Hmmmm. Downloaded track 1 - The root of all evil, off edonkey, didn't recognise, but I haven't listened to much of 6DOIT or FII. It's not the best, reminds me of Train of Thought.
I think this is the first line of the chorus if anyone recognises it.
'Crucify, resistorfy, kill the pain that twists inside...'

lil chris 04-12-2005 10:03 AM

Just researched and the Octavarium songs on p2p's are from LaBries solo album. :(
has anyone learned YTSE jam yet?
I can play up to the solo(bass) I could probably play it but i havent been bothered to learn it yet, and most of the tabs for it are pretty bad, although i havent downloaded the powertab yet...

wow, im gonna have to play through it again, i forget where that bass solo is. Hey if you find good tab, could you send it too me. Those trem picking runs for the most part suck, and i would LOVE to have better tab.

I play then like hes playing, 32nd notes, but i suck at figuring it out.

shamed-angel 04-12-2005 11:01 AM

WHat do you guys reckon is JM's hardest Bass solo?
I reckon The Dance of Eternity solo is probably the hardest to nail.
The Metropolis solo took me about 4 solid hours to figure out. Real hard.

bassist-bmxer 04-12-2005 12:19 PM

The Dance of Eternity probably closely followed but ytse jam.

I hope in the new album we will see more creative basslines, because on TOT i thought he held back quite a bit and played alot of just root notes.

Prince of Darkness 04-12-2005 12:43 PM

I think ToT was really a crap peice of work. I would like the new album to actuallly have some Dream Theater on it. ToT wasn't DT. ToT was Nu-Metal. Are they Nu-Metal to stay? Where's that ProgMetal band I fell in love with? Dissapointment...

Train of Thought was so far from 'nu metal' it wasn't funny.

Nu metal bands do not shift time signatures fifty million times like they do in "This Dying Soul". Nu metal bands do not have mind blowing solos, found on every song except "Vacant". Nu metal bands do not go from crushing riffage to great melodies like they do.

Anyone who seriously thinks ToT isn't still progressive metal should be shot.

Prince of Darkness 04-12-2005 01:06 PM

fine. But I hate that album and It should be burnt. Every @#@!!$%?%#!!@@!?!#$%?!!@$!#$!?!#$@! copy.

But with Petrucci's 7string....he wants to go to the NuMetal side......

You're an idiot.

Petrucci is one of a few guitarists who can actually use every single string on a 7 string guitar. Playing a 7 string guitar does not make you nu-metal

And he only used the 7 string on "This Dying Soul". All the rest of the songs were done on his 6

As I Am, Honor Thy Father, In The Name of God - C Standard
Endless Sacrifice - D Standard
Stream of Consciousness - OMG STANDARD TUNING.
This Dying Soul - 7 String Standard

You can hate the album all you want, but calling it something it's not is pure ignorance.

Prince of Darkness 04-12-2005 01:09 PM

oh and The Beginning part of Honor Thy Father. If you tell me that sounds like DT, You too should be shot. twice.

(oh...The JoZ has sooooo much more posts than me.....maybe I should just get me coat...)

Anything Dream Theater writes sounds like Dream Theater.

No, you don't have to 'get your coat' because of my post count, but you might want to consider it cause you're being an ignorant douche.

Prince of Darkness 04-12-2005 02:19 PM

I considered. But really, DT in 1993-1999 was soooooo much better and more proggish than now. They're going for a much heavier image and they cant handle it. Ive said this before and Ill say it again. ProgMetal, or just Music in general is losing class. The Only great band I listen to founded in the New Mellenium, is Mars Volta. They have this style that suits their music. DT had a certain style that suited their music and Metallica had one too. But They all loose this style to the innevitable death of classy music. my point tonight is that style is important in music. It is the factor that decides what kind of music your band will produce.

Sorry The JoZ. For all my miss strikes with NU METAL. But I have to show people that music is slowly fading to crap. IMO.

The JoZ 04-12-2005 02:21 PM

But they aren't any less prog than before. They are still making epic-length songs, still doing great solos, etc etc.

Again, just because it sounds different, doesn't make it something it's not.

Dream Theater has evolved as the times have changed. If they kept making the same music they made back in 1992, their fan base would be considerably smaller at this point in time.

Sorry, I'm a stickler for that stuff.

PoD - Well, that's a really stupid opinion.

Not only that, but it would be very boring. Change is a good thing, and I think It's retarded when a band changes their sound, and fans say something like "they're going nu metal now", or "they're selling out". Yes, sometimes they are selling out, but very rarely. Usually it's just people who can't deal with change.

Also, I don't see what's wrong with Petrucci using a 7 string. He's one of the few players who uses it as it should be used, not so you can get your guitars to go even lower. For example: Korn.

Yes, but, Why change so much into the part where you know its crap, but you're(reffering to DT) so cocky that you dont realise it. The last good album they made was Awake. from there and on. Uninspired prog Metal. They were so high up in the cloulds with their new Train of Thought album, they they didn't even realise that it sucked. They even cut their nice long metal hair to"stay with the times" but like Metallica, they made a mistake.Turning into something they're not. I know I know. They have to change to satisfy the fans. But I can tell you, no fan of Metal would like short hair and clean shaves with running shoes topped off by crap music that doesn't suit them.
They even cut their nice long metal hair to"stay with the times"
For the second time in three days - :amaze:

By the way, both JLB and JM still have long hair, thankyou. And JP cut his on the 6DOIT album.

Prince of Darkness 04-12-2005 02:40 PM

Why cut hair in a metal band??? look at Rudess! CLEAN SHAVE. LaBrie and Mjung left their hair because they knew. petrucci should've taken the hint.

bassist-bmxer 04-12-2005 02:40 PM

What has their hair got to do with anything anyway? :p

I actually really like TOT.

Oh Come on, can you honestly say Scenes From a Memory was "unispired prog metal?" That album is pure brillance, has a great concept, and just overall very well done.
They were so high up in the cloulds with their new Train of Thought album, they they didn't even realise that it sucked. They even cut their nice long metal hair to"stay with the times" but like Metallica, they made a mistake.
They are noe middle aged men with kids. They can't stay young forever. Cutting your hair is not "staying with the times."
Turning into something they're not. I know I know. They have to change to satisfy the fans. But I can tell you, no fan of Metal would like short hair and clean shaves with running shoes topped off by crap music that doesn't suit them.
Change is not a bad thing. A band shouldn't feel they should keep an identity by staying with the same music for 20 years. I would rather a band change their style every two or so albums. It keeps it fresh, and iteresting. Honestly, I agree that The older Dream Theater was better, but saying they aren't who they are is stupid. People change, and bands change their music style.

Prince of Darkness 04-12-2005 02:42 PM

THanks for the nice ol' debate JoZ, but Im leaving now.

No hard Feelings i hope.
Why cut hair in a metal band??? look at Rudess! CLEAN SHAVE. LaBrie and Mjung left their hair because they knew. petrucci should've taken the hint.
How sad, I think this is simply a thing about image. From my understanding, you're not supposed to care about image.

Prince of Darkness 04-12-2005 02:48 PM

Im back, just got the post. DT changed, yes. But I know I keep going back to the fashion in music, but it has an effect on how your music pops out. If you had short hair in the '80's '90's period, you would not have survived as a metal band. So everyone had their long hair and scruffy looks. Great. But obviously this has to change with time. So the image got tighter and more clean. Like John Petrucci. But you dont make your image cleaner and your music heavier.thats just wrong IMO.

I guess Im still stuck in the '70-early'90's style. cant blame me right?

RiceMonster 04-12-2005 02:53 PM

You should be shot if you think image plays an important role in music. Music is something we hear, it is a sound. It has nothing to do with what we see. Yes Prince of Darkness, you are stuck in the 80's, and really you should move on. There are plenty of new good bands. It's just a matter of checking out the under ground.

Mister_Che 04-12-2005 02:54 PM
I guess Im still stuck in the '70-early'90's style. cant blame me right?
Perhaps not, but still hair length/clothes/penis size doesn't determine how well you play your genre or what defines you.

isp_of_doom 04-13-2005 04:39 AM

Just wondering if anyone knows what the weird background sound is during the intro buildup, with just a single guitar (before the sitar downstroke).

It sounds as if it could be a very heavily edited voice....anyne know for sure?

thanks.

as for contributing to the discussion at hand. who cares about hair? Even if the band had the worst image ever Id still listen to them, because i find them interesting and they expand my skills as a drummer.
