Granted, I didn't give it much of a chance, but I didn't dig At War with the Mystics. But I'm one of those chaps who only like Yoshimi, so maybe my opinion doesn't count as much. Whatever.

I'm currently listening to Tom Waits' Rain Dogs for the second time ever. I'm diggin' more this time, I guess I wasn't in the right musical mood when I played it before. Anyone have suggestions for the next album of his I should look into?

AWWTM is a grower.

Seriously, you can't go wrong with the guy. Besides Rain Dogs, his most popular albums seem to be Swordfishtrombones and Bone Machine, so try one of those out. If you want to hear stuff from his early career pre-swordfish, check out Closing Time, The Heart Of A Saturday Night, or Blue Valentine. I love him.

pixiesfanyo 04-13-2006 10:10 PM

I don't think it's possible to not like Tom Waits.
I don't think it's possible to not like Tom Waits.
My friend doesn't. He calls him the cookie monster and makes fun of me for liking him.

Then again, he also dislikes Johnny Cash. When he first heard his cover of "One" he thought it was joke. So fuck that guy.

br3ad_man 04-13-2006 10:30 PM

I checked out Tsar today. For some reason I like them, even though I think I probably shouldn't.

JonM 04-13-2006 10:40 PM

I am digging the hell out of the new Calexico record. I can't believe it's Calexico, but my first impression is that it is going to become my favorite Calexico record of all.

I had to get over "Cruel" (I didn't like it at first, it's grown on me a little bit), but everything else is pretty cool.

Daniel! 04-13-2006 10:49 PM

The second disc of the Nuggets box set
Back From the Grave Vol. 1
The Essential Pebbles Collection Vol. 1

Some great 60's garage rock compilations.
My friend doesn't. He calls him the cookie monster and makes fun of me for liking him.
My brother does that to me all the time.

YDload 04-14-2006 12:54 AM

That makes me wonder: how come TMV doesnt have hooks when all their songs have choruses? Whatta bunch of weirdos PS did you like any of those songs I sent ya?

Zmev 04-14-2006 02:38 AM

Thrice - Artist in Ambulance
A Certain Ratio - Looking for a certain ratio
Calexico - A Feast of Wire

Happymeal 04-14-2006 06:57 AM

Bomb the Music Industry! still And Swervedriver's Mezcal Head. This stuff rocks.

br3ad_man 04-14-2006 07:22 AM

I've listened to Fabulous Muscles 5 times today. I listened to Saetia's A Retrospective twice as well.

I Was A Kaleidoscope 04-14-2006 07:43 AM

^ I was listening to Knife Play a lot the last couple of weeks.

But at the moment:

The Knife - Silent Shout
M83 - Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts (been wanting to hear an M83 album in full for ages, finally am now, and it's good.)

JonM 04-14-2006 10:53 AM

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah.

Straight up indie rock has always been a style that appeals to my mind but not as much to my body. I appreciate it as fully as I do hip hop, reggae, or anything else, but it doesn't move me as much. So I tend to rate indie rock albums, even ones I really enjoy, 4 stars, while records in more visceral styles get 5s. This record is close to a 5. The creative elements that make this stand out above otherwise comparable indie rock records are very visceral and instinctual, and I think that's what indie rock today chronically lacks.

The Great Decay 04-14-2006 10:57 AM

I've actually been holding off on checking them out, reading that has pursuaded me to do so.

Ornery Cephalopod 04-14-2006 12:00 PM

Tru dat on the new Calexico. I like the Black Light/Hot Rail style a lot more than their other stuff, but the new one is still quite a nice dig.

Right now I'm diggin' on The Decemberists - The Tain EP.

Halfway through, and I already like it more than any one album overall, except for a few random songs here and there.

mister_d 04-14-2006 12:40 PM

Little Man Tate...great indie band with unreal live performance, if your in a band and you want to see how it should be done check them out.
So glad hey been signed now, they will have some money behind them and the chance to fulfill there potential!!

Daniel! 04-14-2006 03:06 PM

The Mummies - Death By Unga Bunga

Pretty fun stuff.

el doctor 04-14-2006 03:24 PM
I've actually been holding off on checking them out, reading that has pursuaded me to do so.
The hype surrounding them was pretty sickening, but they're worth a try. "Let the Cool Goddess Rust Away" is damn good song and it's a fun album for the most part. However, I don't think the album deserved anywhere near all the praise it got.

pixiesfanyo 04-14-2006 03:29 PM

Tapes 'n Tapes - The Loon

This is pretty good, kind of like an early Pavement lost demo, with better playing and worst singing.

Ficus 04-14-2006 04:23 PM
Tapes 'n Tapes - The Loon

This is on my 'to get' list.

REM - Murmur
Tom Waits - Raindogs

br3ad_man 04-14-2006 05:26 PM
Converge - Jane Doe

Metal was pretty much ruined for me after I heard this album, because I haven't found anything even close to the intensity.
I'm pretty much the same.

I'm listening to Diary.

Bukowski 04-14-2006 05:32 PM

Minutemen - Paranoid Time
Minutemen - What Makes a Man Start Fires
Minutemen bootlegs

The Great Decay 04-14-2006 06:20 PM

Today's listenage:

Pavement - Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain
Pavement - Slanted & Enchanted
Cursive - Domestica
Converge - Jane Doe
Converge - You Fail Me

Bukowski 04-14-2006 07:27 PM

Yo La Tengo - I Can Hear The Heart Beating As One

This is great. There's a couple of patchy songs, but mostly its good. Autumn Sweater is sweet as.

YDload 04-14-2006 08:05 PM

The new Dog Fashion Disco album Adultery looks to be pretty good. Pretty much what you would expect from the band, plus a little bit of surprises (which themselves are expected).

Ornery Cephalopod 04-14-2006 08:21 PM

Got the new Peeping Tom today.

Kinda disappointing, but there's some great stuff on there.

The Great Decay 04-14-2006 09:16 PM

Sage Francis – A Healthy Distrust
The Velvet Underground – The Velvet Underground & Nico

Glitterati 04-14-2006 09:38 PM

My Bloody Valentine - Isn't Anything

I can see My Bloody Valentine becoming one of my favorite bands, what with my love of noise rock.

That and some Matisyahu.

br3ad_man 04-14-2006 09:41 PM

MBV are so good.

I just bought the new Grates and Abbey Road.

I Was A Kaleidoscope 04-14-2006 09:48 PM

At The Drive-In - Relationship Of Command

Why is it that I only just found out Iggy Pop did the backing vocals on Rolodex Propaganda?

The Great Decay 04-14-2006 09:52 PM

I wasn't aware of that either, until now.

A lot of people tend to stick to Loveless, but I think some of their EPs are almost equally as stunning, especially if you're into more of that noise rock edge.

Zebra 04-14-2006 10:09 PM

Ween - The Mollusk

Tangy zizzle 04-14-2006 11:29 PM

br3ad, The Grates play soulless music. You must realise this?

br3ad_man 04-15-2006 12:51 AM

Tangy, The Grates play fun music. You musn't realise this.

indy_undy 04-15-2006 02:03 AM

You're both right (what's the album like?).

I've been digging Calvin Johnson's What Was Me. Nothing to Hold us Here is so gangster to the core.

The Great Decay 04-15-2006 10:00 AM

I'm listening to Ok Computer for the first time in a long while.

Glitterati 04-15-2006 10:00 AM

I'm rediscovering the awesomeness of The Doors lately, so that's what will be my fix today.

ATM 04-15-2006 10:09 AM

Still Deftones - White Pony, and I saw my sisters boyfriend play with La Otracina last night and they OWNED
