and started a long line of San Fransico bands. Or Crosby, Stills Nash, and Young. Who in many ways were the American, more talented Beatles. They had it all. For most Classic rock listens, that band is usually over looked, and The Grateful Dead.

I recomend all Classic Rock listeners to listen to these lesser known Classic Rock bands

Buffalo Springfield, The Byrds, The Hollies, Blind Faith, Big Bro and Holding Company, The Mother of Invention, The Lovin' Spoonful, ect. There is just to much to name.
Thank God someone else in this forum listens to the Mothers of Invention. Thank you Badmoon you have mentioned almost all of my favorite bands.

Kingadamx 06-19-2004 09:45 PM

Does anyone else in this forum besides badmoon listen to Frank Zappa cause I'm a fan I'm just curious?

clown_phobia 06-19-2004 09:55 PM

what exactly is the definition of "classic rock"?

On The Edge 06-19-2004 09:59 PM

Frank Zappa is genius, Kinga

"Dont eat the yellow snow" sums it up :O

Out of curiosity, since im a big kiss fan, what genre did he say they were in?

StreetlightRock 06-19-2004 10:05 PM

Hmm.... Well, its more of a style of playing. you can ususally tell from the 'sound' and tone of band. Its like rock with a dash of blues. It can be quite broad usually, from soft vocals like Pink Floyd (The extreme soft of Classic rock... sort of) to the hard rock of GnR (extreme edge of 'classic rock'). A majority of the music dosnt use powerchords like other metal and modren rock bands and such. (yea, yea, Smoke on the water...) Its hard to explain. Its called classic because alot of bands that fit into this genere are quite old. there are exceptions tho, eg/ The Thrills, The Darkness... even though aot will argue they arnt classic rock, they tend to try to fit into that mould. Examples of 'pure CR bands/people include': Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Jimi Hendrix, Lynard Skynard, The Allman Brothers Band.

DVG.

Edit: KISS are Classic.

magicbus 06-19-2004 10:08 PM

that makes sense with the blues influence. thats what most of "classic rock" is built on, and it probably what distinguishes it from today's music. i think that's pretty important in the definition of classic rock.

Wouldn't we still consider a band like AC/DC classic rock even though they have no blues infulence?

Badmoon 06-19-2004 10:29 PM

Plenty of bands aren't really based around Blues. The Who, other than the begining, largly disbanded from the genre. The Grateful Dead, when they do Blues, that's it, because when they aren't, they are doing a genre not even close to it. And basically most of Psychedelia.

I would say glam but then that defines the style rather than the music

RockAndRoll 06-20-2004 10:41 AM
I'm just more of a hard rock and blues person than a progressive person.
That's understandable

I don't really know how to define classic rock....

Although rock was originally based on blues lots of it moved away from that. One thing that generally holds true is that you can usually pick out sounds better than in lots (but not all) of today's rock music where they may have the guitar playing in the chorus but it's not a real melody or anything, it just sort of creates a wall of sound to back up the vocals. Alot of it sounds more raw in the prudction and stuff, but not all if you consider glam rock bands classic rock. I don't know, to me classic rock encompasses less than many other people on these boards think. For me it's a lot of groups out of the 60's who had something to say, and were a big part of that whole movement. As well as many of the bands into the 70's that may not have had as much to say but followed similar musical styles and were less commercialised although some people will debate this.

Oh ya

Anyways...
Got a copy of the clapton CD "Me and Mr. Johnson" I love it, expecially the way it was produced, very raw sound. It sounds old. It's got some upbeat swinging songs which are really cool. And ofcourse al the musician's who pay on it are absolutely top notch. It was all around very wel done, from the production, to the album cover to Claptons' litte blurb on the inside about johnson's music.

BludgeonySteve 06-21-2004 05:21 PM

^Sounds good. I don't have that one :(. But i'll download some songs from it and then see if I need it. Eric Clapton is my hero (one of them anyway).
