I've heard of Mogwai before, Godspeed You! Black Emperor get compared to them all the time.

Dr. Jake Destructo 06-30-2005 02:40 PM

Hey Ben, since you're into Opeth, I picked up BWP two days ago. It's amazing so far. I'm already starting to learn Dirge For November. It's my favorite track so far. :D

DLing the Mogwai track too.

I must be the only one who doesnt like that track as much as the rest of the album.

But then again, I also freely admit my undying loyalty to the masterpiece called Still Life

you have good taste, Dirge for november own so much, i can play the clean part...i recorded it once upon a time...with *shudder* vocals...

Futuro 06-30-2005 02:50 PM

meh.... i cant really get into opeth, mainly because of the yelling.

Darkness 06-30-2005 02:52 PM

Thats one of the best parts. His growels are perfectly done.

Futuro 06-30-2005 02:53 PM

he sings good, but when he does the growling thing.....it just doesnt appeal to me.

Adam Jones is GOD 06-30-2005 02:55 PM

There are some non growl songs that should appeal. But the BWP/Still Life growls grew on me quickly.

However, the morning........rise ones are taking a while

/expects he avoided another Incubus mess up

It grows on ye it really does.

Futuro 06-30-2005 02:58 PM

i have been told it grows on you, But I grew out of the genre, i used to listen to alot of death metal, Nile ,Crytopsy, etc. but im just not a fan of the growls anymore.

Darkness 06-30-2005 02:58 PM

Yeah give A Fair Judgement a listen.

Artemician 06-30-2005 02:59 PM

I could only barely stand the growling at first, I actually kind of like it now.

Im a big fan of growls it can be a bit too much sometimes but the riffs and drums and bass are all so good.

Futuro 06-30-2005 05:20 PM
Im a big fan of growls it can be a bit too much sometimes but the riffs and drums and bass are all so good.
i listened to a few songs from them on there website, one i loved, and one i hated, but you cant doubt there musicianship.

BlindWriting 06-30-2005 05:22 PM

I've really learned to appreciate death growls because of Opeth. I used to despise death metal, but Opeth is one of my favorite bands now.

Futuro 06-30-2005 05:25 PM
I've really learned to appreciate death growls because of Opeth. I used to despise death metal, but Opeth is one of my favorite bands now.
he does do it better than most of em' its not like i hate em or anything, i just cant take the vocals for very long.

Do they have any instrumentals?

Rounder 06-30-2005 05:34 PM

im not an opeth fan, but i do enjoy the music from time to time. dont they have an acousticy record thats all chill and no growling called Dammnation or something? I have some songs that might be from that record that are all chill.

The thing about growling is this. People always say, they didnt like growling at first but after a while it didnt bother them. To me that sounds like drinking piss til it dont taste bad. I dont like growling, i never will, it makes the band seem like theyre trying too hard to be heavy. To each his own i guess.

Futuro 06-30-2005 05:50 PM
it makes the band seem like theyre trying too hard to be heavy.
exactly what i think.

Rounder 06-30-2005 05:58 PM

by the way....when are we gonna hear some fuking lateralus people???????

Dr. Jake Destructo 06-30-2005 05:58 PM

If you can't get beyond the vocals, you're never gonna get very far in expanding your tastes. I mean, the vocals aren't really one of the driving forces in Opeth's music. It is very built around the amazing insturmental sections.(Not to belittle Mikael's singing/growling, but I prefer his guitar playing) Oh well, at least you guys have given it a shot. :D

Oh, and if they're trying to be heavy, why did they make an entirely soft album? If they were trying to be heavy, don't you think they would only use distorted electric guitars? Again, it's just an opinion, but it's just not what I think.

Marshall- Sweet avatar/user title.

EDIT@Rounder- Chris is doing the guitar parts, and he said he would have them for us no later than tomorrow. Keep an eye open :thumb:

Futuro 06-30-2005 06:04 PM
If you can't get beyond the vocals, you're never gonna get very far in expanding your tastes.
hell i dont even know what the fuck maynard is saying half the time, i dont care about vocals, but it is tedious to listen too when there are other bands that please my ears.
by the way....when are we gonna hear some fuking lateralus people???????
im done with the drumming, not sure bout other guys.
Marshall- Sweet avatar/user title.
thanks, it looks like one of the mods(double bass jim) in the drum forum

Dr. Jake Destructo 06-30-2005 06:12 PM

Did you make it, or just find it somewhere?

It does have a certain resemblance to DBJ... Kind of like the Rob Trujillo and Donkey Kong similarity that YDload discovered. hehe

Lateralias 06-30-2005 07:36 PM

Still Life is my favorite album from Opeth aswell... I have their whole collection but I really like each album, even Damnation.. I think it was made to appeal to a softer crowd (Maybe I'm hinting to Faith here :p ) so Opeth could get more fans. I know a few people who have gotten into heavier Opeth with growls through Damnation.

ThePatient 06-30-2005 08:14 PM

So I've been gone for another 2 days, any news on the covers?

well, whenever I hear death vocals, I always get images of cheesy horror flick B movies. it just sounds cheesy and like they are trying too hard to be dark and evil sounding, even though the lyrics are quite poetic. It just doesnt sit well with my stomach i guess. He has an amazing singing voice and the music is very dynamic, but I cant see myself forcing......myself (hehe) to listen to death growls until ive become desensitized to them. I dont mind screaming, i listened to slayer and all that **** back in the day,but i just dont get into the low growling stuff.

I can relate to rounder here. I found it very hard to get into Opeth because of the growled vocals. However, I've always felt that the instruments were amazing. Akerfeldt is THE man, and after listening to a few of their albums (especially BWP) in contrast to other growling vocals of other metal bands, I've realized that he has one of the best pure growls in metal.

There is no other growl I can decipher as good as Mikael's, his are clear yet powerful at the same time.

When you see the DVD with him singing Leper Affinity you just realize he is very skilled with his growls. :)
Did you make it, or just find it somewhere?
i found it while searching for pron on the internet
