AN S&L suggestion:

So guys, what do you think if we make a monthly voting for the best song/poem that's been written here? How could would that be!

*steals other forums ideas lol*

It has been tried and failed in the past.

On the other hand, having an S&Ler of the month might be cool. Someone judged not only on their songs, but also their critting and such as well?

What do you reckon the LC's are for?

TojesDolan 10-27-2005 11:04 PM

Yeah but I have original material for each category. I leave the best for S&L, leftovers and B-sides for LC. I have big trouble with that.

We could have an S&Ler of the month, though. Don't make a thread about it, just some... uh... announcement. Or a thread, but Burt might not like it.

CSD & the Soul Machines 10-27-2005 11:26 PM

I like S&Ler OTM idea.

Another cool idea would be to have a topic challenge. I know the LC has to use a word, but perhaps we could implement a topic challenge as well. Like choose a word issue or something and write a song about it. It would be cool. Maybe even have to do a little research to learn about the topic at hand, get some learning in aswell. Just a crazy idea.

I think we can just wait for Burt's approval in here, then I can run it if no one else wants to. I run it in R&M and Pop-Punk so I have a good handle on how it goes down :)

Spectrum 10-28-2005 12:17 AM

S&L'er of the month would be a great idea, and a good incentive as well. If it helps maintain the participation of the good critters and writers, that's great, and if it produces better S&L'ers in general, that would make life so very wonderful.

^^ This is why I don't write anymore.

I try to write a song and I come out with third-rate God knows what.

I miss being part of this community. :(
It helps that we're beginning to get a core group here that can at least crit each other, and grow as a group.
The only problem with that is unless you get some really honest people, there's going to be some ass licking going on.

I agree about S&Ler of the month being a good idea, might give people* more enthusiasm for doing crits.

Yeah, I did a couple of 'song of the month' threads a while back... the problem with that is that it's no fun trawling through a month's worth of crud to find a few diamonds... you get so sick of seeing the same song over and over it's unbelievable.

But an S&Ler of the month could work...

I'll be honest.

That is really bad.

But hey, you don't get better without practice.

EmergencyRoom 10-28-2005 07:08 AM

Hey all:wave:

My internet still sucks:upset:

I just wanted to say thanks to Jason 101 for critiquing my last song, it was very helpful. I just got round to reading it and it's all appreciated.:thumb:

It might work as a monologue, but it was pretty sucky.

Yeah I know, and it's only the second thing I've written since December. I'm not saying I was good before, but man I'm in an unending drought right now.

What you wrote reminded me of about 100 different songs posted in the last year.

Anyway, I feel your pain. I'm not as prolific as I once was, and anyone that's been around long enough knows that doesn't mean much.

I am just having a hard time thinking up lyrics, especially ones that I'm satisfied with. I don't know if some people realise how hard this is...

Burt, what do you think about us running an S&Ler of the month? I'd prefer your approval as opposed to just going ahead with it.

metaliq 10-28-2005 01:24 PM

My band is playing our third show with the five songs we have tonight. Not bad for only being together 3 months.

I scream and sing and talk lyrics I write.

THAT'S COOL.

A_Perfect_Sonnet 10-28-2005 01:33 PM

Any recordings Ty?

Cool beans man. Congrats. My band is starting to get it right too. We're more of a studio as of the moment because I play almost all of the instruments and we're still searching for a drummer. Can anyone tell me how to let you guys hear some of my recordings?

ATC 10-28-2005 02:30 PM

Metaliq, that's awesome. Upload some of yer stuff.

MMPR, Upload them to Purevolume if they're MP3. If they arent, get a free converter.

I tried that with ummm soundclick and it didn't work. I'll try purevolume though. Hopefully I'll get something up by tonight.

Nightvision 10-28-2005 04:49 PM

What do you lot look like? I'm wondering, and it hardly seemed worth starting a thread over... post pictures to satisfy my morbid curiosity.

for some reason, that link re-loads this page... :-/

Spectrum 10-28-2005 05:15 PM

Not for me it doesn't... let's try that again.

xKONRADx 10-28-2005 05:17 PM

Contrary to the opinions so far, i dont like the idea for an S&Ler of the month. It doesnt really contribute to songwriting or critting here and thats what we need to work on most. plus it will clutter up the board and we got rid of some long standing threads that were stickied before so it doesnt make much sense to me.

I do really like MMPR's idea though and was thinking maybe it could be run staggered to the regular LC in the LC forum. That way we dont have to wait doing nothing in there for the crits that only come at the end of the week. Plus i think it might challenge some writing styles that people in there have developed.

xKONRADx 10-28-2005 05:19 PM

Also i am pissed. I used to be able to count on the 1:10 ratio for crits: pageviews. It looks like its down to 1:20. and two of the three ive gotten say nothing about my song.

Spectrum 10-28-2005 08:35 PM

Did mine ever work for you, Jason?

Spectrum 10-28-2005 09:06 PM

Yeah, Burt actually is pretty good-looking. I was surprised.

Also, on a side note, I love the work that Burt put up on his PureVolume. Really interesting, ambient, and powerful.

ATC 10-28-2005 09:20 PM

I don't like the idea of S&L'er of the month either. For one, it devalues the LC to some extent and like Konrad said, its not going to help anyone develop and will very likely end up a circle jerk.

Nightvision 10-29-2005 07:10 AM

Spectrum - worked on my home computer... must just be the ones at work being retarded.

I keep meaning to check out Burt's stuff, but on a 56k, that's a bit more of a commitment, and there are so many bands I'm into at the moment, it's just not funny.

A_Perfect_Sonnet 10-29-2005 04:53 PM

Tojes, ever since you became a regular here, you've lost your mystique.

TojesDolan 10-29-2005 04:57 PM

I beg you pardon? Mind to explain?

OK I'm getting a little nervous because of all the internet stuff I've been getting lately. Strange interent stuff.

A_Perfect_Sonnet 10-29-2005 04:59 PM

I used to think you were some mysterious intellectual, because every once and a while you'd come in and crit someone's piece, then you were out like a flash.

Now you're just here. It's how I feel, I thought I'd point it out.

TojesDolan 10-29-2005 05:15 PM

Well... I don't know what to say. I'm surprised, indeed. I think that... well. Let me see if I can explain my condition:

1. I haven't been around a lot for making thorough criticisms. The onyl thing I'll ever take seriously on the internet will be a) my music b) my songwriting c) my art. Those are the only things I've only cared about, and the only things I will care about until the end of the world. I have tried to fit in... well, not exactly. Try to be around and get to know the fellow writers.

I know that's dissapointing at some rate seeing someone as... well. Let's say it, intellectual, and comes up with stupid sh¡t like I do in this thread, but this place, particularly the community threads and replies (LC case I'm talking about) I don't really try to be witty or funny, or at any rate look like I'm what I'm not. I do stupid stuff that makes no... oh shut the fuck up Conor!!

*Stops Bright eyes - A perfect sonnet*

*Puts on some CoB - Kissing the shadows*

But yes. That's my way to see it. I don't know how I come up like some sort of intelectual, anyhow. I know several stuff, some useful, some isn't, but overall, I try to put my heart into whatever others write, because I'm expecting that they put a little of them in their writing.

But yeah, that's what happens. I don't get the intelectual part either but we can like... discuss it or something, I suppose.

morrissey 10-29-2005 05:16 PM

I think you're overthinking this.
