Little Man being Erased 07-19-2005 06:16 PM
I wouldn't have thought he'd have been able to consciously choose afterwards, what with being reduced to "less than spirit, less than the meanest ghost" after trying to kill Harry.
That's exactly what I was thinking. I just don't see it happening.
I wouldn't have thought he'd have been able to consciously choose afterwards, what with being reduced to "less than spirit, less than the meanest ghost" after trying to kill Harry.

I suppose she could try and say that the effect of him surviving the attack could have bent the general Horcrux rule..but then I'd say she was stretching it a bit.
Hey Bartender do you like my user title now? :) :)

That could always be a further significance to 'the magical properties of the number 7', which, as far as I remember, has no other significance to any of the Harry Potter storylines. She did make a pretty big point of letting the reader know that, which she wouldn't do if it wasn't important. She may also use that to explain why Harry didn't die.

It would certainly explain Harry's psychological link to Voldemort, anyway, which hasn't been explained yet.

Bartender 07-19-2005 07:10 PM

I think I'd prefer if that remained unexplained, though. There's never been a survivor of the curse before, so why should it be?

I think that was one thing I didn't like about the new book, actually. Now that Horcruxes have been introduced, it feels like everything's getting explained too much, if you see what I mean. I preferred it when all we had to go on was that he "was reduced to less than spirit, less than the meanest ghost", and there was something of a bit of mystery around it all. I imagine what she's doing is part of the conscious effort to make the storylines "grow up" along with the children that are reading them, but I think that in trying to make it more grown up, she's made the classic child's mistake (the flaw I know my, for one, writing as a child always suffered from) in leaving nothing to the reader's imagination.

I just hope she doesn't take it too far in the next book.

I'll be quiet now.

Well, "like" is such a strong word. More than I did the last one, to be sure.

Okay, well I forgot how much people in England like Harry Potter. In America it's just for little kids and it seems creepy for older people to like it.

No, you're exactly right. It's how I felt too.

Seriously? It almost seems to be more of an adult thing here. At least amongst the people I know, anyway.

Well that aside (can't be bothered going into some kind of cross-cultural analysis), giving away important plot points in any book is just a really crappy thing to do.

I'm not planning on banning you any more, though. And my previous reply seemed a bit harsh; I was just being flippant. I don't mind it at all.

Iai 07-19-2005 07:21 PM

I was gonna make a thread in the other forum called 'Harry Potter Dies In The Next Harry Potter Book', then I realised it wasn't funny and Eccles would shout at me. :(

I read the spoiler on Something Awful (they renamed one of their forums to the spoiler just for a few days) and checked my little brother's copy of the book to see if it was true.

:(

Iai 07-19-2005 08:43 PM

Heheh.

I saw their thread that had Hermione Dies in the title. That got me a little confused after reading the real spoiler so many times.

I'm from Canada. And man, that is creepy. It's a childrens book... I read the first one when I was in the 7th grade. By the time I hit 8th I had grown out of Harry Potter.

Same here. It's creepy seeing the little eight-year-olds in their wizard hats and glasses...and the comic-book-guy-esque characters doing the same.

Luxor 07-19-2005 11:58 PM

Dressing up and camping out for Star Wars... Halo 2 release date biggest sick day in history...

Some people really need to grow up.

And that thing about Halo is ridiculous.

See my pitchfork thread :p

What a brilliant 10000th post

My brother bought Harry Potter yesterday, which sucks because I have to wait until he's finished. It sucks knowing what happens without knowing what actually happens, if you get what I mean.

I had a drama excursion today and it was an excellent play that we saw...called "The Memory of Water". Except for the middle aged women stripping down to their underwear. Other than that it was excellent.

Zmev 07-20-2005 02:05 AM

I got through to the 'next stage of the recruitment process' for my job. Basically I had the interview and now they're looking for vacancies/placements for me to be based.

Just when I ask this girl to go to a gig with me (She 'used' to like me - kinda long story I won't go into it) she tells me she's moving.

Now I already know this but she's moving in late August and all the gigs that we were looking at are in like October/November time. She's moving about 100 miles away at least so it's not exactly gonna be easy to see her either. :upset:

This has been a rather up-and-down day for me so far.

Theleftside2 07-20-2005 06:29 AM

I haven't been getting enough sleep these last 4 days....

Yesterday I was literally about to pass out on my keyboard.
I've had chances to get online more now.../realizing how much people have left this place. Although people like Bartender, br3adman, OrbDragon, Zmev, YdLoad, IHaveRickets, JimmyBowels, and others still get on.

Yeah I'm not too good on the whole women thing :upset:

Last time I asked her out, she was all for it but her parents (being strict Christians, don't know whether that actually had anything to do with it, just something I noted) were against the whole dating thing. Not just with me, with every boy she's wanted to date.

Girls suck

I thought the horcruxes were somewhat lame. I also was disappointed that the Half Blood Prince ordeal seemed overshadowed by everything surrounding the Horcruxes and could have been left out; but I'm guessing it might tie in with the next book. I also think that the faux Horcrux that Dumbledore found will be important, or else he wouldnt have got it; you can't trick the man.

Iai 07-20-2005 12:01 PM

Yeah, it seemed pretty strange that the book was named after such a minor sub-plot.

Fresh Prince > Half Blood Prince.

As of today, I'm planning to run away this Autumn. I have a lot more planning to do, though. Especially since I'm going to have to save up a decent amount of money.

Run away?

I used to run away all the time when I was a kid.

And by run away, I mean walk to the nearest park and sit on a bench watching little kids play for half an hour.

masada 07-20-2005 01:33 PM

I plan on being gone as long as I can.

Happymeal 07-20-2005 01:43 PM

The moment I saw YDload's user title I knew I won't be back here until I finished the book.

It was truly amazing, wasn't it.

Zmev 07-20-2005 11:37 PM

So guess who might be getting a job at the teddy bear factory?

I hope it's me!

Luxor 07-20-2005 11:42 PM

You could steal a box of teddy's. Then you'll never have to buy a present for a girl ever again! ...

..

Except until you run out of teddy bears... I guess.

Luxor 07-20-2005 11:46 PM

And Zappa.. lovin' the user title.

Zappa 07-20-2005 11:48 PM
