I spend a lot of time thinking about creating stuff that's dark without actually being heavy, like some Bauhaus or Cat Power

i like kind of tribal drum patterns

It's hard to do but it can be done. Murder By Death comes to mind.

I think something like Bauhaus or Alice in Chains is infinitely more dark and grim than any sort of metal

I really like the Alice In Chains unplugged album. It's still so heavy somehow.
