I like what I heard, although it appears this album will be less heavy than Train of Thought. Some are comparing it to SFAM in terms of sound, and I guess that would be accurate...although I personally think it sounds like a little SFAM, a little Awake, a little ToT...but we'll see.
That would be ok with me...SFAM is number one on my DT chart so a similar sounding album would be great. Although they can really do no wrong IMO.

Biancazzurri 05-18-2005 11:45 AM

what is the octavarium meaning?

juggalotricksta 05-18-2005 06:04 PM

I just ordered Suspended Animation...can anybody tell me what to expect?

/superstoked :thumb:

Ps I was also wondering about Transatlantic...has anyone listened to it that wants to share some opinions? I'm wondering if its worth picking up...

JamieSomething 05-18-2005 11:30 PM

Octavarium..well
pretty much, it's their 'eigth' full lengthed album
pretty much their eigth album
it's following a trend..
Six Degrees was, their sixth album
Train of Thought had, seven songs
Octavarium is their eigth album
with, eight songs

now..I noticed something..
Octavarium, the song, is 24 minutes long

A Change of Seasons is, roughly 24 minutes, it has, seven songs sequing into the next
Octavarium, Octa meaning..eight
..
do I sense a continuation?

FlyingPaul_83 05-18-2005 11:34 PM

twenty four minutes long, holy sh*t, i can't even pay attention to anything for that long.

pizzapie88 05-18-2005 11:41 PM

Sorry for another question about the release of octavarium but... does it come out worldwide on June 7 or just in america?

JamieSomething 05-18-2005 11:50 PM

dunno..probably America, but..'ll go look

pwal 05-19-2005 10:10 AM

I am getting really excited at the new album- sounds like it will be another stunning effort

Otherside 05-20-2005 06:24 AM
Thanks for the upload. :) Personally I've always though Portnoy is a bit overrated by a lot of people...he's a good drummer, but not one of the best around today, as a lot of people say he is. Especially given the talent which he plays with in Dream Theater, I'd say he's definitely behind Petrucci and Ruddess in terms of actual instrumental talent.
There is a big awe-factor involved with his hype, the drum set he playes on is insanly well set up. All the drummers I know, when I showed them Live at Budokan, their jaws litterally dropped when they saw his huge set. But then again, I'm not in much of a position to say how good he is or is not, seeing as I know next to nothing about drums.

123..

Does anyone know if the UK tour dates have been confirmed yet?

Lord Abortion 05-20-2005 08:37 AM

portnoy's siamese monster kit is amazing

I read an interview with him in rhythm magazine last year, discussing ToT interesting it was

Jev 05-20-2005 08:39 AM

I think Dream Theater needs that interval. I heard they sometimes play 30 songs.

Lord Abortion 05-20-2005 08:41 AM

yeah... it will be amazing.

I really hope I don't have to go all the way to london to see them though that would be difficult.

Where did they go on the last tour?

ElectricalStorm 05-20-2005 09:55 AM

first two tracks of octavarium found here:

http://www.musicianforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=342832

This 100% the real deal. The songs definitely have a heavy sound and I like both quite a bit. :thumb:

Lord Abortion 05-20-2005 10:10 AM

ah well- manchester here I come

pwal 05-20-2005 10:51 AM
I think Dream Theater needs that interval. I heard they sometimes play 30 songs.
they usually play like 3h or 3h and a half

such beasts :D

Biancazzurri 05-20-2005 12:52 PM

and between the songs they start to beat the **** out of their instruments with improvisations... cool for sure

bassist-bmxer 05-20-2005 02:25 PM
i think they went to london and manchester. i think...

I hope they play at the Brighton Dome, because then I could get free tickets :D

vashts80 05-20-2005 03:49 PM

The ToT kit is amazing (I think that's the Siamese Monster one, not sure though)

3 kicks, two snares, and a bunch of toms and cymbals. It's amazing. Not to mention the octobans.

Chu 05-22-2005 06:52 PM

I'm really liking the bassist (John Myung?) after hearing The Ytse Jam (?) as well as his obvious contributions to alot of their other songs, so I did some reading up on him, and I read a web site that said something about Myung knocking LaBrie over or something, what happened? Or was it a hoax..
Edit: Here's a picture of the apparant incident...

Edit: I was also looking for other songs which have good bass :)

funk_metalguitarist 05-23-2005 03:20 AM

^^^
I heard someone dared JM to tackle Labrie on stage. That's how it happened
For Myung's bass work, check out Metropolis pt 1, the dance of eternity, scarred and the spirit carries on.

horseypie 05-23-2005 04:20 AM

lol....mike portnoy looks funny in the background

jamesclelland 05-23-2005 08:45 AM

I can't seem to navigate there site very well (i'm not the sharpest knife around) but anyway are they doing an american tour? i saw a european tour, but there is no way in hell i'm traveling to europe to see them. Maybe to another state or BC but not across the pond.

the2stranger 05-23-2005 10:25 AM

true, and we always thought myung was such a quiet polite guy, he can pul of some unecspected trciks form time to time :p
the best part is, myung kept palying when he tackled James :D

on another note:
does Myung play chapman stick on Budokan?, if yes, on which tracks?

Trev 05-23-2005 10:38 AM

Yeah he does. I'll find the track now, I think its from Six Degrees though.

Edit - New Millenium, I think thats the only one, maybe not though.

joas 05-23-2005 10:50 AM

The intro to Panic Attack is quite cool. Sounds like they're still using C standard on this one (that or a seven..).

ElectricalStorm 05-23-2005 01:05 PM

They're doing Gigantour with Megadeth and a slew of other bands--including Symphony X. Gigantour is a U.S. tour but I don't think many dates/cities have been announced yet.

trev913 05-23-2005 01:07 PM

Yeah. I hope dearly they'll come back to St. Louis. I'd love to see them.

vashts80 05-23-2005 02:34 PM

Does anybody have the lyrics for 'These Walls"?

Werny 05-24-2005 02:08 AM

I am uncontrollably hooked on these guys at the moment, I was correct, they do have to grow on me.

Stream of Consciousness is the greatest song of all time. The most emotional playing ever.

I don't like Scenes From A Memory or the second half of Images & Words, but 6DOIT, A Change of Seasons and Train of Thought are hardcore. I love the keyboards, and (with the exception of the rapping in Honor Thy Father and the ridiculous attempt at sounding death in This Dying Soul) the vocals especially.

Lord Abortion 05-24-2005 03:18 AM

i have now come to the conclusion that scenes from a memory is amazing and has now become my 3rd favourite DT album

beyond this life and through her eyes are incredibly moving

Chu 05-24-2005 03:41 AM

I found the best picture ever!
But I dunno where I got it, I was looking through some of my Hard drive, and found a picture of the cover of Master of Puppets.
It has R.I.P Metallica 1982 - 1991 on the center head stone, oh so funny.
And Dream Theater at the top.
Sorry, random dribble.

juggalotricksta 05-24-2005 11:52 AM
(with the exception of the rapping in Honor Thy Father and the ridiculous attempt at sounding death in This Dying Soul)
what

nowitzki 05-24-2005 05:26 PM

The 2 tracks i've heard for Octavarium are awesome, can't wait for the album to get released.

Does anyone else think Panic Attack sounds a bit Muse-like? Labries singing at times is a lot like Matt Bellamy.
does Myung play chapman stick on Budokan?, if yes, on which tracks?
yes on new millenium, as on the album version

vashts80 05-24-2005 05:31 PM

I thought These Walls sounded more Bellamy-esque than Panic Attack, actually. At least the chorus of These Walls, anyways.
