Wanna trade parents? :upset:

Well I've got my first Opeth album--Still Life--and I'm quite impressed with it. The acoustic passages are quite good and the vocalists clean vocals are chilling. I don't know if I'm overly fond of the death metally growling vocals though. Maybe I'll get used to them.

Cardboard Headgear 01-10-2005 12:22 AM

Oh, you will, trust me.
To whoever liked the piano part at the end of Leper Affinity: listen to Silhouette.
silhouette is awesome

Check out Patterns In the Ivy I as well, it's got a nice short piano part that goes along with the acoustic guitar perfectly.

Im learning godheads lament, and in the powertab I have for it (which had 5 stars btw) there are 3 guitar parts at some points. It sounds right when I listen to them, so did opeth have 3 guitarists for Still Life or something? And how do they perform it live?

ArcLite 01-10-2005 03:23 AM

A lot of their songs have three guitar parts, quite a few on BWP. No they never had three guitarists, one of them (Mikael most likely) just overdubber the third part. As far as live, I'd guess they just leave out the third part, which is usually just additional harmonizing.

Yeah, do you mean the parts with the E-bow on guitar... they throw that eerie noise in here and there.... if that's the third guitar part, then I know what you're talking about.

I believe Steven Wilson (From Porcupine Tree) contributes some guitar parts. As well as some vocal parts (Bleak), and the piano in "Patterns in the Ivy" (I think)

I know your right about the piano and vocals, but I can't confirm/deny him adding guitar.

I'm just going off of the inside cover of BWP, which lists Steven under additional musicians as "Steven Wilson - Voice, Guitar, Piano"

ArcLite 01-12-2005 06:47 AM

Ah, I'd like to know what songs he played on. I'm I can find it on the web somewhere.

I havn't heard Orchid yet, and frankly I dont want to. I found the quality on Morningrise to be discrasefull , so I dont want to even know what it sounds like on orchid.

/me is not troll. me is great Opeth fan. me has all the albums (cd). me is powerfull

weird

I consider morningrise as their best release ever.

although the vocals are a bit crappy, true

Mikeal has grown so much (vocal wise) over the years

they should re-record morningrise, with his improved vocals it would be even more awesome than it is now

The Flabbit Rides High 01-12-2005 01:22 PM

that would be awesome!

Im not saying Orchid and Morningrise are bad records!, but listening to them just fills me with dissapointment that i just cant listen to it and feel inlightend!

/IMO

naboo 01-12-2005 02:37 PM

^ Those two enlighten me the most of all their albums. Their actually could be my favorite two albums of all time.

naboo 01-12-2005 02:44 PM

Orchid: Forest of October
Morningrise: Black Rose Immortal
My Arms, Your Hearse: When
Still Life: Godhead's Lament
Blackwater Park: Bleak
Deliverance: Deliverance
****ation: In My Time of Need

Still Life through ****ation favorites change often though.

Iron Man 01-12-2005 02:51 PM

Oh, I forgot about the favorite songs thing...so hard to choose

Orchid: The Twilight is My Robe
Morningrise: To Bid You Farewell
My Arms, Your Hearse: Haven't bought this one yet, so I cannot say
Still Life: Between Godhead's Lament and Face of Melinda
Blackwater Park: Bleak
Deliverance: Master's Apprentices
****ation: Hope Leaves

opeth_oasis 01-13-2005 01:33 AM

have any of you realized how hard it would be to play and sing to wreath? I think thats why they never play it live.

ArcLite 01-13-2005 01:34 AM

I think that about a lot of their songs. I bet when he's writing some songs he's like "yeah, we'll never play this live."

Grey Incision 01-13-2005 03:30 AM

especially godhead's lament, but they do it, so that's insane.

and to Flabbit

orchids rules, it is different to morningrise, do not judge orchids by morningrise, morningrise isn't that great, but orchids is fairly arse-kicking

check it out mate

opeth_oasis 01-13-2005 03:34 AM

orchid is great, twilight is my robe is the full deal, good bass, good guitar riffs and solos and a fairly good percussion line. Its probably Opeth's blackest album, but definately one of their best.

agreed, the solos in twilight are my favourite, to me, they have the most emotion out of any Opeth solo, just fantastic, and so epic/beautiful
