i would like bleak (some parts of it were excellent) but it was ruined by those lame whiney vocals...whoever the hell sings them (it sure doesnt sound like mikael, at least i hope not).
I would like this edited into the first post of the thread. DO YOU HEAR ME DETH?!!?

Those crap vocals are PTs frontman, Steven Wilson.

Crap? Not at all. Although I'll agree SW's vocals work for PT but not Opeth.
Those outstanding vocals are from PTs amazing frontman, Steven Wilson. Also, I love Godhead's Lament
You and I agree on so much, it's amazing. :D

WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?

Please define whiney.

NP: Opeth - Still Day Beneath The Sun

Deth 01-30-2006 07:49 PM

Damn right, those vocals are incredible. The synergy between the two is perfect during that part.

Toaster 01-30-2006 07:50 PM
leper affinity and bwp are alright but i didnt recall particularly enjoying them

I agree that Wilson's vocals are whiny and annoying, but they don't even come close to ruining the song.

'Tis the truf son.

EDIT: What the Hell are you guys talking about, what is your definition of 'whiney'

Kaiwaz 01-30-2006 08:02 PM
I agree that Wilson's vocals are whiny and annoying, but they don't even come close to ruining the song.
This is true.

Moses 01-30-2006 08:22 PM

I'm not sure I ever like Wilson's vocals that much. They don't stand out to me. It's not like they could ever ruin a song but I don't think they'll ever be the one thing I listen for in PT. Of course he does do wonderful vocal orchestration which I do admire, however his voice isn't active enough for me.

Kage 01-30-2006 08:24 PM

You guys have got to be kidding. The section where Wilson comes in is absolutely the best part of the song and when they're both harmonizing it's some of the best melodic sections Opeth have ever done.

Harvest as well has some great harmonization between Akerfeldt and Wilson.

Toaster 01-30-2006 08:35 PM

I never said the harmonizing sounded bad. Alone however, he just sounds too plain and droning. It's hard to explain.. to me it almost sounds like Wilson is just reciting the lyrics (as opposed to putting some feeling behind them).

Kage 01-30-2006 08:36 PM

I get the complete opposite feeling. Wilson's part really charges the song with the energy it needs. That part is captivating for me. Then again, I'm a PT fanboy.

Even so, they're still beautiful but I know what you're talking about. Get on MSN, I've got something for ya :smoke:

Moses 01-30-2006 08:41 PM

When my computer crashed all my music files got lost. I'm back to 10 gigs of music but the only Opeth I have is Ghost Reveries, so I can't go back and review that section of Steven Wilsons vocals... It sucks.

Kage 01-30-2006 08:42 PM

I'd send BWP to you, but it seems that I remember that your AIM sucks at sending/receiving files.

Darkness 01-30-2006 08:45 PM

Ugh.. the fact is those vocals are whiny, and plain. They're out of place after Mikeals awesome growls and before his awesome clean voice.

Come on dudes, full-album filesharing is for the weak.

Weak or disadvantaged?

When you lend your whole album collection to a freind, he loses it, then your computer's harddrive crashes, is that weak?

That's different, clearly.

On the other hand, every Rush album I owned I lost while on a vacation and I still haven't amassed the previous level. I refuse to do file-sharing on an album basis...for bands I REALLY REALLY like I tend to not want to and won't support it. It just depends on your point of view. I think that it's perfectly fine if you've already spent the money and are simply replacing that which is lost.

Didnt this happen three times now? Dude, back up your stuff.

Yeah man... I'm tired of sending you stuff. :p

The vocals in Bleak are good. I don't think they sound out of place at all, nor are they particulary whiney. There's thousands of singers with more whiney voices than Steven Wilson. I like some PT, but I agree his voice can come across as bland; just, not on that song at all.

On another note; the harmonies on BWP (album) are great, mostly down to Steve, i'm sure. Like on The Drapery Falls "Lapse into the ways of misery", etc.

The harmonies on that album are incredible. Thank God SW produced it!

Agreed, though I really dislike his vocal production on D/D.

TojesDolan 01-31-2006 12:06 PM

Ah yes, the mastery of Mr. Wilson. The Lamentations DVD is quite educational on his work, and I suppose it was very similar to BWP.

Anyhow, Bleak is a tough song to sing because it's a medium term pitch voice, I mean, the clean vocals, you know, so I have to force my voice big time on that.

Overall, it's a fun, easy song to play.
