Today I woke up and put on Morningrise while it was snowing, it was really cool. It really seemed to fit in well with the music.
I know this has probably been done here before, but what is your least favorite Opeth "epic" song? "Epic" as in not including the short instrumentals.

I would say The Grand Conjuration. Whereas other Opeth songs like Dirge or SPD just don't do that much for me, they're still very pleasant and not bad or anything. But TGC is what worries me about Opeth's newest direction. It seems so prepackaged for MTV2 and all the mainstream metal scene, it's really sad. Plus, they repeat the main riff too much and overall it's way too simple and boring.
Probably (Not including Orchid, because I'm still not entirely sure where this album stands alongside the others) Blackwater Park. I actually don't like the song all that much, oddly. Even though some riffs are cool, overall I just havn't really gotten into it.

Blackwater Park is a weird album for me; I think it contains some of Opeth's very best songs, and some of Opeths very most mediocre or flawed.

Opeth songs i'm the least fond of would be the last two or three "epic" songs off Blackwater Park. Though they are decent songs in places.

Agreed. That's a big part of why it's not quite in the running for best Opeth album for me. It has some fantastic songs but some parts (basically from somewhere in the middle of Drapery through TFP) that are downright mediocre.

It's my favorite Opeth album. I don't consider any of the songs on there mediocre...

I dunno, Dirge For November seems really dull to me, TDF kind of gets blah towards the middle/end, and Funeral Portrait is cool but doesn't really stick out.

The other albums that would be in the running for best in my book are Still Life and Morningrise, and neither of those really have any parts that are weak or dull. Blackwater Park has some of Opeth's best ever songs on it, but it isn't as consistent.

Morningrise has too much amaturish songwriting on it for me. I think they just tried to hard for all epic songs. Still Life is my second favorite though.

I don't understand all the Dirge hate, it starts off with one of Opeth's most beautiful acoustic selections and then goes into an insane riff with some of the best growls on the album.

Right. One of my favorites on the album.

Oh Morningrise definitely has amateurish songwriting, but I still love it and there's barely any part of the album that I don't like.

TojesDolan 02-12-2006 01:38 PM

I realize that Deliverance isn't badly written, (the album, I mean) but seems to be the least metaphorical.

Blackwater Park is the most complex, metaphorical album of the whole pack.

ok lateralus 02-12-2006 02:03 PM

I love Deliverance, but it is a little boring in comparison to BWP or Still Life- not very colorful if you know what I mean. Its a fantastic album, just doesn't have as much atmosphere as most Opeth.

Shattered_Future 02-12-2006 03:27 PM

Least favorite song...probably The Drapery Falls. It takes a ridiculously long time to start, and doesn't do much for me.

Mine to, that last growled verse is incredible IMO, such power and emotion. Rivaled only by the last 2 lines in Blackwater Park. :thumb:

ok lateralus 02-12-2006 03:34 PM

Yeah, The Drapery Falls is a classic. The D minor to C acoustic part at the end is so amazing

Darkness 02-12-2006 04:06 PM

I believe Mikeal called that "the easiest riff ever". :p But yeah, still sounds really nice.

ok lateralus 02-12-2006 04:22 PM

Yeah, it is simple, but it's so unexpected that it's awesome

TojesDolan 02-12-2006 04:51 PM

hmm... The drapery falls takes too much to begin, but indeed, it's a beautiful song.

Among the songs I dislike, I guess... I'm not too fond of the funeral portrait. And sometimes "the baying of the hounds" isn't my favorite song.

Crysiss 02-12-2006 05:44 PM

The only song i dont like is (Reverie harlequin forest. Very boring IMO

Another song that doesn't quite do it for me is The Night And The Silent Water.
hmm... The drapery falls takes too much to begin, but indeed, it's a beautiful song.
Yea, first time i heard it, it was taking a helluva long time to get me into it, but it gets progressively better over a few minutes. I like that old school riff with the power chords n all.

Toaster 02-12-2006 06:52 PM

The Drapery Falls is great. The only problem I have with it is that the intro is the best part of the song.

I think my least favourite would be A Fair Judgement. It has some nice sounding parts, but it's the only Opeth song I don't feel like listening to once I put it on.

Stormrider 02-12-2006 07:08 PM

I'm not that much into A Fair Judement either...

^Dream~Theater^ 02-12-2006 07:12 PM

I actually love Dirge, Spd and Tdf. I've been listening to In mist she was standing quite a bit lately, What's your guy's thoughts and opinions on that? I think it's a brilliant song but thats just me.

Stormrider 02-12-2006 07:13 PM

In Mist She Was Standing is a Brilliant song.

The first I heard from Orchid though was The Twilight is my Robe. Which is another very good song. Sadly, their the only 2 I know from the album...But this hasnt stopped me of wanting the album badly.

I love In Mist She Was Standing. It's a great song to play along to, not to mention the lyrics give me chills. I especially like the ending acoustic riff before the outro, some good music.

I'd rather not say. Someone has been going on my account and ruined everything for me. First, my brother went on and posted some crap to ruin my rep, but I think someone else actually hacked it last night. It's all good, I've been on MX for a couple years, post count means nothing to me. :)

But now I'm all curious :upset:
