BludgeonySteve 03-25-2006 11:39 PM

Yeah. It could possibly have Alex's best guitar solo.

Actually, I can't pick a favorite one :( :)

rockinbass17 03-26-2006 12:38 AM

I think my picks for his top three would be:

La Villa
2112- Soliloquy- so emotional
A Farewell to Kings- I like how he pushes the time.

thunderzstruck 03-26-2006 09:09 AM

yyz is a cool solo
i love the break down like part in limelight

Hmm, yeah, soliloquy is very emotional and beautiful sounding. My only complaint with it is that there are noticeable mistakes which you don't see on any of their albums after 2112 but you see on nearly every album before it. 'kings was definitly the album where they mastered the studio.

rockinbass17 04-09-2006 08:27 PM

Yeah, there is definatly noticable improvement in musicianship from '74 on, peaking at their late 70's early 80's years. Songwriting, too, got better during this time.

BludgeonySteve 04-25-2006 09:23 PM

Darn right.

BludgeonySteve 04-30-2006 10:03 PM

Ahem! Darn right!

What's everyone's opinion of the song Subdivisions? I love the keyboards on it.

Rattlehead 05-01-2006 04:38 AM

i have

Farewell to Kings
Hemispheres
2112

...what similar albums should i get? cause i like those. in that rocky style. i don't want Red Barchettarry sruff.

If you want more rocky stuff get Permanant Waves and everything released before it, that was before they started experimenting heavilly with the synth. Fly By Night is probably my favorite out of the 70's Rush.

Rattlehead 05-01-2006 07:15 AM

cool. yeah, i don't like their synth experimentation.

nice name lol.

thats one of my favorite songs by them
i cant get enough of it

its just sooo good

BigTrav415 05-01-2006 02:26 PM

I only have 2112 still, I hope to get more of their early stuff. I'll go for Hemispheres or Fly By Night next probably, or maybe a live album.

I like it, except the chorus doesn't appeal to me. But the rest is pretty good.

Trav, I suggest Hemispheres before Fly By Night. But that's just me.

BludgeonySteve 05-01-2006 04:15 PM

Yep, Hemispheres before Fly By Night. I'd also suggest A Farewell To Kings and Permanent Waves. Those are possibly better than Hemispheres.

Meh, thats my favorite part of it. I do think that its kinda hurt by all the 80s synths, but it still a quality song.

Maggot Dream 05-01-2006 05:23 PM

Hemispheres is my favorite album by Rush, but A Farewell to Kings is excellent. It's probably better for people who aren't already big Rush fans.

And it has Xanadu, which is possibly the greatest drug-inspired epic of all time.

BludgeonySteve 05-01-2006 05:31 PM

It's drug inspired? I always thought it was based on Samuel Taylor Colridge's poem Kubla Khan. http://etext.virginia.edu/stc/Coleridge/poems/Kubla_Khan.html

Xanadu is inspired by Kubla Khan, which is a drug inspired poem.

BigTrav415 05-01-2006 06:39 PM

Yeah, I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that Kubla Khan was written while the author was high on opium and something else I think. I've been reading the Rush Wikipedia article.

/noob :upset:

rockinbass17 05-01-2006 07:24 PM

Let's not forget about the title track and Cyngus X-1, which are also great songs, possibly better than Xanadu ftw.

132WalrusesInMexico 05-01-2006 07:37 PM
Let's not forget about the title track and Cyngus X-1, which are also great songs, possibly better than Xanadu ftw.
Cygnus X-1 Book 1: The Voyage is a fantastic song. I like it more than Book 2: Hemispheres. Hemispheres does have one of my favorite lyrical themes though. Neil Peart is a genius song writer and drummer. Books 1 & 2 are supposed to be related, but I have a hard time finding the relationship. In Book 1: The Voyage, the character flies his ship into the black hole called Cygnus. Then Book 2: Hemispheres is about the battle between Dionysus and Apollo. Cygnus brings balance between the two. I guess thats kind of a relationship.

I believe that my girlfriend and I are going to do a cover of Resist (the acoustic version) for a bunch of people at my dad's birthday party... it should be pretty sweet.

Thats cool, I prefer the acoustic version to the version on Test For Echo.

I don't have Test For Echo, and I don't think I've heard the studio version.... but it's just such a pretty song... I love it

Test For Echo is one of their weaker albums in my opinion. There are only a few tracks that I like, Resist being one of them.

Kenny_Fever 05-01-2006 09:59 PM

I'm really looking forward to doing this song though... actually I've been playing it a lot tonight. I started playing along with the DVD to learn it, and ultimately I could probably do it on my own, but I'd like to do it with someone else.

Anyway, I'm off to bed. Goodnight all

EDIT: sorry for the occasional bad punctuation (and spelling mistakes)... I've been noticing it after I post

Trooper Rabbit 05-03-2006 02:39 PM
It's on the Rush in Rio DVD...
heh thats alright

132WalrusesInMexico 05-03-2006 08:53 PM
so what is Xanadu about exactly?
Xanadu is about a poem by Samuel Taylor Coleridge. Xanadu is the name of the summer capital for the ruler Kubla Khan who ruled over much of Asia. Xanadu was said to be such a splendid place, it (along with opium) inspired Samuel Coleridge to write a poem about it. It also became a metaphor for wealth.

BludgeonySteve 05-09-2006 09:30 PM

I know I throw a reference to Xanadu into a song every chance I get :D

BludgeonySteve 05-13-2006 10:32 AM

I reviewed Roll The Bones. http://sputnikmusic.com/review_6860

Read!

rockinbass17 05-13-2006 11:59 AM

Haha, the rap in Roll The Bones is hilarious.
If I remember correctly, there was an animated skeleton on the big veiwscreen during that part when I saw them live two summers ago.

BludgeonySteve 05-13-2006 12:35 PM

Yep, that's what they do :(. I saw it on one of their dvds. So funny and yet so lame.

132WalrusesInMexico 05-13-2006 12:36 PM

Bazarov 05-13-2006 12:38 PM

So, I've never been a fan of Rush. But I heard Freewill on the radio about two days ago, it was pretty damn awesome. What album is that song on, I really want to check out more of their stuff now.

BludgeonySteve 05-13-2006 12:44 PM

Permanent Waves. I would reccomend The Spirit of the Radio, Natural Science, and Jacob's Ladder from that album as well.
