Anathema - Are You There?
The beginning of this song is very atmospheric, sounds like it could be Pink Floyd. Piano. There are soft female vocals in the background. Then the male comes in with soft-sung vocals. Very nice song so far. Could go to sleep to it. Guitar-echo sounds in the background. Sounds like there is some record studio effects. The guitar comes in with a clean riff and then the bass and drums come in. Very slow, smooth beat. Some echoing of the snare hit going on, again with the studio effects. Very faint chorus oohs and aahs. He starts singing. ****, this song is so friggen' mellow. While I listen to this song, I keep seeing a movie where there is a girl drowning and there is a guy in a boat frantically trying to save her and its all in slow motion? Around the 3:05 mark the drums does some crash cymbals and everything is suddenly gone, and we're back to that eerie, atmostpheric attitude at the beginning with the oohs and aahs. Overall, the song was so **** mellow. I almost fell asleep listening to it. Very good song though. 8.5/10 _________________________________________________________________ Angra - Acid Rain Carcass - Keep On Rotting In The Free World Cradle Of Filth - Nymphetamine [Fix] |

Cradle Of Filth - Nymphetamine
First off, cool name of a song. I've heard some CoF before and they're not so bad. Chessy, but alright. The song begins with a chorus singing a mior meoldy and then guitar and synth and drums come in. There are swells int he back too. A female voice comes in. The tambre of her voice is a little strange but sounds alright. More like Gothic Metal here especially when the male voice comes in. It's like over effected black metal vocals. I like the production. The song is a bit repetitve and I wish the drumming were more technical. Just as I say this it is stepped up a bit and the melody changes and the double bass pedal comes in. I prefer the second melody. It focuses more on the mans vocals and the strings in that section are cool. The outro is like 80's pop. The song is a bit corny but I liked it. It assures me that CoF are not Black Metal but more of a goth pop group with occasional black metal vocals. 7/10 for repetition Neurosis - Locust Star Meshuggah - Future Breed machine Dillinger Escape Plan - Panasonic Youth Radiohead - Planet Telex Stabbing Westward - The Thing I Hate Cryptopsy - Crown of Horns |

Neurosis - Locust Star
Starts out with a droning/fading in intro. About 25 seconds in the drums start up and there is a clean electric guitar riff played. Some wierd noises are going on in the background here... I think another guitar and vocals with effects. Pretty cool overall effect. Quiets down around 1:11 and starts back up with a scream. The guitar goes into overdrive. A melodic riff is played. The vocals are yelling but still understandable. There is a much deeper backup voice behind the lead vocalist. The guitar riffs all flow together nicely. The song is kind of a slower one. Pretty good guitar tones and pretty good production. It seems a slight bit repetitive to me. I don't really like the vocals all that much but I like that they're understandable for the most part. Overall I thought this was a decent song, not really my type of music though. I'd give it a 6/10. ________________ Arsis - Looking to Nothing Vital Remains - Immortal Crusade Marduk - Cloven Hoof Symphony X - The Turning Mnemic - Deathbox Amorphis - Black Winter Day |

Arsis - Looking To Nothing (3:22)
This song starts out with some sweet double bass and the guitars come in. It sounds really rough cut. A pretty sweet riff, while the drummer's smashing away. Ohhh I really like the vocals. ****. Nice screamed vocals, he's quite the good screamer. Then there is a sweet little shred lick and it goes into a harmonized guitar part. I could really get into this band. His vocals are amazing, I love them. After the harmonized guitar part the drummer does a sweet double bass rhythm, and then there is sort of a reprise section where its just guitars, but before you know it, the drums are right back in it. At the moment I'm thinking about getting some more from this band. 8/10 _________________________________________________________________ Dio - Don't Talk To Strangers (4:54) Kalmah - Heroes To Us (5:10) Nevermore - Narcosynthesis (5:30) Pick whatever one you want; I just put them in alphabetical order. |

On a different note, dibs.

I chose this song because it has a cool name. Actually, I'd heard the other two already, but I would've gone for this one anyway, because of the cool name.
Nevermore - Nacrosynthesis - 5:15 Starts off very nicely, pounding drums (but not continuously pounding), and then slips into some chugging guitar. Vocals come in, and at first they seemes less than impressive. I'm quickly changing to quite liking them, though, apart from the occasional stupid effect. Little mini-solo thing after the first chorus (which includes the ultra-cool word). Another quick verse, and the whole thing slows down, with some good, slower riffing. The guy has a very melodramatic way of singing, I think, but it's surprisingly good to listen to. The only thing I object to is that the structure of the song just seems to keep repeating itself. Around 3:30, a solo starts, slow at first, and now it's building up to something really cool. I like it, especially more so than solos which just seem to bear no relation to the song they come from. This one did, which is good. Another solo around 5:00, shorter this time; though it reminds me a bit too closely of the last one, it's still good. A quick burst of medium-paced riffing, and the song ends. 8/10 That was a good, solid metal song. I get the feeling that if I listened to more than one song like that though, it would get fairly annoying fairly fast, so I hope not all their songs sound similar. Manowar - Battle Hymn - Battle Hymns
Heavy Metal Approx. running time = 7:00mins. http://www.metal-archives.com/images/83_photo.jpg - just so everyone gets a good idea of them the song starts off with a very sombre clean guitar intro which is joined by chord/drum stabs and violins at 10 secs. It all creates a very emotional intro. A rit. occurs at 35 secs before a drum fill enters at 50.. this fill starts of meticulosly slow and build up untill the whole song starts kicking off at !;00. The whole thing has a kinda waltz feel and is still accompanied by the strings. The vocals join but they seem a bit off to me. This whole section continues unabaited for a while untill we reach the chants of "Kill! kill!" and dodgy backing vocals before going back into the waltzy section. Actually listening to te lyrics and remembering the name of the song, I discover that it has a whole battle/war theme to it :p We proceed back to the chants, this time of "victory! Victory!", in the normal fashion and at the end of them we are met with a breakdown. clean guitar eneters witha descending chromatic riff which is joined by soft vocals. This is then joined by a choir and gives the feel of a lulably before another drum fill takes us back to the waltzy section and a guitar solo kicks in. The tone isn't the best and the playing is pretty good. A good mix of technical and melodic playing. back to the "kill! kill!" section before a build up and back to a very emotional waltzy section. A breakdown appears with the drums going [british]bloody mental[/british] and feedback of the guitar variety, Eventually the drums stop and you have the final long drawn out chord. over this comes ascending vocals and we have finished. overal about 7/10. It was cheesy and the music was good. Didn't particularly enjoy the vocals but other than that it was good. Artist: GRAND MAGUS
Song Title: Summer Solstice Running TIme: 3:58 -Blues Influenced/Rock/Metal- Intro: Heavy, Distorted Guitar Riff comes into play. Drummer plays light hits on the hi-hats and Heavy Crash Cymbal Hits for a pretty sweet effect. All in all, the Intro makes you want to hear more of the song. 0:14 - A slight fill by the drummer, is the starting point for the lead guitarist to come in. The combination of the two really shows the good muscianship of the band, and really does, rock. Good solid song so far. 0:32 - The vocals come in. The singer has a deep, growly voice but is a clear, understandable singer. If you prefer higher vocals, than this song if not for you. But, keep listening. 1:03 - A nice, solid snare drum fill comes in, and the chorus begins. This part i really like, when the singer shouts: "Fire, Magic, he will find a piece of mind." Still, in the backround the Rhythm guitarist is doing a nice job. 1:21 - The Lead Guitarist comes in with a nice solo, that starts off kind of slow then speeds up as it progresses. This solo tops off what i think is a very powerful chorus. 1:37 - Verse II begins. 2:08 - Another Snare Fill kicks off the Chorus. Very Nice. 2:25 - A simple, catchy Snare-Bass beat on the drummers part. Then, at 2:30, another solo. I like this one a lot better than the first, because its more melodic. Solo is still going strong, when a familiar drum fill starts off the chorus again. 3:00 - Chorus 3:30 - I like the mixing of both the Chorus and the Lead guitarist shredding. Very nice work. 3:49 - The Song comes to a close, with the lyrics: "Fire, Magic. Fire, Magic." Song ends at 3 minutes, 58 seconds. As a classic rock lover, i was skeptical of reviewing this song, for fear of it being to heavy metal-ish or just not good. I was wrong. While listening to it. I was awed. The solo's are amazing, they truly are. And The more and more i listened to the singer, his style and voice grew on me. Pros: -You really should check out the lead guitarist. I liked his style of playing, and of course, his solo's were pretty good stuff. -Good solid Rhythm guitar work -Solid drums, not too complicated though. Cons: - I wish the song were longer, it kind of just ended. - Lyrics were a little repetitive. 9/10: good stuff all around ReccomendationS: Kansas - Carry on my wayword son Fugazi - Little Debbie |
