It's as true as possible. Math is a human method of quantifying reality. 1+1+2 is "true" as calling grass green. Why is grass green? Because at some point someone decided that the color of grass is called green.
You are right. And if we as humans decided grass is pink and horses are really called unicorns, that would be "true" too. You are losing the concept of names. If you are going to argue about math you have to argue the same idea to everything.

That's just dumb. Of course it's black. It's black because we say it is. You cannot apply concrete ideas of "truth" to an abstract concept like a name.

2 =/= -2

2^2 = 4

-2^2 = 4
^^^ that defies ALLLLLLLLLLLLLLL logic. you only accept it because school drilled it into your head that, "this is ok, it still works lol."

im not arguing the usefulness of math, if there was a better way, we'd use it. but ITS NOT TRUE. knowing mathematics is not ataining knowledge. does a computer know what a 2 is? of coarse it ****ing doesn't man. its just a tool, there's no truth in it that your looking for.

im saying that there cant be truth in anything. except truth itsself.

you gotta think guys. question what they tell you. do you really think that america went to war with iraq because of WOMD? OF COARSE YOU DONT. but before the "truth came out" we were all like "omfg kill those beeches, they gots the WOMD, my government told me so."

its the exsact same concept with anything they tell you in school, or in church, or what your parents say, anything.

Uhh...

1+3=4 because we all know how to count and add numbers together.

Let me try to explain this...

People used to think the Earth was flat. This was regarded as fact and truth because there was no disputing it at that time. They couldn't disprove it. Eventually they discovered that it is actually round, which we know is a fact know.
The Earth is something that existed already and they were using their knowledge of it to come to the conclusions that they did.

Mathematics and numbers were INVENTED by man, they did not exist beforehand. There is nothing new to find out about 1+1 because it already has an answer that is set in stone, 2. We're not going to suddenly get some new information by doing equation after equation that tells us, oh, 1+1 is actually 3.

Phalanx 10-18-2006 09:13 PM

it's not the same though, numbers are names of how many of something there is

1 dot = .
2 dots = ..

1 dot + 2 dots = ...

2 dots x 2 dots = ....

but, if we represent -2 as a color, in today's mathematics

2 dots x 2 dots =....

That doesn't make sense unless im getting all this theory **** confused
2^2=2 x 2

Actually, it would be 2^2=2 x 2, so 2 x 2 = 4; however, -2^2 = -1 x 2 x 2, which would then, essentially, come out as -4. The one is just "invisible" as some would say. If it were (-2)^2 then, yes, that does equal -2 x -2, which does equal 4.

so if they were invented by man, 1 has NO MEANING, only the meaning that one man decided to give it. 1 is nothing, a concept, a theory.

It's because it's negative two (-2) negative two (-2) times.

So...

-2 * 1 = -2

That shows -2 one time.

-2 * -1 = 2

That shows -2 negative one times. Negative, being the opposite of positive, so when a negative number is multiplied by another negative, you are showing what happens when that negative is shown a negative number of times, thus making it positive.

That probably wasn't clear at all (because it's damn hard explaining it in detailed words like that), but you're just being difficult for the sake of being difficult.

I'm with Spiff on this one, because, the way I see it, you're not arguing logic, but you're arguing the definition of something.

If they thought us that 1+3 = 12, we would eventually grow and see it's illogical, just like we saw that Santa Clause was an illogical concept. And if someone said 1 + 1 is 3, he would be either wrong, or his concept of 3 is actually 2.

Weed would look like the color that it is regardless, green is the name that color was given.

The color was not invented, the name was.

irishslappop 10-18-2006 09:27 PM
or his concept of 3 is actually 2.
this is what im arguing. im not arguing that a single apple and a single apple make two apples, thats very "true". im arguing that if you were told from day 1 that 1+3=12 you would believe it, because it was told to you as truth.

numbers aren;t anything, they dont exist. can you punch the number one? of course you cant. number are what humans made them. they have no inherent traits because there is nothing inherent about them. it's a technicality, but the world runs off of them.

you cant say, i percieve this pen as black, but i know that it may not be and then say, all numbers have an inherent value, they;re both human constructs, its the same thing.

Radiobass81 10-18-2006 09:28 PM

Correct.

The way I see it, either Irish is discussing being taught illogical things, or being taught something if the definition of one thing was replaced by another (the value of three and the value of two, for example).
