How does it mean they sold out? They played metal for over 20 years and im sure they finally wanted to try something new. Make them sellouts? No, It just shows they wanted to try something else than what they have been playing for the last decade. Put yourselves in their shoes. After 20+ years of playing the same songs, You would want to try something new as well.
Did you used to be a Mod back in the day?
Why yes.. Yes I was.

Long time ago in a land far far away.

I asked to be demodded around 2003 when my daughter was born if you must know.

Aren't I such a troll now?

Sorry for asking, I was just sure I could remember you modding way back then.
Well, thanks for taking the time out from this to answer :)
I hate when people use pwn or own to describe something. It's so f*cking moronic I want to puke.

If you would like to talk with the big boys, leave the f*cking AOL chat lingo at the door because as soon as I see "pwn" or "own" I immediately see a drooling retard hunched over him mommy's PC chatting with his intarweb dood's on AIM.

Which means you don't know jack. So.. please.. Let's use big boy words ok?
Rasta Rocker 01-11-2005 06:33 PM

cant we all just agree that metallica ****ing owns?
i think most of us can agree the old stuff is way lot better than the newer stuff, but its still metallica

No. That's not the point of the thread, though it's by far and away what it is most used for.

Huber 01-11-2005 06:37 PM

Okay, let's all shut up and listen to MoP. I'm over it.

ThrashMaster27 01-11-2005 06:38 PM

You do realise that repeating the word 'pwn' over and over again and saying someones intelligence is low is quite petulant and of all things, hypocritical, don't you? No? didn't think so. As for Mr. Old School, I can understand you point on the whole thing and especially on people using stupid lingo, which is one of the main reasons I steer clear of the pit. I don't get your bashing of them live though, when I saw them most of the songs were from the Kill 'Em All to Metallica era. Not one song from Load or Re-Load were heard.

Anyway, as far as I'm concerned Metallica aren't worth a penny these days and sold copies of St. Anger solely on their name. But, the fact is, they released 4 quality Metal albums in the 80's and that's what brought them to fame. Fame they don't deserve perhaps, but that's irrelevant. Anyway, there's my '2 cents' as you Americans would call it.

The point of the "pwn"s was to make him puke.

Rasta Rocker 01-11-2005 06:43 PM

yes, id live in a Uhaul truck to make it big

ThrashMaster27 01-11-2005 06:55 PM
Did you see them live in the 80s?
I wish. Perhaps when I'm finished on this time machine I'll head on back to the Bay Area in 1982 and catch 'em live. I wasn't comparing them live now, to how they were in the 80's, cause that'd be impossible due to me only seeing footage from back then. I was just wondering how they don't live upto standards these days, as when I saw them there was no shortening on songs, no songs from Load or Re-Load and everyone of the band seemed full of energy and played their best.

Rasta Rocker 01-11-2005 06:58 PM

ohh, i thought he meant the way they lived...cause people were talking about their financial situations

Bartender 01-11-2005 07:01 PM

But he was, so that was his point.

ThrashMaster27 01-11-2005 07:05 PM

I'm aware of such, that's why I was hoping for a reply to say how they paled in comparison now, to back then....probably should have wrote that.

Chu 01-11-2005 07:09 PM

Kill 'em All, Ride The Lightning and Master of Puppets are good. If not the best (Well, that's a claim! But then again this topic is full of outstanding claims..) all the rest are ****. Including ...And Justice For All - Metallica were a Metal band (With the name Metallica, how much more 80s metal can you get!) but slowly turned into an MTV Rock band. It was more of a de-evolution...

You thought ...And Justice For All was crappy? how so? I always thought it was their crowning moment technicality wise. The only negative point for me was a few of the songs being too long, seemingly just to be long.

Huber 01-11-2005 07:18 PM

...And Justice For All was amazing. To Live is to Die is my favorite Metallica Instrumental

Bartender 01-11-2005 07:28 PM

AJFA's production annoys me almost as much as St Anger's :)

I like the album, though.

munky_magik 01-11-2005 07:31 PM

IMO most of the songs from AJFA just drag on for too long, and almost all of this is accountable for by hamronised leads.
I love harmony, I really do but there's only so much I can take from one badly produced album.

Chu 01-11-2005 11:09 PM

I dunno, I can't stand AJFA :P
But Sliptallica's right, To Live is To Die is an amazing instrumental.

^Dream~Theater^ 01-11-2005 11:26 PM

I thought AJFA was a good album.

Freezing Moon 01-11-2005 11:29 PM

I agree. AJFA isn't that great, and the production is bad.

One song I really like though is Harvester of Sorrow. The solo sucks and ruins it, but overall it's pretty good.

I think that AJFA is the beginning of Metallica's "downfall", at least for me. The album wasn't horrible, but it wasn't great either.

metal_milita 01-11-2005 11:46 PM

whoevers running around saying metallica killed cliff so they can go commercial, or if cliff lived metallica would have stayed true to thrash metal, you're not very bright.
1) I heard it from here that Cliff had stated in an interview that they were going to try new things. Metallica's been flamed of selling out their entire career. Cliff's own quote (i'm just saying it to roughly what it actually is) "If people think that just because we're on a major record label that we sold out, then w/e." Listen to Kill 'Em All, and listen to Ride the Lightning. Listen to RTL and then MOP, listen to MOP and then AJFA. They're all different. Heres what I think is going on (Only major albums)
NLTL/Kill' Em All---->Ride The Lightning----->MOP------->AJFA------>Metallica---
Metal/Hard Punk---> Metal at its prime----->Metal----->Thrash Metal--> Rock/Metal---->
-->Load-------->Reload--------->St.Anger------->???
-->Rock------->Soft/Rock------->nu-metal-------> Metal/Hard Punk (start the cycle again)
FYI, Hard Punk refers to lots of power chords.
(edit)
My point is that each album has different even with Cliff in the band, save RTL and MOP.... Wait...
Regardless, I stand firm in my belief that Cliff wasn't just some metal anchor. Back when Cliff was alive, I heard Lars/James were the supposed metal anchor and they wouldn't change for no body.

They change their music every album and, big deal. You've gone through it for 20 years, whats the big deal about it now? This is Metallica. If they stayed the same, I'm positive everyone would want them to diversify instead of staying to plain old metal. Im glad they do, because I don't want to listen to fast thrashy metal everytime I pop in their CD. Songs like NOM, or St.Anger are important (to me).

\m/Pete\m/ 01-12-2005 12:11 AM

I thought AJFA's production was awesome, much better than the rest of the albums. I guess i sometimes judge a cd's production value by cracking it up when i listen to it. The bass is tight and punchy, the guitars never "fuzz" or "crystalize" to the point when you get that little treble ring, its very well produced considering the time period

\m/Pete\m/ 01-12-2005 12:13 AM
I agree. AJFA isn't that great, and the production is bad.

What? thats one of my favorite solos'. Why in your opinion does it ruin the song. When they play it live Kirks improv at the end of the solo owns btw

^Dream~Theater^ 01-12-2005 12:15 AM

The fact of a solo being good or bad is all in the person who's listening to it.
