what are you doing there moan?
|
I guess I oughta introduce myself. Name's Jon, I'm 27, and live in San Antonio. I've been playing one instrument or another since I was 9. I started off with the clarinet, and quickly moved to percussion. I stayed with percussion, adding keys, bass and guitar during High School - incidently my drumline instructor was the percussion instructor for the Marine Corp Band. Played in a couple bands in highschool, and had a few live shows. I recently hooked back up with one of my old bandmates, hadn't seen each other in 5 years, and both of us are from the east coast, somehow ended up in San Antonio. So we're putting some stuff together. He's playing guitar and writes most of the lyrics. Synths/Drums/Bass and production falls on me. We're shooting for an old skool Wax Trax type sound. Demo should be done within 6 months, and we plan on gigging shortly thereafter.
I'm also in the process of doing some remixes for a band from Houston. <begin gratuitous spam>you can check them out @ www.provision-musik.net</spam> |
 to Jon

Hey Jon, I play the clarinet :)
|
G'day Jon :)
Good work Moaner :thumb: Far out! That Morrison/Watrous gig was... woah. /seriously hopes you guys know who the heck at least one of those guys are. They amazed the crowd as usual. Morrison ended up doing so this time - not by playing the piano and trumpet at the same time or swapping between two instruments every few (excessively quickly played)notes - but by rotating his trumpet as he played and then playing it while it was upside down (hitting the keys with his finger joints - and going fast as hell the whole time). That was hot. And Watrous just went crazy on the trombone... as he does. My trombone teacher was playing in the band backing them . What's been happening with everyone else? |
Had uni today, booked a fitness assessment at a gym for the weekend, eating some dinner as I find it in the fridge.
I have a cucumber and a carrot and I think I'll go look for some meat. You? |

Morrison is like legendary... I wish I hadve seen him :(
Ezza & Sarrah - heh. Sorry man, I shoulda let you know - I didn't know you liked him. Hey zero :). ... didn't I post a reply to you, Matt? Ah well. Sounds good... how's uni going? What kind of things have you been doing there lately? |
Aes820, could you please close the "Travis Parker" thread. I think it's against the rules but I'm not sure, either way it made me annoyed to see a thread like that in here.
Trea, I was back at AIM this week. I am doing similar things to last term, basically it is like this: Aural - continuing on just harder stuff. Theory - continuing on just harder stuff. (Got a high distinction for Semester One :)). Ensembles - in two of those again. Concert Prac - same as last term. Music Tech - Cubase SX3 Music Industry Studies - new subject this semester, learning about Occupational Health & Safety for the music industry, correct ways to lift things, copyright stuff, legal stuff, budgeting things, etc. Really cool subject :). |
I can't, I've only that kind of power in the guitar forum. We need a super or a Jam Session local to do that. :(
|
Oh well, 'sall good.
There is no Jam Session local is there? |
soooo anyone go to Berklee, or take any of the berkleemusic.com online classes?
|
Nah. Berklee is half the world away from me. I go to the Australian Institute Of Music though.

you need supering. |

Nice. It's about 2000 miles from me, but they have and an line extension school, that I'm looking at. I've done online classes before, and I have most of the hardware I'd need to have for the Berklee classes, I was just wondering if anyone had any experience with Berklee or their extension school. If I wasn't married, I'd just simply pack my **** and head back to Boston. I haven't found any decent music schools in my part of Texas, or any that are comprable in focus to Berklee. |
An online course would be awesome, especially when nothing is in close proximity. I think some of the guys in the bass forum went to a Berklee open day.

is the course I'm looking at. I will likely follow that up a year or so after completion with this one: http://www.berkleemusic.com/school/certificates/certificate?area_item_id=1827493&program_id=3948590 |

Aes is super... he just needs to be acknowledged as such ;) Here's my take on Berklee. Berklee is controversial. According a lot of people, it's not worth what you pay for; that people only go there because it has a good reputation. However, I doubt many of the people saying that have actually been there. Personally, I have no idea as I'm also half a world away. The only experience I've had with Berklee (besides listening to artists who have gone there, but that doesn't mean anything much) is reading some of their books. The trombone practise method by Berklee Press seems - so far - good in terms of getting the point across and has provided me with a few new approaches. Although the techniques being taught are (so far anyway) ones I already know, I have still learnt quite a bit from it... I dunno. I'd imagine their online courses are probably going to be a lot like their publications, so maybe you should see if you can have a look at a couple of their books/whatever on the subject; see if those are of use. *shrug* Ahh music school... I would love that. I'm going to the Monash Uni open day tomorrow to check out the music and IT faculties, and in a few weeks I'm going to check out the VCA (Victorian College of the Arts) which is partly a music school. Should be sweet. Well done with that high distinction, Matt! Oh yeah. I met Bill Watrous last night (one of the world's top trombonists), so I was pumped . He's a nice bloke. What's happening with everyone else? |
Well, i've decided that my life will not be complete until i buy a breadboard, a few 555 timers, and some pots, and make myself a synth.
(yes aes, i know i'll need loads resistors and caps and an amp aswell... :( ) I wish maplin sold breadboards that took ICs... /frown I wonder if any other suppliers do? and post them for free? :) |

Are you still quite active in the bass forum? |
I don't post my arse off like I used to do, but I am on MX everyday and I look around in there a lot, but yeah I'm not what I'd term a frequent poster or anything, not the last few weeks.

I learned a few songs that we're going to be playing at this up coming gig. Had a bit of a jam with them, then sat around outside and chatted for most of the arvo. A relaxing Saturday. |
My Saturday; got up pretty early for a Saturday for me, 8 ish. Went to the gym for my fitness assessment before they make up my program.
After that, home for a bit, then seeing some old friends at a baseball field, hanging out, they dropped me home. Then just watching TV, music, guitar, MX, that kind of thing. |
I had an early morning too- i was awake at like, 9, and dressed by half ten.
I went into town and bought white bread, Snack-a-jacks and jafffa cakes, since the rents are away for the weekend at a wedding and we will invariably get hungry. Plus, my sisters friends are coming over and my bro has to work so i have to make sure they don't cause any "mischief". I can't be arsed to go into the city* to get breadbored and stuff but i might have a piss aorund iwth some op-amps on some veroboard i have left over. I'm not just lazy, its a 35 minute bus ride and its expensive (more expensive than ordering online and paying delivery) and so i can't be arsed |
Half ten? I've never been up at half ten. What happens!
|
Half ten? I've never been up at half ten. What happens!
Its weird... Apparently, my parents don't just reappear every afternoon- they actually get up and eat and stuff. weird. And on TV, custard pies are thrown, and CXat Deeley dresses in a manner which i wouldn't consider neccessary in a kid's TV show... |

You should post a bit more in there. Make a few constructive and helpful posts over the next several days. Make your presence known. Doing so might come in handy. |
