Oh my days!

Well, just got back from day 1 of recording the band's album in our grotty little rehearsal space now complete with lots of boards, blankets, sleeping bags and what not to make a half decent drum room'bat cave.

a much more cost effective, and fun, way to record. it's surprising the results you can achieve too. that last demo of ours that's up on the facebook page was recorded in me own modest home studio.

what shit are you using in way of DAW?

Sad But True 01-10-2012 11:25 AM

Well Reaper for DAW, I really like the interface, it just seems really intuitive. And then just a collection of VSTs and stuff I've collected over the years.

Sound pretty fun already and we're just doing basic live tracks to get tempos, structures and whatnot. My drummer's kit records really well although I'm looking to improve the kickdrum sound, I really need to borrow that 421 off my mate to get some nice click on it.

I'll take some vids n shit next time I'm up.

check out that motherhubbard for recording drums. worked a treat for us and gives you a great sound.

not used reaper but tbh i think they're all much of a muchness. i've used cubase studio in my gaff and found it cool. keep it simple and you can't go wrong. got logic all loaded up on the mac but i've still not got round to trying it!

Sad But True 01-12-2012 12:38 PM

Hmm, thats an interesting use of the second overhead. Did you do that? How did it work out?

we did it exactly as it said, got the tape measure out and everything, worked out surprisingly well!

have a listen:

The demo's are on the "my band" tab on the left hand side.:thumb:

spirit 01-12-2012 05:11 PM

no apostrophe in "demos".

interesting overhead placement indeed, though when recording a stripped down kit i've managed with 3 mics and a homemade sub-kick.

sm57 on the snare, cheap dynamic on the bass drum, which was actually a 16" floor tom, rode nt1-a as the overhead and aforementioned sub-kick.

your recordings sound very natural, baz.

guitarbaz 01-12-2012 05:18 PM

cheers :)

tried to keep it as simple as possible and it all went through an old soundtracs topaz desk before the motu and into cubase. same as what the stones used in their mobile studio, to get the most of the pre amps. the guitars, bass and organ all went through the various valve amps we use live, mic'd up with 57's. keeps it as real as possible :)

The_Mop 01-15-2012 08:42 PM

Sup guys.

So yeah - I decided to go legit and buy myself a copy of Cubase with an educational discount. Also got komplete elements - 39 quid for some top class instruments. Obviously not the biggest range of shit but it's ace.

In short - expect some recordings soon :P

How is everyone?

guitarbaz 01-16-2012 07:52 AM

Go legality.

That the full cubase or studio?

I'm spiffing ta. you?

The_Mop 01-16-2012 03:24 PM

It's Cubase 6 'Artist'. They've kinda changed their price modelling a bit I think. Now they have Cubase, Cubase Artist and Cubase Elements. The last time I looked into buying cubase, which I believe was version 5 - the prices between cubase and artist were waayyy too similar, even with educational discount the artist version was going for just under 200 quid, full on cubase was about 220 IIRC.

Now they've changed it round a bit and the prices are a little fairer. I managed to pick up cubase artist, with educational discount, for 118. Got myself a korg nano control surface for 50 quid, and komplete elements for 38 (not 39 like I just said..derp).

This is kinda a plan to get back into music - I've been concentrating ridiculously hard on my course, no more than these past few months when I was on placement. Had a real hard time getting my work done and had literally no time for music. But yeah, trying to get back into recording and writing and all that.
