I say get Scenes From a Memory or if you wouldnt mind spending the extra money, get Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence. If you liked ToT more, get Six Degree, if you liked IaW more, get Scenes.

bassist-bmxer 04-10-2005 05:43 PM

Yeah I was thinking of getting Scenes From A Memory, but I have the dvd so i dont know if there would be much point in buying it yet. So I might just get Awake, or save up for Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence.

3rdplanet 04-10-2005 06:03 PM

You can't really go wrong with Awake, Scenes or 6 Degrees, all are great, but I would say to get Awake as it is kick ***, and there is a picture of the band with their permed hair on the inside cover.

The JoZ 04-10-2005 06:10 PM

Awake, Awake, Awake.

6 Degrees really is good, but I think Awake has...better variety? I don't know, I can't explain it.

6 Degrees has a few better songs I think...but as a WHOLE, I think Awake is better...

bassist-bmxer 04-10-2005 06:14 PM

Ok I think I will go with Awake then, also seeing as its cheaper too! :p I'll probably get it sometime this week then. Thanks for the reccomendation guys! :thumb:

Lord Abortion 04-11-2005 02:47 AM
a lot of people will say images and words or awake
images and words is a masterpiece

but I haven't got six degrees yet...

jpshortstuff 04-11-2005 05:25 AM

i cant imagine living without six degress
glass prison's got it all - great riffs, inventive lyrics and some of the best DT solos ever
disc two's got the goodnight kiss solo which seems to last forever and just gets better

if you havnt got 6 degrees
then you havnt lived

sickgoregrind 04-11-2005 07:48 AM

^
A bit of an exaggeration, it is definately a progressive fans dream but 6doit just lacks the flair and emotion of previous D.T releases, maybe a bit of a forced compromise, i dont know.

jpshortstuff 04-11-2005 08:06 AM

ok i was exagerating but only a bit
i still think Glass Prisons their best song
and you have to take into account that i like heavier stuff

sickgoregrind 04-11-2005 08:16 AM

^

Ok fair enough if you like heavy music but there are certain things you come to expect from a band like Dream Theater. I really am put off from their last 2 albums because to me Dream Theater mean lush melodic guitar work and symphonic fiddly bits encapsulated in a unique world of infinite ideas. The new albums don't mean that to me but i suppose my memories are different to yours.

I dont want them to recreate 'images' but for them just to not feel the need to evolve for evolvings sake, y'understand?

lil chris 04-11-2005 08:22 AM

Their last two albums were a big disspointment after iaw, awake and scenes from a memory. Although I did enjoy disc 2 of 6 degrees, hope Octavarium will be different.

sickgoregrind 04-11-2005 08:25 AM

What is this Octavarium you speak of? A new studio Dream Theater album?

jpshortstuff 04-11-2005 08:33 AM

havnt you heard

jpshortstuff 04-11-2005 08:35 AM

go to www.dreamtheater.net/news_dreamtheater.php#octavarium

lil chris 04-11-2005 09:01 AM

Does anyone know of other decent prog rock bands of the same style as dream theater? I've heard Angra but that's about it.

M7S 04-11-2005 10:03 AM
Yeah so I have 'Images and Words' and 'Train Of Thought'. Which album should I get next?
screw the Scenes From A Memory cd, get the live dvd you silly :naughty:

:chug:

3rdplanet 04-11-2005 10:59 AM

Try Threshold and Wolverine. Two bands I like which are similar to Dream Theater.

EDIT: Oh, most people will say Symphony X, but they aren't that great.

Triangle 04-11-2005 11:13 AM
I agree with you on that one. The downside to "6 Degrees..." is that it's two discs, and therefore a.) more expensive, b.) unnecessarily lengthy, in my opinion. The second disc seems, to me, to show the widest possible range of DT's style, while being only 42 minutes long.
I picked it up for £9. :)

Its currently tied with Awake for my fav. But these things change every day...

Check out Pain of Salvation for another great prog band.

i found in some garage-sale style cd shop in japan, and i got it for about 8quid, and i got a falling into infinty rarities cd for 7quid. good old japan :)

The JoZ 04-11-2005 04:46 PM

So, we've got Octavarium coming up...and they should be doing the third part to The Glass Prison series of songs.

Anyone else think they will find a way to reuse the 1-0-0-0 breakdown riff? I am thinking they will...and that riff will probably be used in each continuation, methinks...

bassist-bmxer 04-11-2005 04:52 PM

^ i love that riff even though it is just so simple, and the drumbeat to it.

Yeah so I bought 'Awake' today! I'm liking it so far!

RiceMonster 04-11-2005 05:07 PM

Yes, that is a sweet riff.

Good job. My favorites off that are Space Dye Vest and Erotomania.

Treebeard 04-11-2005 06:04 PM

I downloaded most of their new songs off Limewire because I love stealing. They aren't as good as their other stuff.... Blah, I give it 6.5/10

BLAhhhh

BradyEB 04-12-2005 02:51 AM

I doubt its actually the new songs.

was the second this dying soul?

"I can't break out of this prison all alone"
was the second this dying soul?

"I can't break out of this prison all alone"
yeah, there are musical and lyrical similarities between them both

lil chris 04-12-2005 09:31 AM

The new songs won't be out on p2p's yet. They only sent them off to the label about 2 weeks ago.

bassist-bmxer 04-12-2005 09:50 AM

Is it just me or does anyone else find the intro of 'Caught in a web' reminding you of sonic? :p

:p Kinda. hehe.

I really can't wait for the new album. I'll prob download it first then buy it, because it'll come out in the US before the UK. ;)

kurrpt 04-12-2005 09:52 AM
