bruce can't do sanctuary nearly as well as paul did (IMO)
ill give Paul that, Sanctuary really is a vocal harmony bult for Paul...but the majority of older songs done by Bruce (like Wrathchild and Running Free for instance) i enjoy alot better. Bringing a new singer to sing another vocalsits style is always difficult, and i belive Bruce does Paul's songs wonderfully with a hint of his own style as well.

Holy Smoke solo

Does anybody know how Janick Gers plays the first part of the Holy Smoke Solo, its mental and mindboggling hve a listen and try and work it out. i think it may involve tapping and mutibg or somthing like that but its weird yet still abso-bloody-lutely quality

Jacharias P 05-30-2004 07:09 PM

p.s. does anybody know were i can find the tabs for that solo as i can only find the tabs for, the legend, Dave Murray's (awesome) solo which is after Janicks. that and the tabs for the rest of the song but no janicks solo

trills on some frets, dont know which, while sliding the edge of your hand down the strings, just lightly touching them. you get the trilling sound, and a sliding harmonic over the top. then he switches to a lower string.
dont know what you call this technique though, he uses it on about 3 or 4 songs, cant think which others he uses it in off the top of my head though, one on x factor i think.

about whoever was talking about janicks live solos, i prefer adrian live, his solos are usually almost perfect to the studio one. janick usually just improvises most of the solos, and they usually sound worse and nothing like the studio one. they are sometimes better though, like brave new world on RiR with the added pinch harmonic. daves solos dont sound like on the albums always, but he's been playing them like that for years, like the trooper which he's played the way he does now for years.

about the backing vocals, a lot of the time its just adrian. on songs like Aces high and the trooper, i dont think steve could go that high. plus if youve ever heard him when the others stop singing on Iron maiden and other songs he does do backing vocals on, he isnt the best singer in the band, probably just beats nicko.
if you can get them, theres some bootlegs of adrian singing at an 'entire population of hackney' concert, which was him on vocals and guitar, nicko on drums, and some other people, who did a few gigs. some of their songs (like reach out and that girl) became maiden b-sides for SiT (and Juanita on 7th son i think). his singing live on those isnt as good as on the studio version of reach out though.

hey look. Bumpage.

Photophobic 06-01-2004 03:57 AM

Oh yeah, I know what I was gonna ask you lot.
Which live version of Fear of the Dark do you prefer?
The one on Edward the Great, or the one on Best of the Beast (which I believe is Rock in Rio)?

madthumbs 06-01-2004 03:58 AM

^ prefer the one on Best Of The Beast, i love that version, but both versions are pretty rad.

Photophobic 06-01-2004 04:02 AM

Yeah. I'm still undecided. But I love the intro to the one where he just screams FEAR OF THE DARK! and pronounces every word so clearly. Very affective.

The best of the beast one isn't rock in rio. I think it was recorded at the ishallen in helsinki.

Photophobic 06-01-2004 04:20 AM

hmmm no you're right. Edward the Great has Rock in Rio. Thanks.

DimebagDarrell 06-01-2004 05:36 AM

my band and i want to do an iron maiden cover but alot of em have quite difficult solo :upset: so i want a kind of easy solo doesnt really matter about that vocals my singer can reach quite high. we were thinking of out of the silent planet. any other suggestions

GurS 06-01-2004 07:52 AM

your drummer has to be bloody good for out of the silent planet - there's the galloping triplets on the bass drum, but it needs opening hi-hats,s o you can't use a double bass drum pedal.

i suggest running free. the "solo" is fast but easy providing the pick fast. and it's got a rocking drum beat. BumbaBOOM-babumbaBOOMBOOM bumbaBOOM-babumbaBOOMBOOM

etc.

Jacharias P 06-01-2004 08:45 AM

Does any one know where to find a good tab for janicks solo in Holy smoke. Please

Jondur 06-01-2004 08:56 AM

Best version of Fear of the Dark is Live at Donington in 92. Sent shivers down my spine (might have been the rain!) and still does when I listen to the CD.

GurS 06-01-2004 10:13 AM

i say that's the best live album, but fotd ain't to hot on that one. i'm gonna say the released live version (from real live/dead one)

The Clansman...secrets 06-01-2004 06:00 PM

The best version was at Rock in Rio. It just was that good. As for the inquiry for the easy solo, try Powerslave. It's fairly easy.

Jacharias P 06-02-2004 04:41 AM

What do you people think is the best Iron Maiden solo there is from any guitarist? Powerslave has an awesome solo as does Flight of Icarus and... the list could be pretty long but what's yours

p.s Does anybody know where to locate a descent tab for the first solo (performed by Janick) in Holy Smoke please. as i still need one and i'm still looking. cheers

btoto 06-02-2004 07:42 AM

best maiden solo is Aces High !

best solo live is The Trooper

The Clansman...secrets 06-02-2004 02:02 PM

Well, like I said, Powerslave along with Aces High. If you wanna talk live, then go for The Clansman...yeah.

GurS 06-02-2004 02:03 PM

best solo = adrian's one in NOTB. and adrian's one in powerslave. and the 4-guitar solo-ish break before and after the solo in Flash Of The Blade. mmm.

btoto 06-02-2004 02:13 PM

^I bet you've never listened to Aces High

FrailandBedazzled1979 06-02-2004 02:16 PM

Adrian- Wickerman, Wasted Years, The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner.
Davey- Clairvoyant, Burning Ambition, Rainmaker.
Janick- Wasting Love, Ghost of the Navigator, Mother Russia.

GurS 06-02-2004 02:17 PM

mother russia is a funny song. he he. dance of the tsars indeed.

GurS 06-02-2004 02:19 PM
^I bet you've never listened to Aces High
yeh. course i haven't. and that's why 2 of the songs i mentioned are off'f powerslave 0_o

I was a huge Maiden fan.

Funny though.. I recall being sorely dissapointed when I read in an old Creem magazine that Paul Dianno was leaving the band.. and Bruce Dickerson was taking over.. Man I feel old..

Anyways, I have long loved Maiden, but I admit I love the Dianno stuff more than the Dickerson stuff. I dunno. I just thought Dianno's voice fit the original scheme of the band.

Of course, I would be proven wrong with the following releases, up to Powerslave. After that, it got played. But they are talented song writers, and Steve Harris continues to be an inpsiration.

I saw Iron Maiden on the Piece of Mind and Powerslave tours, and I also had the pleasure to see Paul Dianno's Battleground.. though they didn't play any Maiden tunes..
Either way, when I was a kid, I did Maiden jackets. I dunno if anyone remembers that either. It was cool to have a jeans jacket, with painted backs. I still have mine.. It was the cover of the European single release for Number of the Beast. Eddie was standing menacingly, with strings coming from his fingers, and each string hung down to seemingly control a little demon guy.. Like Eddie was the puppet master or something.. Was very cool.

I loved Maiden for their great lyrics, and great songs. I haven't purchased an album since Powerslave though, as I did buy the album after, but I recall being very dissapointed with it.

argh... i wish i was 17 at that time....

Photophobic 06-02-2004 04:09 PM

I found myself wishing I had just been getting into metal when the Black Album came out earlier. I wish I could have seen Maiden on the Brave New World Tour. But that was sadly too long ago :P

DBoons Ghost 06-02-2004 04:15 PM
argh... i wish i was 17 at that time....
I wasn't 17 bro.. I was like 12 when Dianno left Maiden. I was listening to Motley Crue and Twisted Sister too. But you didn't hear me say that.. I was mostly a punk, not a metal head.. but who didn't love Maiden?

I had an older brother who loved music, and took me to concerts all the time. I was 12 or 13 when I saw Maiden for the first time, and when I saw the Powerslave tour, I was blown away by the opening band.. Queensryche! They were on the Warning tour..

Anyways you guys suck! You all make me feel old. Where is Superdan when I need him?

Lateralias 06-02-2004 07:21 PM

My favorite maiden solo's are the ones on Hallowed be thy Name and Powerslave

What is your favorite maiden song everyone? For me its The Trooper, Bruce sounds awesome and the guitars are great on that song too, especially the solo.
