Yes, the drums were tuned like ****, and the complete lack of solo's just seemed un-holy for a Metallica album.

I've given my opinion on St. Anger a few times already in this thread, but the main point of it is..

Even though I, and many other people, don't like it, it was still a good album. If it weren't made by Metallica, many people would have liked it, but, it was made by Metallica. Compared to anything else they've made, it pretty much sucked.
I don't think you could've put that any better. :thumb:

^Dream~Theater^ 01-11-2005 12:38 AM
I saw them too. They did indeed own hard. I think I was referring to their studio ****, because I don't see why I would say they aren't decent anymore... I probably didn't make it very clear. I am pretty tired.

Oh well, the idea made sense in my head. :)
It's all good :thumb:

Metallica is diffinately past their prime, but that dosent mean they still cant make good music. They still play their old music, and like you guys said above^, they still rock. :thumb:

ArcLite 01-11-2005 01:07 AM

There's no doubt about it that they are still capable of putting out a quality album, its just a question of will they.

exactly. just because their last album sucked doesn't mean the next one will too

Joe 01-11-2005 09:47 AM

so they hit studios pretty soon, i hear. wonder what kinda songs we're going to hear out of it...

Burdcheese 01-11-2005 11:09 AM
Just to clear up on thing for all/most Metallica fans, a good song does *NOT* need a guitar solo. I have always found that Metallica fans worship their solo, and think any song without one is crap.
Certainly true, its just that a good guitar solo can make a song that extra bit special. They also give greater variety in longer songs.

The songs wouldn't be so long without the inclusion of the solos.

Burdcheese 01-11-2005 11:16 AM

Touché

munky_magik 01-11-2005 11:18 AM

Indeed :p

Burdcheese 01-11-2005 11:23 AM

waitacottonpickinminute....

I have been tricked :p

All this would imply that I have something against long songs

I find that long songs are fine as long as they diversify.
One thing that Metallica are particularly guilty of, IMO, is dragging out songs for too long without changing them enough.

Burdcheese 01-11-2005 12:40 PM

Very true. AJFA and St. Anger are most guilty of it (though obviously differing in quality).

Load also has a couple of varietiless giants (Bleeding Me, Outlaw Torn). Though they're not necessarily the best songs - they go on a bit

DisposableHeroes 01-11-2005 12:47 PM
I don't think you could've put that any better. :thumb:
Leppermessiah, are you on the Exodus boards?

Outlaw Torn get's away with it in my eyes as it is horrendously epic.
But alot of their songs do tend to drag on for a bit too long.

no.....what's that?

Another song that drags on without variety, as much as i love it, is the four horsemen. Too much time is taken up by simply thrashing the same cord and it gets somewhat tiresome the second time around.
Umm, next topic, Hmm....

who do you think has better guitars (aesthetically), James or Kirk?
I asked this earlier but no one saw, just curious for an answer. Personally I prefer the Explorer shape so my vote goes out to James.

JACKROXYOU 01-11-2005 03:12 PM

disposable hero always surprised me by how long it is

it ends and im like wow that was 8 min.?

btoto 01-11-2005 03:15 PM

^The only part I hate in 4 horsemen is the one they added in middle. Therefore, I love Mechanix from NLTL demo and Megadeth's Mechanix.

I totally agree with you. Disposable heroes is without a doubt my favourite Metallica song and it always seems to end too soon for my liking.

i agree, james plays cool guitars, explorers, vipers. and all the agressiveness of james live. kirk is cool too but my vote goes out to james

dave mustaine #2 01-11-2005 03:42 PM

http://www.mxtabs.net/tab_versions.php?path=Guitar,m,799,Metallica,The+Frayed+Ends+of+Sanity,3485 - This was the very first tab that I looked at on our very own dear MX.

Aberrationbass 01-11-2005 03:55 PM

i personally dont see st anger as there worst album it think load and re-load had good tracks but alot of ****.........
it pisses me off live when they leave out the melodic section in the four horsemen with the ascending bass line that bits awsome.
And Justice was awsome i think the songs are the right length for what they are.
What do you think is metallicas heavyest song?(i apologise if this has been done)
personally creeping death dyers eve or whiplash

^Dream~Theater^ 01-11-2005 04:00 PM

Dyers Eve

benfan 01-11-2005 04:00 PM

creeping death

master of puppets is pretty heavy, until the middle

wtf are you talking about?

well the only really long songs that i disslike are from recent albums. IMO, i didn't really notice when all the 1980's songs were 10 minutes long. Puppets is 8ish, Disposable Heros is 8ish, AJFA is 10ish, One is 9ish, the instrumentals are 8/9, etc
