That's a rather interesting tuning. I think I need to pull out the acoustic now.

madthumbs 03-29-2011 06:03 AM

yeh nice major 7 sound, F A C G C E cool aswell

gaslight 03-29-2011 07:24 AM
Tuning is D A B F# A E

Trying to write some lyrics and construct the songs better before I sing them. But yeah i mess around.
That is an interesting tuning, open strings make a major chord with the 2 and 6 added on for colour, pretty tasty easy-shape strumming possibilities. Might give that a pop sometime.
Not quite.

Up until 2001 (IIRC), MIM Jazz basses had the same sized neck and bridge pickups. Because the poles don't line up as well with the strings on the bridge pickup (hence the reason it's supposed to be a larger size), and because the bridge pickup was wound to the same DC resistance as the neck pickup, output is slightly lessened near the bridge. Changing pickup height can accommodate for this enough to make the issue moot.

The issue with hum (60Hz/50Hz hum) is prevalent among all single coils, and with both pickups on full + a good shielding job (a "must" in any bass, btw), the hum is completely eliminated. The pickups act as a humbucker when they are on full.
dude said it was not any hum really, so we'll see if he is honest or not, but i may be like "wat" and ask for halp from u guys
Yeah man, 275 is a pretty solid price. congrats.
thankx bro

FunkMetalBass 03-30-2011 10:56 AM

Man, my Gotoh Res-o-Lite tuners wont be shipped from Japan until April 12. I can't wait that long!

Also, should I add a series/parallel switch to my 8-string? gogogo

fatbandit 03-30-2011 01:13 PM

no. less controls the better.

FunkMetalBass 03-30-2011 01:47 PM

Well, it's currently set up with:

Volume - Volume - Hi Mid/Low Mid - Bass/Treble - Active/Passive(tone), so the "simplicity" factor is already out the window.

fatbandit 03-30-2011 03:43 PM

rip it all out and wire direct from pickup to output jack.

BenJammin 03-30-2011 06:33 PM
rip it all out and wire direct from pickup to output jack.
this

fatbandit 03-30-2011 06:39 PM

Like.

gaslight 03-30-2011 08:29 PM

If you want to add a series/parallel switch I'm afraid you'll have to remove up to 4 of those strings.

FunkMetalBass 03-31-2011 12:27 AM
rip it all out and wire direct from pickup to output jack.
But then how would I turn my volume down when my guitarists tell me to stop because I'm wanking?
If you want to add a series/parallel switch I'm afraid you'll have to remove up to 4 of those strings.
Technically, zero is "up to 4", so I think I'll go with that option.

gaslight 03-31-2011 02:31 AM

Oh, very clever :p.

You should have a Dr Octopus sticker on your bass. Is that the Spiderman guy?

The Transporter 03-31-2011 12:51 PM

pic of my two guitars and new old jazz bass in guitar forums thread

fatbandit 03-31-2011 06:33 PM

woa. that shit is ananas.

Aaron 03-31-2011 07:38 PM

A N A N A... wait a second.

FunkMetalBass 03-31-2011 10:50 PM

British people are weird. They can't even say anana.

gaslight 03-31-2011 11:49 PM

That's strange.

I bet if you called them Ananas in an English speaking country you could double the price and people would think it was some kind of exotic version.

FunkMetalBass 04-01-2011 12:27 AM

Now I wonder if "pine tree" or "apple" are even remotely close.

fatbandit 04-02-2011 10:41 AM

Can't get my amp's DI to record guys :( Sat trying to make it work at home for silent recording through my amp's valve pre, but nothing's coming through except my noise floor. Any ideas? :/ All the leads work, the amp is on... I don't get it.

FunkMetalBass 04-02-2011 04:07 PM

Does it work if you DI through something other than your amp?

fatbandit 04-03-2011 07:07 AM

yup.

gaslight 04-03-2011 07:21 AM

Is it supposed to be able to do that?

Maybe the DI is wired after the power section or the DI is affected by the Master volume control.

Maybe none of that is possible or ever happens, I'm not really the guy to know.

:(

Oh - try it with the volume up and everything normal, see if the DI works then. That'll narrow some possibilities down.

fatbandit 04-03-2011 12:30 PM

Yeah I tried it with the volume up too, I'm stumped :/

FunkMetalBass 04-03-2011 02:23 PM

Is there no special switching or dedicated DI volume control?

fatbandit 04-03-2011 05:43 PM

yup, DI volume knob. even on full, i was only getting the amp's noise floor. but if i turned the master up, sound was getting to my speakers :s

FunkMetalBass 04-03-2011 06:19 PM

Have you tried unplugging the cable going to your cab? It could be that your amp doesn't allow for a DI signal if the cab is connected.

gaslight 04-03-2011 07:22 PM

Can't it be bad to run a head without a cab connected?

I'm pretty sure I'm not meant to do that with mine.

funkyhoney 04-03-2011 11:45 PM
Have you tried unplugging the cable going to your cab? It could be that your amp doesn't allow for a DI signal if the cab is connected.
That sounds like a ridiculous notion.

gaslight 04-03-2011 11:47 PM

It would be a touch inconvenient.

fatbandit 04-04-2011 10:39 AM

If it was a solid state amp, I probably would have been doing it with no cab from the outset. But I'm not running a valve head with no load on it. Nuh uh.

FunkMetalBass 04-04-2011 10:50 AM

Oh yeah, I forgot that your head wasn't SS. Is it all tube, or just a tube preamp?

fatbandit 04-04-2011 11:11 AM

all valve :/

FunkMetalBass 04-04-2011 12:04 PM

You should join Talkbass and go throw the question into the amp forum. Those guys are way more knowledgeable about amps than I am.

fatbandit 04-04-2011 12:51 PM

Or buy a new amp ^_^ Hah.

FunkMetalBass 04-04-2011 01:18 PM

I thought you absolutely loved your Matamp?

fatbandit 04-04-2011 01:36 PM

I doooooooooooooooooooooooo.

Might buy another.

gaslight 04-04-2011 08:17 PM

Why don't you e-mail Matamp and ask them what's up?

fatbandit 04-05-2011 11:57 AM

Gonna have a play with it again and see what's what first :)
