Didn't hear that, wanderer. I'm not quite sure what you are talking about....
Hey Who people. The Who have their webcast site up and running and they will be broadcasting three songs from the Leeds show June 17. Which is just around the corner. It will be broadcast after a special "In The Attic Show". More details can be found at the site, which is just up and running: http://thewholive.tv/frontdoor/ The charge is just 99 cents with all proceeds going to Pete's charity Double 'O. Registration and payment is through Paypal. Which makes it all very easy. And if someone knows how to convert Brit time to American, if you take a look can you please tell me what time these broadcast are to take place? I have not registered yet (will later) and maybe the correct American time will be included. But maybe not. I've checked online, and it's all so confusing. Anyway, get your "ticket" for this sure to be fantastic show as The Who return to Leeds University to kick off their brand new WORLD TOUR. It's sure to be exciting.... |
Can you operate Rapidshare ? I send the adress ?
After hearing this I find it strange that when people claim it's not superb classic Townshend album |
Hmmm. Looks interesting, John.
|
Ok guys, the "In The Attic" loop is up at Pete's site. It showed three short excerpts of The Who performing three new songs in rehearsal and the songs sound good. Very exciting. One was a balled, another a mid-tempo number sung by Pete, and an up tempo number that sounded great. The performances were a little tentative it being a rehearsal, and Pete says they just did run through the entire "mini opera" a couple of days ago. But even with the somewhat poor webcast audio all sounds promising. The clips are just a couple minutes a peice so don't expect a lot, but it's enough to give hope of a good tour and some good records coming out.
The show is running in a loop for the next couple of days. Depending on when you catch it you'll have to sit through some other stuff that is somewhat hit and miss, and then you'll see the band in rehearsal with Pete joining the show afterward. Good enough way to spend part of an hour.... |
Hey. If a mod sees this I know this is a triple post, but this is a band thread that has not been real active lately and this can happen. And an edit above won't work because this is new stuff. So a bit of a bump might be in order, also. I've been banned twice recently in R&M just for posting, basically. I would like it to not happen again.
Hey guys. I'm happy to report these new songs are good. I was mistaken when I said you only get to hear a small peice in the rehearsal footage. You get to hear quite a lot. Including an entire song. The first one played is the least memorable. Don't know the titles. The second one, upon hearing it for the second time, is a good rock ballad of sorts, about the internet. It connects rock n roll dreams with it. Which may sound corny. But remember, this is Townshend. The man who brought you Tommy, and made it all work. Instead of "the interent" he calls it an "endless wire". Didn't get to hear the whole song, but it has those classic Roger/Pete vocals. Next song, rock n roll wonder and mystery again. The struggle to make it, to dream. This song we get to hear all of. But to tell you the truth, I was too taken with the music to notice the lyrics. This is Townshend power chord stuff. Roger sounds great. The band is terrific. That's another thing. Even in reheasal they sound great. But you can tell it's a rehearsal. They are glancing at sheet music, holding back a little, maybe. But you can see they are ready to gig. They are fantastic. And from the sound of it, they believe they are The Who. I don't want to overstate things. This is not a return to past glories or greatness. But it is The Who, believe it or not, and they have at least a few good new songs to prove it. And I'm happy to report Townshends pop sensibilities appear to be intact. I don't know what these songs will sound like on record. But if they were to play five new songs this good at any gig, no one would complain or leave their seats. So that's good news from The Who front. Tour starts Saturday. |
I'm glad the material sounds good. We all know Pete still has it in him.
Do we know who's playing bass for the tour? |
Pino Palladino is playing once again. He's pretty much the perm bassist now. What's good I think is they just came out of the studio, all of them had been working on various projects before hand, and they just sound tight. Even Simon Townshend sounds pushed up in the mix as the new songs call for acoustic and electric guitar. He even plays mandolin on one track.
Again, I don't want to give raised expectations, and I've had the luxery of hearing these songs three times because of an apparent glitch at the site. And yeah, it's The Who. First time I listened I was just sort of "Hmm"? Because I was listening very closely. You know, it's exciting. I really couldn't come to a conclusion. But the last two times I listened, it's there. The songs are good, the band is good playing them. Can't deny it. The first song is ok good. The second song is good and rather short, as Pete explains later some tracks on the "mini opera" are less then two minutes long, as that's all that was called for in the context. Anyway, two minutes or not "Endless Wire", or whatever the hell it's called, is pretty much classic Townshend rock ballad and storytelling. And the last song is pretty much a Who rocker. It's lean, melodic, a bit pop, forceful, and contains a bit of musical twists and turns. Mostly it's a straight ahead rocker, though. Being a fan for me it's just a relief to finally hear something and no matter what be able to think "that's a pretty good song". It certainly isn't bad. |
i was about to buy The Who - Whos Next but i realised there is a deluxe version with a live performace of whos next live at the young vic?
is this live performance deluxe edition worth buying? is the live performance good? i know the original wont let me down but this costs alot more |
I have opposite reaction. It think the parts of new song they have played have to be worst stuff Pete has put out. Boring music, bad lyrics and boring production. Should have used outside producer but Pete's ego propably got in the way. Endless Wire was very enjoyable when he played it In The Attic show but way worse when they played on that rehearsal. Other new songs that has been played during In The Attic show had nice melodies/words so it's a shock how terrible Mirrod Door and rehearsal stuff was.
This record seems to bee fully Townshend solo record with Roger on vocals and it doesn't work (at least on this new stuff ). I wouldn't hold my breath that rest of CD will be any better. This record could have been great 'Townshend record' but as 'Who' record it doesn't seem to work at all (at least this stuff doesn't). Naturally waiting and hoping to be proveng wrong. |

Couldm't really tell you. I like the Young Yic performance. Although some of the songs they do from Who's Next sound tentative because they are still working them out for stage. Stll, for all that extra money (it is steep for an album) you can get a whole different Who record. Live or not. Are you buying a CD or downloading from a service? Because allofmp3.com has that version for pennies on the dollar. Also, I can upload the Young Vic gig for you. I think I offered before but you declined. Your call.... Can't thank you enough..... And I couldn't disagree with you more about the new Who stuff. Which believe it or not I was able to catch again as soon as I woke up, as the loop was rolling around. I don't know what these songs sounded like with just Townshend doing them, but you say yourself they have "good words/melodies" and it "could have been a great Townshend record" perhaps. So now it'll be a good Who record, hopefully. And I think the band sounds good playing these songs. This is a good band. The songs should slide in nicely alongside the rest of the Who material onstage, IMO.... |
im thinking that live at the young vic is nowhere near as good as L@L. So i think ill settle for the remastered single cd version. Ive found someone who has the performance but thanks for the offer JXD. I hope you are right about the new tunes.

Alright Who Heads, I got my "tickets" for this Saturday and Sunday. Leeds University and Brighton whatever, here I come. :)
The site at www.thewholive.tv (not a proper link) is up and running and looking good. Some parts are still under construction, but what they have going on is very impressive. These folks are mega-charitable. And they make you want to be involved. This will be a 15 month world tour, it will raise ten million dollars for charity, and every single show will be recorded for sale on CD and DVD. All profits going to charity. Webcasts of all shows, some full length, and lot's of auction items will also be available. Including an autographed guitar Townshend smashed onstage in 2004. I saw a clip of that on Towser TV. Very exciting. And they have a mailing list. So I have my reciept and stuff but don't know how to actually access the broadcasts. Unless it's through my order number or reciept number, as a password or ticket number don't seem to be present. I've contacted customer service and will post more details for those interested when I have more details. This will be fun. And where is Lunch? Post up, man. Things are starting to happen.....:chug: |
The site at thewholive.tv still seems to be going though some changes. It's back to it's very basic scheme. So if you visit don't expect much, although they are probably just setting up things still, as this morning it had a bunch more stuff on it. So disregard what I said in a previous post about it being "up and running". Although it is there and functioning.
Anyway, looks like they will be doing the Wine & Glass EP in it's entirety. Here is a quote from Pete's journal: 13 June 2006 Wire & Glass in rehearsal We are playing it. It sounds great. It's new, and that feels strange, we haven't played anything new for such a long time, but it's also familiar - I remember playing new songs to audiences who were really unsure they wanted to hear them. This selection is eleven minutes long, we will blast through it, and if the crowd get distracted they can buy our fabulous merchandizing. -Pete Townshend So that's pretty cool...... EDIT: Rehearsal pics. Looking good: http://img161.imageshack.us/img161/6839/petesideonrh0jf.jpg http://img161.imageshack.us/img161/774/untitled6hu.jpg http://img218.imageshack.us/img218/1941/0iko8vc.jpg http://img161.imageshack.us/img161/6600/petewithscreens0os.jpg http://img161.imageshack.us/img161/2097/petelaughingrh5ev.jpg |
Hey you Who fags. Where the fuc.k is everyone, for chrissakes? The tour starts tommorow at Leeds University. Isn't anyone excited? What are your hopes for the tour. Your expectations? Pics in the above post. Pretty sweet, amirite? This fuc.king thread is like a ghost town.
I've been abandoned except by a few. :( |
i lurk in this thread. I never have anything interesting to add except how much the Who kick ***
|
Good enough, seafroggys. Nice to see you are still with us holding down the fort.
And yes, urite. The Who kick major ***. And they will continue to do so at Leeds Uni tommorow. :) |
I wonder if it the leeds gig will be a small crowd of around 2000-3000 again?
|
I wonder if it the leeds gig will be a small crowd of around 2000-3000 again?
Yup. 2,100. Bet it's going to be loud. The Who played a 1,300 seat venue in Vegas back in late 2002 and reports are that it was ear-splittingly loud. They have always done well in small venues, it seems. I bought a "ticket" for 99 cents to see three tunes performed. I hope they have there crap together at the site because they say they have no record of my purchase. I'll pay again, but it's just the principle. And if it isn't going to work the first time, what would lead me to believe it would the second? I just want to see the Who and be a small part of this. |
The Who are doing a world tour, but i wonder if that will include Australia. I really want to hear "The Real Me" performed live
|
It's a 15 month world tour so you never know. Although I believe so far as performing The Real Me that prospect died with John....
|
Check it out, guys. I got my ticket.
*excited* http://img220.imageshack.us/img220/3939/untitledojojko4qq.jpg :) |
i thought you were actually going there
Oh man, don't I wish. I think it's going to be an excellent show. This will get me three songs. Maybe if they are feeling generous one or two more. But I doubt it as it's all for charity and they want people to continue to tune in at 99 cents a pop. I'm just excited to see The Who at Leeds. I don't think their is any footage of them from their 1970 appearance there, so this is a real treat. When they come to South California I will be sure to be there. |
I got my ticket for the Londen hyde park gig :) it will be a full setlist
and I need to fly there and book a htoel there, but Iwill also see Roger Waters ft Nick Mason :) and maybe I have some work at Wimbledon there, and all that in 5 days :p |
We'll expect a full report/review, Prince....
Saw the webcast. They opened strong if a bit tentatively with Who Are You, I Can't Explain, The Seeker, and Substitute. Sounded good, good energy, but as I said a bit tentative as might be expected from the opening numbers of a new tour. Good deal..... |
Oew The Seeker that one is nice :D
|
I just thought that I would share with everyone:
I had a dream last night that I got tickets for me and all my friends to The Who. Except, the show was on a giant cruise ship docked where the USS Intrepid would be. So we get there, and are somehow able to catch them while rehearsing. John Etwistle was there, and he looked like he did in the 70's even though Pete and Roger looked the way they do today. John was also playing a three-string bass. As it turns out, I do something to the ship that causes it to sink. Some of my friends use an undersea escape pod (yeah...I don't know) and I get in a cheap liferaft that doesn't fully stay above the water. I start semi-floating through the streets of New York, and as the ship was going down I heard The Who playing from it. So if they decide to play on any ocean liners, I advise everyone to not go to that show, and try to catch them next time. |
Yeah my friend is off to see the who in brighton tonight.
Does anyone know who's playing bass and drums on this tour because he apparently couldn't find out anywhere. Does anyone else not think that they are just a little bit past it though? |
Zak Starksley (how you spell it) is drumming :)
|
Pino Palidino is playing bass I think. They are both very good.
|
Pino Palidino is playing bass I think. They are both very good.
'Cept he's welsh:p |
Well the Who are English, but I don't hold anything against them :p

It's about time you show your face around here. It's been a big Who week. And to answer whoever asked, The Who are not "past it" yet. After this tour they may be, and Roger's voice is sometimes worse for wear (after all his instrument is a part of him. And his aging body) but they are not past it. They sounded brilliant yesterday. |

Yea, I was in Ocean City for a week of straight drinking, smoking, and partying with most other seniors who graduated from around here. I've come back a changed person, but I still love the Who.
|
Fair enough, wont be long now though eh?
Afraid not. This will most likely be the last go around. I think Pete will always make music, and Roger can act, sing a little, whatever. But they are 62 and 63, respectively. And you know playing the kind of music they play the way they play it is a young mans game. So maybe they will get together once in awhile as Pete and Rog or sometihng. But with a batch of new material out and a 15 month tour going, I would think this might be the last. Maybe yet another "farewell tour" and call it a day.
Yea, I was in Ocean City for a week of straight drinking, smoking, and partying with most other seniors who graduated from around here. The Who will be with you through it all. They were for me. I'll never let them go. :) |
Yea I think I just guaranteed that I'll die before I get old thanks to Beach Week.
