That's fine, from 3:30 to about 4:20 I was just going to do some whammy stuff softly. And from 4:20 to 4:50 I'm still a little unsure, so I have to work that out.

Moses 07-03-2005 08:13 PM
If we loop it, how would it create atmosphere? We could try both ways, but I think that if we do 2 phrases of it, it'll be good.

/has not seen Parabol/a
Good point.

I still wanna do the whole thing but if everyone else thinks it's unnecessary/tedious, I'd rather have less worries/fuss about it.

Dr. Jake Destructo 07-03-2005 08:13 PM

If you can't figure out how Justin does it, just kind of improv it. Improv is encouraged. :)

Unless it sounds bad

/Imagines himself scatting Ticks and Leeches.

Dr. Jake Destructo 07-03-2005 08:18 PM

Duh, that's a given. :p

I can't improv worth a can of beans, so I'll just stick to the tab for 90% of the song. The other 10%, You will find me muting strings or playing open D chords. :notcool:

Ha. :p

/figures out that the second 46 & 2 chorus is harder than the first.

EDIT: Much harder.

ThePatient 07-03-2005 08:25 PM

Ok, nevermind, the soft part isn't bad, that was just me not paying attention to the song and the tab when I ran through it a couple days ago. It'll still be me "interpreting" the whammy part though. :p

And it didn't dawn on me until now that I have driving school everyday this week, and band practice almost everyday after it, so I'm going to be home very little and I don't know when I'll get a good chance to sit down and record. So I might have to wait until the weekend to do it.

Moses 07-03-2005 08:27 PM

Ha, now I'm on the heavy part of the bridge and that's even harder than the second chorus.

Dr. Jake Destructo 07-03-2005 08:32 PM

Patient- No problem. Any time after that may start becoming one though, as we will be really pushing up against the deadline.

ThePatient 07-03-2005 08:38 PM

Alright, I can't see me not having it done by the end of the week, but I just wanted to get that out there in case something comes up.
Is there anyway you can use cool edit/another program to stop the vocals from biting...I know when i look at Joz's tracks his files don't clip at all and take up the whole thingy (very unspecific but i think you'll know what i mean).
what do you mean biting? are you talking about digital clipping? if your clipping you need to turn the initial input down until you get the loudest levels without going into the red ( 0db ) on your digital recorder. if you cant monitor while recording then do test takes and check the wav file. The thing about vocals is they are so dynamic, that you are going to get a wav file with a lot of peaks and valleys, whereas joz's bass is more of a consistent sound and it shows in the wav file. You can smooth out the wav file (and the sound) by adding some (a little) compression, which will help smooth out the volume, but you dont want a vocals that has been compressed to the point that the whisper is as loud as the yell becuase you lose dynamics.

anyway digital clipping is bad bad bad. And if you mix it down with other parts it really stands out. If by biting your just talking about the yells being too loud and the quiet being too quiet, add some vocal compression to help smooth it out.

edit: also its really important to know when to be close to the mic and when to stand back, as well as to try to be consistent. also, if your getting a lot of pops, go get an embroidery ring (ask your mom) and some stockings and make a pop filter (cost: free to 2 bucks depending on whether you have to buy the stuff.) this will eliminate your plosives (like the letter P) when recording.

ThePatient 07-03-2005 09:28 PM

Pretty good, I like it. Who's doing the singing in T&L?

Lateralias 07-03-2005 09:29 PM

46&2 is tough stuff on vocals.. wow! Kudos on doing pretty good with it Moses.. some parts were iffy and you sounded like the cookie monster near the end  but like I said I can tell it is VERY difficult. Good work man. :thumb:

Moses 07-03-2005 09:30 PM

I'll record for Ticks and Leeches but I'll be using a different technique for the screaming.

Oh, and thanks to everyone that said I did good.

I might rerecord the end.

Kage 07-03-2005 09:35 PM

Nice job on the vocals, Moses. I really dig the way you sang it.

Moses 07-03-2005 09:36 PM

Thanks again.

Sliptallica- I :(@smiley posts

Sorry to be a nazi, guys, but this thread has been getting a bit more spammy than it should be. I know we're all anxious for more Tool news, but that doesn't mean we can just piss our lives away in this thread waiting and spamming. :p

91% on the download, btw.

Moses 07-03-2005 09:57 PM

It's weird because usually I can scream for a good amount of time and not feel anything but this one took alot outta me, even though those weren't that harsh.
