/couldn't find Morgana Lefay - Red Moon, but in the intrest of keeping this alive, I'll do Morgana Leafy = To Isengard
running time 5:17

Intro starts off with a kinda epic Distorted guitar riff, I like the crunchy tone, and the drums and bass lock down to keep a steady groove.
At about 40 seconds the vocals come in, and they didn't impress me at all.
At 1:05 a slight variation is introduced riffwise which helps to relieve the mononity of the song so far.
This whole sequence is reapeated a good couple of times untill an entirely different riff(:amaze: ) kicks in at about 2:15.
Same tempo. basically same rhythm. Just different notes. slight overdubs to create ambience, and if i wasn't so mind-numbingly bored....they might work.
Break down occurs at 2:42.
Teeny weeny little build up to some morbidly slow and plodding harmonized leads....before kicking back into the start riff. Occasional overdubs by keyboards etc.... I feel this song would really, really benefit from orchestration. but alas that didn't occur to them :upset:
4:20 back into the second main riff...hmmm deja vú?
at 4:46 a cool outro commences. unfortunately you need to sit through 4:46 of tedious song to get to it.
All in all, This piece could have been much better if it at least had a bit more diversification tempo and riff wise. The vocals grated on my nerves, but they might be for some people. So we end with a 4/10. I dunno what the rest of their stuff is like, but I'm not inclined to check it out

Songs
Stratovarious - Stratosphere (instrumental power metal)
The Wildhearts - So into you (Geordie punk/rock)
Pantera - Hard Ride (from their power metal/glam rock days)
Grand Magus - Summer Solstice (blues influenced rock - think along the lines of Down)
Skunk Anansie - weak(Rock)

Get me on AIM if you can't find any of the songs - munkymagik2001

Dibs on the strato, am I allowed to wait a couple of hours to do it though? I can't go on slsk right at this moment. If that's not allowed someone else can do one of the songs and I'll take their suggestion.

munky_magik 12-14-2004 08:35 AM

ehh...You're supposed to have up to 2 hours to get it, but if no one else is wanting it then take your time :)

LordDargon 12-14-2004 10:45 AM

I looked the band up on Metal-Archives, and it listed them as "melodic power metal". I thought to myself, "What other kind is there?"

Anyways, the song starts off with great, melodic shredding. It is soon backed up by solid power metal drumming. The shredding continues on the same basic shred line, but with tons of great little variations, for about 1:20, then it stops and goes into some really slow breakdown part. This is boring, by 2:00 a slow lead has picked up. It's alright for a power metal fan I guess, but I don't like it. Luckily, at 3:30 the great shredding comes back. At 4:20 or so it stops, like it did in the breakdown before, but this time is just keeps winding down and the song is over.

5/10 Nothing that particularly makes me want to listen to the whole thing over again.

Kataklysm - For All Our Sins (Death Metal, semi-melodic, with hyperblasts)
Lykathea Aflame - Sadness and Strength (Progressive, Experimental Death Metal)
Vader - The Sea Came In At Last (Epic Death/Thrash)

sorry about the spelling

Kataklysm-For All Our Sins

This song starts off with a very fast riff over a blast beat. At about 0.17, the vocals come in over the same guitar riff and the drums switch to a basic rock beat. The vocals are your basic death metal vocals that are a little higher pitch then norma. At the pre-chorus, the guitar changes to a really cool harmonized riff, the drums go into siezures of insanely fast blast beats, and a second lower range vocal style appears. At the chorus there is another similar harmonized riff. And when the line "for all our sins" is spoken, the riff changes again to something similar to the verse riff. In the second half of the chorus, the riff changes again to a classic swedish riff. At 4.05 the bridge kicks in. The bridge consists of a simple, hardcore, chord progression and plenty of double bass drumming. Also, the vocals are slightly lower in pitch. At 5.05 the guitar switches to a slow swedish style riff which goes on for about a minute untill the end of the song while the lyrics basically cry out for forgiveness in tortured screams.

Overall, this song song doesn't reinvent the wheel, but a fine sounding, flawlessly executed wheel it is.

8/10

Arsis-Face of My Innocence (It can be found on their website.)(Melodic Death Metal)
Converge-Eagles Become Vultures (these guys are some of the best, most chaotic punk metal. Theyve been around for about ten years and deserve a hell of a lot of recognition.)

munky_magik 12-14-2004 01:06 PM
the drums go into siezures of insanely fast blast beats
That's be the hyperblasts :)

By "swedish riffs" I think he meant the melodic riffs used in the song... there are only a few, that's why I called it "semi-melodic"

at.the.carcass.of.god 12-14-2004 01:43 PM

ya thats what i meant.
and to LordDargon, do u have the album, cuz that was some really kcik *** stuff

LordDargon 12-14-2004 01:51 PM

Yes, it is excellent. If you want to hear alot of hyperblasts, also grab the song "Blood on the Swans" which has tons. Or get the whole album.

at.the.carcass.of.god 12-14-2004 01:57 PM

munky_magik 12-14-2004 02:17 PM

Arsis - The Face of My Innocence - A Celebration of Guilt
Melodic Death with Black/Thrash/Progressive influences
Running time 5:30 approx

Intro: High tempo Blastbeat(I'm guessing) and launches into a brutal assualt on the ears. Guitar riff is very technical and the drums are pretty insane. I like it :D
About 18 secs in we settle down into the verse and the vocals join in, they seem pretty much your typical Death metal vocals. The intro riff is developed on for the verse on the technicality of the musicians is really impressive. Strangely enough, I can even tolerate the vocals.
35 secs in and already we have a new secion. The section keeps up the intensity and is just some heavy motherfucking riffage. This is good shi!
About 50 secs in the heavy *** riffage is continued in an instrumental form, and I do belive I hear Squeals :D
1:08 and the vocals join back in and we revisit the verse riff before shortly switching to the chorus(I assume) riff which is nice and melodic and creates a nice sense of juxtaposition. After this we head back into old territory for a bit before switching to yet another section at 2:27. This is a kinda epic half time riff and adds a great feel of continuation and pace to the song.
2:58 and a guitar solo has sauntered across my speakers the playing seems good from what I can tell, unfortunately that isn't very much as the solo is buried in the mix. Shortly we are joined by the vocals before switching to yet another section, this is a much lighter riff when compared to teh rest of the song, but it's still cool. At 3:30 the vocals build on top of the riff and the drums sound massive here. We kick back into what I deemed the verse riff before changing into a new riff, Again!. one guitar is playing alead melody, the other palm muted arpegios and both are goingat a half time feel whilst the drums carry on regardless. This all breaks down into a variation of the previous riff, but still carrying the arpegio feel.
At 5:05 we have anotehr guitar solo, Playing is mediocre but it's placed slightly better in the mix. And from there we fade out

I was impressed, Tempo changes, Great technicality, Great,Heavy, Massive riffage, Even the vocals were alright. Solos and squeals and the drummer seems to be a fan of power metal double bass \m/. The only problem I had with this song as the recording quality and the Mix in whichthe drums were slightly too promenant. Even with those faults it gets a 9/10 and I'm already downloading more of their stuff

suggestions

Dream Evil - H.M.J (power metal at it's cheesiest)
Buckethead - The Treeman (instrumental crazy technical guitar)
Kalmah - Hereos to us(power metal w/ death influences, alá cob)
Mercyful fate - Melissa(traditional metal)
Porcupine Tree - Intermediate Jesus(instrumental jazz)

Again if you need anything Just get me on AIM, And sorry this took so long

LordDargon 12-14-2004 02:47 PM

That song rocks, if you like Arsis check out Necrophagist, that guy crams TONS of guitar squeals into his ultratechnical riffs. (you seemed to like the squeals so...)

munky_magik 12-14-2004 02:49 PM

I'll give Necrophagist a shot, and who knows...I might even get the hang of this whole Death-Metal shebang :p

EDIT: this idea just occured to me, if you're recomending a rare song and don't have any IM progams or whatever, uplaod it to http://s21.yousendit.com/ so that others can get it easily

LordDargon 12-14-2004 03:21 PM

See if you can find Spawn of Possession as well, they're very tech with crazy solos and squeals, particularly in the song I'm listening to now, Church of Deviance. They might be too brutal for you though.

munky_magik 12-14-2004 03:27 PM

I'll give it a shot. I think i'll be more apt to liking this stuff the more of it I listen to

at.the.carcass.of.god 12-14-2004 04:38 PM

id call spawn of possesion grindcore almost. But if your into that stuff check out the red chord.
id call spawn of possesion grindcore almost. But if your into that stuff check out the red chord.
Not at all. Spawn of Possession are far too structured, intricate and complex to be grind. They don't sound anything like The Red Chord.

Well, The Red Chord aren't exactly the definition of grind. They're some extreme metal mixed with some Hardcore stuff. You can find a couple of Spawn songs at their site, which I'm not sure the URL of, so do a google search.

Dancin' Man 12-14-2004 05:16 PM

In any case, The Red Chord is a good band. Necrophagist is better. I have yet to head any Spawn of whatever songs.

Mercyful Fate - Melissa

Slow melodic fingerpicked guitar arpeggio opens things, a distorted guitar screams fairly quickly in and starts playing some lead. That stops and just the guitar is there, vocals start, a male tenor, not the best voice.

Slow drums then start and then some really high power metal vocals, they sounded pretty bad, I don't know whether that was the same guy or a woman... either way they were bad. The guitarwork reminds me of Simon & Garfunkel. The singing stops and some "oooh's" float around the background.

At 2:10, it gets heavy, but not fast at all, old school heavy metal. The high voice gives a cry of "Melissa!" and something else. This goes on just a few bars.

Then we have a new section, it has finger picked guitar again but feels faster, and drums are along with it. The normal vocals are back, and theres some lead guitar work. Quickly goes back to the "Melissa!" bit. After that it gets even faster and heavier, theres more high vocals for a bit.

It then descends back into a guitar solo over a slow riff and drum beat, which goes on for a while. Then back to the faster finger picked bit, the lead guitar starts to solo again, and calls of "Melissa!" fill the air again.

At 6:00, it slows back down again to just fingerpicked guitar and the tenor vocals, I also just realized that Melissa is someone who died from the last line about her being taken away. It end's on a chord, and theres a whisper of "I think Melissa is still with us"

Well, theres some older prog heavy metal, I think the flow could have been better, changes seemed too abrupt and random. I wasn't too keen on the vocals either, especially the high ones. The fingerpicked guitar was probably the best bit to me, it sounded really good.

Overall, it was alright. 6.8/10
