SUNN O))) is proud to present their 7th studio album, after 10 years of existence, entitled Monoliths & Dimensions. The album showcases the core guitar duo - Stephen O'Malley and Greg Anderson - incorporating influences from a plethora of guest musicians, bringing the SUNN O))) sound to epic new levels. The band also collaborated with composer Eyvind Kang (notable for his work with John Zorn, Marc Ribot, Bill Frisell, etc.) on various acoustic ensembles, in addition to the Helios fueled electric guitars and basses. Key players on the album include Australian guitar genius Oren Ambarchi, enigmatic Hungarian vocalist Attila Csihar (Mayhem, Tormentor, etc.) and slow music godfather Dylan Carlson (Earth), as well as Julian Priester (worked with Sun Ra in the 50s, John Coltrane's African Brass band, and Herbie Hancock's Sextant band) and new-music horn player Stuart Dempster. There's also an upright bass trio, French & English horns, harp & flute duo, piano, brass, reed & strings ensembles, and a Viennese woman's choir led by Persian vocal savant Jessika Kenney.
pretty cool interview |
Downloading the new Nadja album. It's a covers album with:
‘Only Shallow’ (My Bloody Valentine) ‘Pea’ (Codeine) ‘No Cure for the Lonely’ (Swans) ‘Dead Skin Mask’ (Slayer) ‘The Sun Always Shines on TV’ (A-Ha) ‘Needle in the Hay’ (Elliott Smith) ‘Long Dark Twenties’ (Kids in the Hall) ‘Faith’ (The Cure) |
It's a great album. The Swans and Codeine covers are great.
|
Sick, can't wait to hear it.
I'm so jelaous. I've never been to a doom gig :( Glad that you had fun.
It's amazing how alivethe doom scene is in Europe. We have two doom only festivals in the Netherlands whichare also very much worth any doom fans time.
i havent been to one either. one day...one day. maybe there will be a show during the summer while im traveling around Europe
Pretty big chance. Especially in scandinavia.
the show sounds like it was awesome the2stranger, i wouldn't have missed any of the bands, particularly mourning beloveth, but that's just me
Yeah, I had to snack at a certain point and al in all, they were my least favorite. They put on a nice show though, for the 10 inutes I still saw them. :p
just a month til the new sunnO))) record drops. that **** will be unbelieveable. even the album description is unbelieveable.
That sounds nice. Oren Ambarchi and Atilla, nice nice. The other instruments sound sweet too. I'm looking forward to it. |

i never rlly got into drone
what would be a good start to if i did? |
If you want to try some dark stuff Sunn O))) is the most obvious band to start on.
Another good one to start with Khanate (also with O'Malley from Sunn O))) ) For Sunn start with Black One, Khanate --> s/t If you want to start with some lighter drone Nadja is the way to go, start with Body Cage. Also EARTH, if you're looking for some light drone, EARH 2 is a good way to start. |
I'd Say start with Nadja and Earth. Once you get into both bands, listen to Sunn.
|
It sucks that there are so few good drone bands.
Most of the time you're stuck with the more famous ones, or you get the sucky ones. |
Tbh, the most famous ones are the best in that genre.
I prefer listening to pure Drone music though, not Drone Metal, I've discovered that I like about 4 or 5 Drone Metal bands but I love a looot of Drone artists like Basinski, Ambarchi, Andrew Chalk etc. way more. |
The Dead Texan is one of my fav. (non metal). But Earth is probably my fav. drone band. Hibernaculum and TBMHITLS are awesome.
|
New Nadja album is awesome.
|
My favorite Drone project overall is Nadja and William Basinski, can't decide between both of them. In Metal, probably Sunn O))).
|
Everything by Aidan Baker kicks ***. In metal yeah Sunn O))). I've listened to some other blackmetal/ambient/drone bands but they aren't that good tbh. Khanate is OK however, noise/drone-wise.
Have you heard Loscil Txus? |
Tbh, the most famous ones are the best in that genre.
That's sadly true for the biggest part. Although there are still some undiscovered gems! My favorite's are Nadja and Oren Ambarchi. |
Khanate are okay-ish, pretty boring tbh.
And no, I've never heard Loscil. Worth getting? You should listen to some William Basinski, probably my favorite musician. |
Well I quite enjoy it when I'm resting. It sounds like The Dead Texan and Bass Communion. I think it's worth getting. If you enjoy them get The Dead Texan and Goldmund if you don't already have them.
Hmm we forgot about Jesu. It's sort of drone/doom isn't it? |
Jesu are more Industrial-ish imo.
The Dead Texan are great, never heard Goldmund either though. |
Jesu is pretty sweet as well.
I can't listen too long to him though. |
Goldmund is great, always sends me into deep thoughts :). Definitely check them out.
http://www.myspace.com/goldmundmusic If you like them get Corduroy Road. |
the new bass communion, molotov & haze, is sickkk
|
Is that a Steven WIlson project, or am I mistaken?
|
Yep. I just have I and II. Will get the latest one.
